o7 all,
That's my first month in Eve flown by and am loving every moment of it so far!
I was wondering if you folks might help feed my curiosity, I'm definitely going down the PvP path and would really appreciate some incite.
I was hoping you might link your favorite PvP ship and setup,
I'm not looking for the "Best" or "Biggest Hitting" but more your personal favorite that you use when you want some fun.
If you could also show any info that might be helpful (HP? DPS? Did you start by stacking Resistance or what role were you thinking about when you made it?) that would be be great!
Many, Many thanks for anyone who takes the time to post, I'd be great to see where peoples heads are at with regards to PvP. |

Works best against scram kiting frigates (frigs with AB/Web/Scram). Works bad against anything with an MWD, though.
Approach, dual web, blap. Easy!
No point/scram, but if you apply damage well (i.e. get close fast, but then try not to move too much to improve tracking) most things melt very quickly!
Bonus points if you manage your repper dangerously, to keep them interested and not thinking about gtfo until it's too late.
Enjoy!

Assuming the target is paying close attention, yes. Thing is though, almost every PVP fit has a scram/disruptor (with good reason), so people kind of assume they're pointed once engaged, hell I've been 'honor pointed' before and only noticed at the last second. It's a gamble, but can be an effective one, especially in FW frigate pew pew, fights don't last long, it's easy to miss things when you've got 'the shakes'.

I'm curious I often see people recommend new players take some T1 frigates out to go fight to learn PvP but can you ever hope to actually kill something with those? Or is it just about seeing what you can accomplish before being blown up (which happens in a couple seconds in a T1 frigate)? |

It depends on the specific situation. If I'm bored I like to sit around in a buffer armor autocannon gnosis. If I need Guo fly though 15 jumps of lowsec to kill some mission running war target armor stratios.
Back in the day though I flew an autocannon punisher like an absolute boss. |

People recommend t1 frigs because they are cheap. Frigs in FW space are NOT cheap though since everyone is bleeding ISK and LP out of their eyes. You'll still see pure t1 fits roaming solo but most people in FW use t2/meta4 eve in their merlins. Also a horde of derptrons will murder any subcap. The moment you see 2/3 atrons on dscan prepare to bugger off because their buddies will be in the next system.

Solo, you can kill other T1 frigates, even as a new player if you put some effort into it. You will learn a lot, fast, if you're willing to.
Lots of people fly T1 frigs solo in lowsec, especially FW lowsec. Thankfully they're not all linked/drugged vets with implants.
In a small T1 frigate gang gang (5-10) you can kill just about any subcap. A T1 cruiser will usually be easier to kill than a command ship, obviously. Depends on the situation. You will learn a lot as well, especially if your fleetmates help you out a bit.
Tagging along in a heavy hitting PVP fleet you can naturally get on any kill :), though you won't be contributing much. You'll still learn some basics.
The reason we always advise to start PVPing in T1 frigs is because you'll die a lot anyway (and the more you want to learn, the more you need to die). So best to keep it cheap.
Also, fast-paced frigate combat is arguably a little harder than fighting in sturdier ships, if you learn to think fast and survive in frigates you'll do well in bigger ships too (though obviously you'll have to learn some other stuff).

There is a reason even vets still fly t1 frigates. They are just lots and lots of fun....
I would emphasis that there is a massive difference with people that can fly their ship properly. And i don't mean in game skills, i mean out of game skills. Position, heat and cap management are all soo important. What to engage also is, but often enough you don't get that choice.
Also don't forget that all those amazing fights you see on youtube, there 100 fights that where total fails. In fact fraping and reviewing your fights is a good way to get better.
Death and Glory!
Well fun is also good.

Flying T1 Frigs means you have hardly anything to lose (5-8m ISK) and everything to gain. A well flown T1 Frig will kill many T2 frigs, Faction Frigs, Destroyers and even Cruisers if you know what you can and beat.
I'll post this 1v2 from last night, as it could not be more relevant:

The first one baited me, in comes the cavalry, and they both ended up going down, which they thought was hilarious.

Lesson: DO NOT underestimate the power of the T1 Frig!

My current favorite is a (widely underestimated) T1 frigate.
General hint, check people's killboards to get ideas for fits and engagement profiles.

I'm not a PvPer but just a general note about life and the human experience is that the concept of experience or learning comes from learning from one's "mistakes". You gain more experience thus learn more from a loss than you do a win. There really is no growth potential in an easy win and I'd bet that on a close fight the looser probably learns way more than the winner in most cases.
Take a professional ball player and have him go play little league ball for a few months, how much do you think he will learn in that time? Honestly he will probably degrade in that situation and get worse.
Now take a very good high school ball player and put him in the major league for a couple months. The kid will probably get his ass handed to him but when it's over and he goes back to high school ball I bet he is a far better player.
I understand that most PvPers are in it for the win but like I said you don't learn much from a win and in the beginning you will "learn" a metric **** ton. So might as well get those lessons in cheap ships. Honestly early on it's just about getting those loss mails under your belt.
As you get better and understand the game more and have better isk streams you can go out and PvP in expensive ships. You will be able to find your learning experiences by picking fights that you should probably loose but still find a way to win some of them.

Yes.
I'd say the difference between T1 and T2 hulls tilts the outcome of a fight maybe 10% of the time for a reasonably competent pilot. The other 90% of the time, if you'd been in the corresponding T1 hull with a proper fit, the outcome of a given fight would have been the same.
The big differences are number of pilots/ships in each party (for obvious reasons) and starting position (who's in their optimal damage application range first is a huge advantage). Having thermodynamics trained and using it ranks above how fancy and expensive your hull is on impacting the outcome of pvp, as well. |

On the t1 frigate discussion, the maulus and griffin are often the difference between winning and losing a fight in small gang engagements. For me its gotten to the point where I rarely take a fight against a fleet with a griffin if I have less than 5 people.

Or is it just about seeing what you can accomplish before being blown up (which happens in a couple seconds in a T1 frigate)? Winning solo fights as a new player is all about abusing your strengths. Surprise neuts or EWAR can really throw off even experienced players in expensive ships. Go in with a plan (IE I'm going to use these neuts against cap-intensive ships), figure out what your ideal targets are (blaster and laser boats), and go search them out. When you fail, you'll learn something new (that tormentor had a cap booster so my neuts weren't very effective) and you can use that knowledge to figure out how to win next time (that cap booster means he has no room for a web...so I'll use a fast ship and get under his guns, possibly with a tracking disruptor).
The above is a randomly concocted example and if you followed it exactly you'll probably die and learn a different lesson. However, it illustrates the thought process you should have while learning. Eventually you will have enough experience to make a pretty good guess how that enemy incursus is fit and what its strengths and weaknesses are. If you stick to a single frigate for a while and try a variety of fits you'll begin to get a good idea of how it stacks up against other frigs and the best ways to fit it for each situation. Sometimes the answer is don't engage at all - but making this decision comes from experience and loss. You want to make that decision logically (my fit isn't designed to deal with dual-web hookbills) instead of emotionally (ahhh faction frigate! scary!)
