Ok I may be out of bounds on this one (wouldnt be the first time and wont be the last) but, why is that the same people who are the first ones to whine and cry about broken 1v1s and lame blob tactics...are the same ones who have commented on this, and other threads stating pirates do not have and should not have honor. Can't very well have it both ways if you're gonna be a pirate and by definition ( your definition) not have honor, then you cannot complain when someone treats you the same way. In fact your opponents would be stupid if they did behave honorably towards you when, as evidenced by your statements here, you have no intention of acting with any honor towards them. I fail to see any difference in a broken 1v1 and a broken agreement to ransom. However I am not a pirate (don't have the rl diposition to be one) and therefore dont look at the EVE world through YARRR colored glasses.

ok before you even answer my question i have to say why do ppl say that pirates are not supposed to have honour? if you do ur research and look into the history of pirates you'll find that the great one's had a pirate code which most abided by and actually did have honour. stealing, murdering etc has nothing to do with honour. maybe some ppl don't fully understand the meaning of the word honour.

Im talking about why do people talk about pirates been honourable? nobody that kills and mames for profit is honourable, and yah theres no point in ransoming, if your not making enough money from the kills your doing it in the wrong area, or targeting the wrong people

ok when u blow up a pc rapier like i did yesterday which drops about 5 mil in loot only to fins that 250mil in cloak, faction web and disruptor blew up, it makes u want to ransom. no skill there it's just luck, ransoming for 100mil would have made very good sense if i could have.
and pirates do have honour most of the time, by definition pirate implies nothing about how honourably the person is. only that they operate on the other side of the law

Youve been watching too many films there were never any pirate code of honour, they used to fight each other as well as other nations and the word 'parley' that your thinking of from the pirate code 'blah' from potc actually means 'to talk' and is a word used down history as discussion during a tempoary halt to hostilities. so apart from the people on your boat there wernt ever any friendlyness there.
And i know the meaning of honour and do not find anything that a pirate would come under

and if iw as to ransom someone it would be on age the older they are most probs is they will have inplnts probs +3's so i will ransom tehre pod for about 50-70m
if they are not so old and i do not think they have inplants i will ransom there ship insted :)
now that is why pirates ransom people ;)
why would i want to kill the pod if it has crapy loot but decent age on him? i would rather like isk that a hate mail to be honest But that pittance nowadays, if ya selecting targets and probing them out then you are looking at making 200m at the very lowest and if ya ganking haulers in highsec just the same. you gank a tech 2 fitted battleship ecspecially ravens which are the BS of choice for ratting and missions(think ave killed more ravens than all other battleships put together) and just dropping a few tech 2 siege and an invul and youll make more than that.
Why not just pod and be even more satisfied when ya get the hatemail
oops i didnt even wright my comment :D ment to say i would rather want to earn isk by ransoming a ship or a pod
if i dont and the cargo that drops is crappy loot and i blow the pod up well then i made no isk i would say 7/10 i try ransoming ;) http://img286.imageshack.us/img286/7748/jackoeve3gs.jpg

rofl that's funny. yeah i have seen too many of those films but there are still stories (not films) going back to the old sea-faring days that talk of pirate honour and i see i very weak definition of the word wherever i look meaning it is really best guess what this word means. but honour has nothing to do with the law and therefore breaking of the law and i see no relation between someone who steals and kills and honour?

Actualy, having researched piratical history, yes they did have a code. Most pirate ships had rules of engagement and punishment for not keeping your word or rebeling against your fellow pirates. Also they had a code of what was owed in case of maiming of a crewmate or death. Pirate flages were often used as discriptors of what would hapen to you if you did not surender your cargo. The most famouse of which was the skull with 2 swords under it which ment if you did not surender your cargo they would give no quarter. There were also flags which depicted ship scuddling and stranding of crew if you did not surender. Also most priates would not destroy someone who had nothing to give. They would just raid some suplies and leave. Mind you I'm talking about carabien piratical history. If you go back further most european pirates where pirvaters whith aliegences to a crown which also had a code of conduct. So yes pirates had codes of honor.

A care bear would have to be dumber than a bag of hammers to trust anyone in this game. There's too much profit motive to expect law breakers to play honorably. As a care bear, I never accept a ransom offer because most PVPers can't be trusted to keep their word. I take it on the chin, move on, and I never post a bounty.
And you know what? I prefer it this way. Kind of like a one-night stand.

Actually I prefer to ransom cause u make more out of ransoms. The fact is very few are willing to pay and plus u cannot ransom people while under fire from sentry guns unless u have a very large gang. The majority of noobs you catch even in belts are unwilling to pay tansoms for either ship or pod and simply say **** you anyway In any case I have obtained the highest ever ransom in EVE history yet another game record to go with my many others on GM.
With the pathetic implementation of game mechanics we have atm it seems all pirates would be better off going -2 and exploiting in high sec anyway. No expensive ship ever enters low sec without a rack full of stabs now.

It's not quite about honor in the heroic sense. It's about if a pirate doesn't honor his ransom once, he won't honor the next time he ransoms me, and word spreads. Therefore if you dont' honor your ransoms no one will ever pay them. And if he's not trustworthy his entire corp must be un-trustworthy "many CEOs will enforce this polocy for this very reason". MOST "not all" pirates will honor thier ransoms for this very reason.

Sometimes you want straight cash. Sometimes you dont want your SS to go low. Sometimes you feel sorry for some poor miner flying his best ship. ( less probable reason :D )

It's just a game, as you said in your post. People have different ways of playing it.
I think the answer is:
a) Ransoming is a nice thing for pirates to do, it's kinda like a favour. Oh, ok, they can make isk on pods and some ships which they can't make otherwise, but it's risky and time-consuming too. I think it's like saying, hey dude, it's just a game, we're ebil pirates and we've got you, so here's a chance to get your ass out of the fire by making a quick and reasonable offer.
b) Like I said above, it can be a way to get some extra iskies.
c) It's easier to hate people who kill without a word, or horror of horrors who just smacktalk. Ransoming means there's an lesser (though always small) chance of actually getting some competent pvpers hunting you longterm.
d) It's professional and shows that it's just a business and that pirates can be reasonable people, unless you **** them off of course. Paves the way to getting free isk for not shooting people when you're doing something else anyway, and stuff like that.
e) It's just cool.

What a stupid thing to say. You say you never pay a ransom but you some how think you know the 'most' pvp'ers don't honour them. You have no idea. i would say approximately 1% of pvp'ers who ransom don't honour them. The reason ppl think this is common is because you get 1 or 2 posts on here per week saying who didn't honour one. you don't hear about the thousands of ransoms that are honoured because it's boring to hear about it so no1 posts it on here.

Originally by: Cyan Gadarin i like to ransom in local, and there's 2 great reasons to ransom
1. you can often ransom the same person multiple times
2. you can ransom them to sing songs, praise you in local, it's not always about the isk, sometimes you just wanna have fun

Its not about honour and dishonour. ItÆs all about smart pirates vs less so. (With a small potion of greifers) A smart pirate is someone who is trying to make as much profit from a target as possible.
A smart pirate Ransom a pilot and his ship if the pirate thinks he will get out more isk in the long run by doing so. If you blow someoneÆs ship he will have less isk to pay a ransom next time. If the pirate thinks he will get more isk from modules ect then he ever will get from ransom, he blows up the ship and start ransoming the pod. If the pilot wonÆt pay for his pod the pirate will have to kill him even if it might seem like bad business. If you kill the pod the pilot will have less isk for modules and ransoms in the future. But if you let the pod go anyway people will stop paying.
A stupid pirate He blows up the ship and after that he ransoms the pod but kill the pod anyway. Next time he wonÆt get a single isk from a pod so in the end he gets less isk.
Smart pirates knows all of this and hates when stupid pirates gives pirates a bad name since in doing so they get less isk too even if the effect are not as bad for them as it is for the stupid one.
