It is very much point of view. Simply stating that it will be good or bad for the game is frankly slightly offensive since it has absolutely no foundation in truth.
To replace the system with anything will simply make that thing mandatory. Skill? Everyone will training. Mod? Everyone MUST fit it.
To forcibly remove the ability to use bookmarks is even trickier. You'll have to check, every single time, someone warps to a gate if he doesn't warp too close, and if he does the game will have to correct. The question here is, how would such a solution affect if you warp to a gang mate? Most probably, it will not be possible to move gangs rapidly without fundamental changes to the warp system.
Speaking of fleets, if insta-like options are removed, how will you move those big cumbersome battleships anywhere? Travel times for battleships are currently one minute and ten seconds per system average. If insta options are removed, travel times for battleships will not double, they will tripple. All that has as effect is to make micro warpdrives mandatory, with afterburners being the barest minimum if the pilot is feeling suicidal.
And pods. They're bloody expensive, and will likely stay that way. Quite a few people are getting podded daily, just imagine what that number will look like if insta options are removed. Battleship speed, shuttle defences, absolutely no fitting options. Going into enemy territory is suicide - unless you bring a ******* huge fleet, that is.
In the end, removing insta options will, I feel, significantly worsen this game. Travel times will manifold increase, warfare will heavily favour the immobile or the blob (NEITHER of which are actually a kind of warfare that's fun nor good for the game), and I'm not certain the mineral market will be able to keep up with the loss rates that will result. In short, removing insta options will make people quite EVE. Not the odd guy, but more likely in the numbers that will make it hard for us forum*****s to keep up in asking for their stuff.
The warp-to-0km option is a mid-way solution. In most cases it changes nothing. It'll not be the end of EVE as we know it, it'll not change EVE as we know it. It will do one thing - remove the need for massive amounts of bookmarks. No. Not only that. It'll also give the devs a working platform for improving combat in the future. Instead of having the travel problem - because travelling in EVE without instajumps is a problem - moved from a player solution into the hands of the developers. It will enable the developers to see "maybe having such a fool-proof way of docking isn't such a good idea" and be able to do something about it - in the small steps that is NECESSARY. Without alienating half of EVE.
Sweeping, panicked, changes doesn't do any thing good to the game. Much better take what you have now, move the problem closer to home, and work from there. Exactly what the devs are doing.
Here's a question for you: what's the number 1 reason people leave EVE (terminate their accounts, that is)? - Am I in the coolest alliance or what? |
