You're never too old to have fun. Some find it silly, some can not live without it. Yes, today we're talking about Roleplaying.
A while ago I had an amusing but very fun conversation with an old friend who is now in Oracle. We chatted for ages on the different paths our lives took from when we used to mine together at launch. So amusing was our conversation that until this very day I actively roleplay my character with ethusiasm.
For those that don't roleplay or are afraid to try it, I would like to know why. Is there any good reason not to roleplay in a MMORPG these days?
Is it because of age? Do you think by acting in a game it somehow makes you immature? Or is it because you are self concious and are afraid to look silly?
Just curious to know what you all think and whether or not your actively RP in EVE.

Everyone roleplays in Eve, you have to, you aren't really there.
I guess you mean In Character roleplaying?
In that case, sure I do. I have played and GM'd roleplaying games for years, getting in to character is the most fun part.
Infact, I don't really see how you can fully enjoy Eve without roleplaying it. If you don't you will only ever be an observer of the universe, never truely part of it.

I would say number one reason is lack of imagination!
I want a BS... I want lots of isks... I want to be bigger and better than everyone else. Then when they get 'there' they get bored!
That is how many play this game.

Edited by: CaptainJack Sparrow on 07/11/2003 12:22:53 What is this Roleplay you speak of?
Is this some kind of treacherous act of wearing womens clothing and acting as a woman on the Gal-Com? I do not know why one should do such a strange thing, unless it be to lure one into a field of mines and blazing cannonfire! But this still a very strange way to do so.
EDIT: Oh. BatManolo here.

I try and get into the pirate hunter hunter character that iv chosen.
But its not easy, i get flamed 23/7, im just missunderstood .
not enough players play the role.
if u come to EVE and dont go into character, whats the point in being here , u will just take things too personally, where the fun in that.

Private Gan Ning, this is Captain MrPops, what the hell are you doing outside of the barracks when I clearly gave you the order to clean the Biomass Recyclers!
Get your ugly Caldari ass back to work before I call your mama and she feeds you Protein Delicacies!
I also told you not to wear that ridiculous device on your shoulders while you work! Do you want to accidentally shoot that Biomass Recyclers?
PRIVATE! your id card! there is something strange about it! umm what!? that is not a standard Caldari Navy Holographic card! What's with the neon in the background? Did you lose your card again and forge it at the local pub?
I also told you not to wear that ancient looking Rambo fatigue! Now get back into uniform!
Ummmm what? what? is that hair on your head? PRIVATE! Go to personnel grooming immediatly and get that Slaver head cut clean!
GO GO GO on the double!

"The human species suffers from a dimensional limitation. They are not able to understand that matter and mind are just one aspect of something more fundamental. We must strive to expand our perspective so we can see what our true reality is." Deep toughts by Mr.Pops, while consuming large quantities of Blue Pill and staring at the EVE gate in Genesis.

I would be careful of that lack of imagination accusation you just hurled there, Hardin.
Though the discussion i had once with you about the future of Amarr vs themselves and vs the Minmatars in Amarr channel, highly doubt you will remember it, was very nice and very in depth ... other members of that channel (which for me is the heart of roleplaying atm) seem to interpret Amarrian roleplay as "I despise everyone else", "I label people by race and not by what they say"
That is not a very imaginative way to roleplay... with all due respect my 15 year old brother could play like that.
It's a good thing i have other means of watching the conversations in that channel. They are very nice and very colourful.

Yes you are right but even those Amarrians you describe are playing a role - even if in a basic way. This contrasts with many others who participate in no shape or form!

A good example. I played a role with an alt, 100% IC. What do i get as a reply in corpchat(basuc corp that is)?
"Are you getting kicks out of this?"
"Somebody please shoot this guy"
And so forth. Some don't get the idea at all. It's fun to watch the flames and then ask things like:
"Alt? What ...you think this is some kind of a game? Grow up."

A little Roleplay 'Traffic Light' on character descriptions and corp descriptions would help.
Green = Roleplay required. Start talking about football and we'll tell you **** off.
Amber = All welcome, not bothered either way.
Red = No roleplay. Roleplayers will be sneered at.

your not?

I rp being an evil pirate, in fact I'm a vegetarian rl and sometimes I even feel guilty when I pk, especially when my bf;s adds to my guilt talking about sweet innocent noobs.
And no, this does not mean anyone gets their ship back or isk for a new one.
This is not a hijack

Lack of imagination? Maybe.
But for me roleplay has never really been part of our corp, its strange that we dont roleplay often. When we have, on occasion, it has been fun but as we're a multi-cultural corp i find that we'll just tend to have alot of arguments between the 4 races.
I'd like to get into more rp, maybe should suggest a "roleplay day" for our corp.

Also, maybe im doing something wrong, but it seems far easier to rp an Amarr or Minmitar than anything else.
And the most annoying thing i find when i have roleplayed is that some ppl will take it OOC and just start flaming you.

I think it all about going with the flow. For starters I play a little less than sane character, I will take risks when I really should stand down. I will throw fool hardy lines if they are needed even if they cause a little friction. But on the other hand I will talk about RL things aswell. I have a character in mind that I play as Isee fit in each situation whether RP or not. At the end of the day its about having fun and as long as you do then why worry too much.

ive been thinking on that to, maybe atleast we could make some official roleplaying banner wich devoted roleplayers could wear in their sigs at the forum? i could start up photoshop and make one right away.

Role play ?? I guess you are talking about this disease called RL which is going about ?
I hear its spread by cloning and sharing quafe ...two things Ive never tried.
Seriously though I like to RP on boards and when dealing with others in EVE. In Corp channels etc I flit in and out but usually out. Perhaps I should try to be more in. So HMV consider Andy Williams and Dean Martin to be "easy listening" do they? Tell that to my mate Dave, he's been deaf for 20 years.

Edited by: Zarquon Beeblebrox on 07/11/2003 15:04:32 Im roleplaying. I even try playing in char when i speak to (( IC: captains that clearly are speaking of his ship as it was a imaginary toy )).
Im comming from a year playing NWN on the best persistent role play server there is when it comes to NWN. (battledale for anyone intrested in nwn) Thats a server no one even accept that you know my chars name before iv told you it. Even if you can hover your mouse over me and read it your self. lol, wtf and smilys like ":)" is OOC, and should not be used in role play.
In EVE its hard to keep roleplaying when 99.999% are strictly OOC when they play. If i was to make IC comments about all OOC talk i over heard i would do nothing else. So i try to find a midle way, and when i come a cross someone roleplaying i make sure that i stay IC all the time and addk that person to my address book. I think that only by roleplaying my self, im able to bring more OOC players into IC players. And finaly im sure the one RP'ing will find each other and RP together, wether its as enemies or friends.
Captain: Admiral, I have found this really good feeld of roids, its just two jumps away.
Admiral: yes captain, i have intel about it, but we are not going to do any mining there. At least not this month.
Captain: But admiral sir, this place are all safe and we can make some good run's with out any loss in our ranks.
Admiral: Captain, im sure we can but we dont have the assets we need to invest in clones for our miners.
Captain: Admiral, well i have reserved a clone for me so im going there mining this really good ore's.
Admiral: Captain, no! I need you here guarding our miners.
Captain: yes sir admiral.
