I was just wondering if anyone has managed to use cloaking devices to do something movie-esque awesome, like decloak a bunch of ships to spring a trap on someone or something.
Basically, something more interesting then cloaking a carrier at an SS. --- Recently returned from vacation on a sunny planet in 0.0. Guess which one! |

Well I don't know how you'd rate these as movie-esque but if the baseline is hiding at a SS I'll spill.
Probably the most dramatic was on a cargo run. My Prowler got chased accross five systems by an interceptor. He was right on me. We'd jump through a gate at the same time and I would only just get to warp before he locked me on the other side of the gate.
When I got to my destination I had to do a 170 deg turn to warp and decided my luck had held long enough. I warp towards the gate most in line at 60km and cloaked as soon as I got out of warp. I started to align under cloak and watched the inty run straight through the gate. I decloaked and warped off, before I dropped out of warp he had reappeared in local so the trick didn't fool him long.
Long enough though.

Problem with using cloaks to spring a trap is that they have a recalibration time preventing you from locking targets, and with a Prototype cloak, and cloaking 5, the shortest you can get that time to is 15seconds, which is quite a long time :(

Had a similar thing once, however I was in the inty. But he ended up in front of a corpmember when he decloacked

Another big problem is that you still show up in local when cloaked.
If you wanna surprise the enemy, it's much easier to simply warp in on them, than decloak.

In a stabbed out, cloaked up Bestower:
Was chased by a speedy AC tempest for 3 jumps - he warped just slightly faster than me. On the third jump, I tried to activate the cloak immediately after jumping. He had apparently just enough ground to see where I was. I tried to prealign while cloaked, but he'd seen me just barely, and MWD'd over to my area. After one miss and turnaround, he decloaked me, and got off 1 volley of his AC before I warped. This put me into "ship is out of control" structure, and the second volley finished me off.
If he hadn't had that MWD and nanofibers, I'd have gotten out.
Bye bye Medium Control Tower I was moving. ------------------------------------
Nano'd up, MWD'd up, cloaked out Sigil: Led a gateganking 2 cruiser team five jumps into 0.0. Was a about 10 seconds ahead of them, and was staying that way. I got to a system whose only branches were two dead ends, and made a decision.
I activated the cloak, watched them split up and follow my assumed path a few seconds later, and made my way back to the gate to pick up my POS delivery, never to see them again.

Yesterday I was going to empire to get some skills. I fitted my kestrel with a protocloak and headed to the 0.0-empire bottleneck system wich is often camped by yarrers. When i warped in at the gate at 15km there were 2 b-ships and an inty with all their drones out at the gate, they spotted me just before I cloaked and dragged their drones all over the place to try to decloak me. I sat there with my heart pounding for 5-7 minutes trying to get to the gate but no luck. Finally a drone got within 2500m wich almost gave me a heart-attack so i turned around and warped away.
But I must say gj to those guys...i've never thought about dragging the drones in such manner to decloak a ship :) -------

yarr'ing in a group of 4 pilgrims is great fun. if u want to be dramatic and have a laugh u do what i've done and get all 4 to warp in from different points and approach a raven ratting in a belt. when u get each guy 5km off (u have to be careful not to decloak each other, all 4 uncloak at the same time and before he knows it he's scrammed with 8 points, cap is getting sucked harder than an essex prostitute and he has 20 t2 drones on him.
The surprise factor is great fun.

I once jumped into 1V-, Scalding Pass and the gate I jumped thrue was camped by 2 or 3 RA ships (dunno what ships at least 1 inty but allas). So I sat there (cloacked), thinking what to do. I had a lot of tech2 stuff and ammo, so I wasen't too keen on loosing it.
If I was to decloack and activate my cloack, they would shurely approach my position, decloack me and *****me. Then, some poor sucker jumped into the system thrue the same gate I did in a Minmatar Hauler. He tried to run for it right away, and all of the foes engaged him.
Using the cloud of confusion, I aligned my ship for the station and emediatly cloacked, moving away from the gate at low speed, hoping, nobody would warp in from the station and decloack me.
Meanwhile the other hauler got killed by RA and they where probably busy examining the remaining cargo.
As soon as I got on safe distance from the inty (30km or so) I took my gamble, decloacked and gave warp command to head to station.
I got out in one piece ---------------------- We don't care, what you say. I'mma do my thing, from day to day... We don't care, what you think. 'Cause in this world, it's Swim-or-Sink... |

well I learnt a huge lesson...
Moving a absolution to cache from empire only had 5 wcs out of the 7 I could use and had two nano's to make up. I was using my insta jumps to the pipline when I see a Prohp decloak at the gate I insta warped to. seemed he had just jumped through. now I was in a hurry to get to point B from point A he takes most of my shields down when I without thinking jump through the gate.
1 maledicton and about 4 t1 assorted cruisers, I sigh heavily...
quickly scan around find the nearest thing infront of me that was also pointed away from them. I activate my warpdrive. going into warp, comming out of warp. crap i think 6 points are on me. and the malediction has me webbed and scrambled.. I bash to warp to button in a vain atempt that i might oneday get my pod out, then the mwding malediction bumps me.. out of range of enough of the cruisers that my warp bashing works. I am in warp 17% armour shocked and horrified gatecampers screaming.
I am thinking I am so screwed... I arrive at my destination. turn to warp to a group of objects, enter warp as 4 of them come out of warp like a swarm of angry bees. I sweating badly at this stage. thinking to my self WHY oh WHY did i listen to my ceo? I arrive at my destination at 100km and they all warp in 80km infront of me. I about turn warp off to the mid warp safe spot i made. and propmtly cloaked.
I watched my scanner as they got in covert ops ship of some sort and tried in vain to probe my ship.
I ask in alliance if anyone can help a stranded pilot. 1 hour later a lone tarnis shows up. I think WTF? he asked me to uncloak and locks me.. and uses a small remote armour repper to fix me up.
Sadly I forget his name but will not forget what he did
cheers mate if your out there. -

A hostile eagle was making the life sour for our frigates during the campaign to retake D7. He had several sniper spots and safes and moved a lot but after some creative probing I managed to get one of his safes close to one of the gates.
He returned to the safe several times but warped away again before I could get into position for a warp in. But each time I got closer and closer to the point where he landed.
Finally I was within 5km from him when he landed, I called in the support, uncloaked and put 4 points on him and started orbiting at 500m. He didn't manage to hit me once before the support arrived and jammed/killed him.

My corp was out on an op in Syndicate, and we ran into a group of KIA doing the same. We were on one side of a gate, they were on the other. We sent a scout through, he stayed cloaked, scouted them out. The whole battle group of 12+ inty's, cruisers and BS's jumps through the gate. We stay cloaked on the other side, it was really quiet, the calm before the storm. Our wing leader calls the primary, and suddenly, the whole group decloaks and all hell broke lose. We cleaned house.

Back when I was in KIA, we camped a 0.0 entrance with like 8 stealth bombers and a ceptor (pre-dictor days).
Basically, all the bombers sat about 25-40km off the gate, and the ceptor was right on it. Whenever somebody jumped in or warped to the gate, the ceptor would lock them down. We got alot of cruisers and 1 or 2 bs.
The best part though, was that everyone thought they could just kill the inty and run off, cause it's just a stupid little crow, right? Wrong. As soon as the target was locked down, BAM! 8 stealth bombers decloaked and instantly locked up and ECM'd the target. At this point, the pilot was probably ****ting his pants, and then we sent them somewhere in the area of 20 cruise missiles.

After my short, horrible tenure in Knights of the Southerncross I used to do pipe runs all the time in my prowler quite often breaking through RA gate camps. (They always relied on a bubble, snipers and no tacklers). I could easily tank the damage from them and warp off.
On numerous occasions I would just fly back and forth to **** them off. --------------

This happened a few days ago in 68f. I was in my hound cloaked at the station when i noticed an AXE eagle that warped like 200k above station. i approach him and then he cloakes..... so i just go full speed and try to guess at his location..... then a few minutes later he was 50 k behind me so i turn around and follow him. he cloakes again and i just hit full speed and hope for the best. i was going over 120 meters faster than him so i was hoping to get him and provide a warpin point for support. Then i go forwards to his last location for a few minutes and suddenly he uncloakes. He is now 2300 meters above me and i just freeze. I cant do anything but stare when distance becomes shorter and shorter. it came between 2000 and 2100 meters at the shortest distance and i could barely speak on ts because i just froze. Then he cloaked again and we didnt get him again

Edited by: Ranger 1 on 09/11/2006 14:08:06 There are few sports more enjoyable than scout shuttle hunting in a Hound.
You know the shuttles I'm talking about, the pesky scouts in shuttles that warp in 200km off of your groups position and rely on their near insta warp ability to leave if anyone gets within range.
Fortunately, most of these scouts do not count on the cloaked speed of the swift Minmatar Hound. Rapidly closing ground to within 5km or less, insta-locking with your already hot projectile weapons and cruise missiles. By the time you actually become visible to them, it's already too late.
Sure, its not a victory to write home about. But it requires a bit of skill, timing, and above all it's fun.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 09/11/2006 14:57:48 Edited by: Plutoinum on 09/11/2006 14:57:24 My funniest cloak story went that way (perhaps a bit lame), the steps:
- needed some pos fuel real quick in 0.0 in Curse, because my pos ran out within a few hours - found it in the market, bad thing: it was in the home system of some of our enemies (ouch) - needed it anyway, so I prayed, that they sleep (on Saturday afternoon) - jumped into a nanofiber sigil, but forgot to fit a cloaking device - soon as I entered system, I got chased by hostiles - me warping from safe to safe for 20 minutes, peak around 23 hostiles and 6-7 coverts, totally amusing, but I couldn't go afk without being able to cloak - I decided that I don't want to do that for the whole saturday evening, especially because my pos wanted it's fuel - me getting on my other account to get my own covert char there with another cloaking device in cargo - my covert char arrives in hostile system like 10 minutes later - I prepair an insta bm for the station and an undock safe (safe to warp to after undocking without the need to align) - give instas and cloaking device to my hauler in space - scout station with my covert, waiting for a moment without hostiles ... finally last of them there warps away - insta with my hauler to their home-station and dock, several hostiles on station, I fit cloak on hauler and grep pos fuel within seconds, undock, see hostiles undocking too, but I'm already entering warp with my sigil to the safe I prepaired before (puh !)
Won. Had cloakable nano indi with pos fuel on safe and covert ops scout. I moved both out of that hostile system and fueled my pos.
Like I said, maybe lame, but fun anyway, if you have a plan, follow it and everything works like expected.

I got a story for you. I was moving my Moros dreadnought from the north of eve to the south where I live. Having no jump drive calibration skills, I was forced to take a long 11-jump trip, circumnavigating the edge of empire space. Had I the skills, I could have made a 4-jump trip right through the middle. I found a cyno pilot for hire and got to work. They were new but good at what they did. I provided an executioner frigate, a cyno generator, liquid ozone and 1m isk per jump (a reasonable rate!).
Most of the systems I went through had stations and I asked the pilot to set the cyno outside the station - not too close or I'd appear inside it and bounce off and not too far or I'd end up way outside the docking range. Having low slots full of cargo expanders so I could bring a lot of stuff with me and having absolutely no tank, I was armed with nothing but a cloaking device for defense and a top speed of 1m/s, making me unable to warp or get back within docking range of the target station if a jump went wrong. Some of the systems, however, had no stations. I was about 5 jumps into my trip when the event happened.
My cyno pilot, one "Areah Mar'khet", was in a target system. 0.4 security rating; no station; empty local - another routine jump. As I clicked the "Jump to member" button, gang chat flashed. "DON'T JUMP IN!". I panicked and when the jump was complete, I noticed there were two people now in local with us. I offlined a few expanders, meaning I could move but my cargo hold was jammed so full that warping was impossible. I flew approximately 4km away from my immobilised hired cyno pilot and hit F1 - the huge ship vanished. My stomach churned. "What if they are in battleships or HACs? What if they warp to the cyno on their overview and decloak me? I can't even warp!", the thoughts raced through my mind.
A plan started to form, involving offlining the remaining cargo expanders and jettisoning my precious cargo, not half as precious as the 1.7 billion isk ship they were in. "Or perhaps I could destroy my attackers?", I postulated, checking my drone bay. I had remembered to stock a full stack of Ogre I heavy combat drones. Could I take them on? What if they call in support? "Oh god", I thought, "What if they use an interceptor? I can't hit those with ogres..". I regretted not bringing some medium or light drones.
Thirty seconds passed, a minute, then another. Perhaps I was in the clear. One name vanished from local as the pilot presumably jumped out, ignoring the cyno field in the system. With 8 minutes left on the cyno timer clock, someone warped in. It was a single tech 1 frigate, but he could possibly warp scramble me and call in support. I stayed cloaked, barely 5km from the frigate when gang chat blinked again. "He wants 5 million...", Areah said. I thought slowly as I watched the frigate orbit my cyno buddy. At any second, he could get within 2.5km and it could be game over for me. "Tell him the ship's worth under 1mil", I spat back, the Gallente in me demanding that I haggle. "He says the Cyno generator is worth 4mil" was the reply, promptly followed by a sigh and 5 million isk trickling into Areah's wallet from my own.
The pilot took the isk and left, never noticing the transparant behemoth next to him. Could he have called in sufficient force to eliminate my Moros? Could I have destroyed him with Ogre Is? Would my plan to jettison cargo and warp have saved my ship if the **** hit the fan? I'll never know, and I'm glad for that. "The Mouldy Shoe" reached its destination ISS Fabrica on schedule, carrying much needed supplies from the north. In defence of the Moros, she does look like a mouldy shoe.
