To actually answer the OP's question: Yes, there have been many setbacks during our time in Eve that could have caused another alliance to fold. There are several reasons why that hasn't happened.
First, our internal culture is such that most Goons would not want to play Eve if they couldn't play within Goonswarm. Goons who get burned out might unsubscribe (which as we all know, is rarely permanent), but it's rare that they'd join another alliance. There have been corporations who split off to strike out on their own, but even they are usually still playing with Goons. Being in Goonswarm has usually been more important to our members than "winning" Eve. Sure, being successful isn't nothing, but it's not so important that we'd quit Eve if we couldn't be on top of the pile.
Second, since Goons are more likely to unsubscribe than to join other alliances, we tend to have a reserve of players who may return when there's some butts to kick. This takes the place of the phenomenon other alliances undergo, wherein successful alliances often start to grow rapidly, only to see a mass exodus when things get boring or the alliance starts to fail to meet its goals. Goonswarm's nontraditional recruiting practices have prevented the boom-and-bust which has been the death of several once-successful alliances. With another alliance, a series of setbacks would lead to players jumping ship to join another alliance. In Goonswarm, at our worst, people just stop playing until things pick back up again.
Third, we have built an amazingly cohesive and flexible organizational structure. There are a host of people fulfilling different roles based on their interests. Also, no one person is in charge of any one thing. We also learn from our mistakes (like failing to pay our sov bill in Delve), which is why we now have such flexible organizational structure now. Also, there's not much in the way of perks or prestige in being a Goonswarm director. People who are good directors are respected for doing good work, but nobody fawns over them just because they're directors. Directors who no longer do a good job (usually due to burnout) are replaced as needed with no real penalty. This usually prevents incompetent, egocentric jerks from trying to seize power just to make themselves feel superior (with one notable exception, heh). We also have a very good team of diplomats who maintain cordial relationships with just about everyone worth our time.
TL;DR: We have a bunch of guys who want to play with each other, who don't get too wrapped up in ego or being "elite" and who have developed an organizational structure that prevents s***lords from running the whole thing into the ground. So far, anyway. |

Personally, I would think that it's actually more rare for any other alliance to actually want ex Goons in their corp or alliance...
...it's not something by their choice or design, rather of how Goons are perceived in and out of game.
