I've just built a CNR and have never flown Ravens before. I'm a Domi pilot, been flying Level 3's and my drone skills are all maxxed out. Been reading lots of strings trying to accumulate fitting and flying knowledge on Ravens and have gotten so much conflicting info, that I'm frankly, quite baffled as to which approach I should take. I've been working on all my missile skills while building up a bank account and am ready to start to outfit my Raven. But I'm really in doubt as to which course I should take in two areas.
My Questions are: (Gonna be flying Level 4's ... no PvP, Drone skills maxxed, would like to have a tank that runs forever since I feel between missiles and drones I'll be able to kill anything)
1) Should I choose Siege or Cruise? I'm currently working on Level 3 in Cruise Missiles, with the goal of Cruise II's, but I've heard that Siege II's are better against larger targets. Keeping in mind that I'll be flying Level 4 missions, which way should I go? (Or doesn't it matter if my tank holds and my drone skills are maxxed.)
2) XL Shield Boost Boosters. I've trained to be able to use these, but the current cost of Gisti B's is 700 Million ISK. Several people call XL Boosters a waste. Before I spend that much money, I'd like to know if it's better to go a different route. (My goal is to have a tank that will run forever. Killing speed I don't think will be as critical.)
3) Pertaining to the whole SBA question. What is the reasoning behind the different shield tanking approaches. As an armor tanker, I understand an active tank with the best hardeners to cut down on incoming DPS, and then the best Repper to eliminate incoming DPS to allow maximum tanking time.
Thanks so much in advance for any help, and good hunting!! Sev

1. Personally, I'd say cruise missiles. They do much more damage against cruisers and battlecruisers (which arguable are the majority of the hit points in an average mission). Verses battleships, many would disagree with me, but I believe that cruises do around the same damage as siege. The reasoning is that although sieges to more damage per shot, all npc bs have defender missile capabilities. Since torps are slower then snails, you can expect more torps to be shot down en route to the target.
2. An gist L booster will be enough (with good shield skills) for all lvl 4 missions except for 2 (enemy abounds and in the mist of deadspace). Heck you can complete 90% of level 4's with large shield booster II (how I made the 150m for my gist booster). My gist L booster runs for a really really long time with 2x nos (around 6-7 min). It's been a while since I looked, but I think they go for around 150m?
3. You really only need to focus on active shield tanking in a raven, as passive tanking just doesn't work due to the amount of slots it takes up on a raven. Shield tanking takes the same approach that you stated. The only difference is that shield tanking is much more 'short term' then armor tanking. The cycle times between each boost is shorter and the boost takes effect at the beginning of a cycle, so you can better judge how well you are doing to tank. The only suggestion is to time your boosts so that you are consistently between 30-35% of your shield capacity. The reasoning is at that region, your passive tank is most active (the so-called sweet spot).

I recommend buying a regular raven and playing with the set up and running a few missions on it. no reason to risk a 1 billion isk navy raven.

This has been discussed quite often and there doesn't seem to be a real answer to it. Tech2 Cruise Missiles are rather useless and if the Kali Tech2 Siege nerf comes they probably are as well - so you would only fit Tech2 launcher for faster launching rate - i'm not sure if that would be really worth the learning time. In my experience torps are actually less often to be killed by defender missiles then cruises, as they often seem to be able to survive defender hits. On the other hand the slow flying speed of torps might require more micro-management and tech1 torps are pretty useless against frigs. At the moment i'd tend to say use cruise missiles.

Even with Shield Compensation 5 and both energy skills at 5 you'll have a very hard time to find a perma tanking setup with a Gist XL Booster. You will have to sacrifice some slots just to get enough cap regen together, which on the other hand will lower your tanking and/or damage dealing capabilities. It looks like Kali will offer some interesting options here (increasing cap regen or lowering cap need), but who knows how much they'll cost and how long it will take until you can get them. :)

hm... Shield Boost Amps are only for active tanking and like it was said before, that's basicly the only way to go on a Raven. What is argueable over SBAs though is, if using another hardener isn't the better option. From my calculation better use 2 hardeners of each type before choosing a SBA. -------------------------------------- Agent & Mission-Info: http://www.eveinfo.com Evewide Market-Info: http://eve-central.com/ |

if you want a tank that will perma-run use a gistii large with SBA which is much cheaper than an xl too

*Sell CNR *Buy Caldari Alt *Fit siege/em/therm/2xinvul/2xtp/4bcu/dc *Follow behind with domi with large shield transfers and maxed drones *Profit
If you must use cnr for pve, youll want to wait untill kali to see which comes out on top out of torps or cruise. Currently javelin torps > cruise but this looks set to change.

Guys, thanks so much for the great feedback. I will probably continue to skill Cruise V, and might as well skill Torps also. Use whichever works best down the road.
As to the XL Shield Booster, I got the info I was hoping for. Better off with Hardeners and SBA's.
I'll be taking out my CNR for test spins in level 3's to get a feel for tactics before I risk it in level 4's.
Thanks again for all the help!!!
