Ok, ive been getting different views from different places on this. A few corpm8's told me 0.0 ratting was more profitable, but I also read a thread on here saying lvl 4's were pretty profitable... I mean in 0.0 you get the loot, and the bounty. On a mission you geet the loot, bounty, reward, bonus, and lp, even though bounties are reduced. I was kinda hoping lvl 4's would be at least as profitable seeing as i destroyed my raven in 0.0 so i could eventually get one in empire.
But, why would CCP put in lvl 4's that you must grind lower missions for days and weeks to get to if it was less profitable than 0.0 ratting, where all you have to do is walk in to a safe alliance.

This seems to be a hot topic contested by proponents of both camps :)
My experience is mostly mission running with a few forays into 0.0 for ratting.
0.3 Q20 agent gives 10k lp's with the 2 connections books at lvl 3, I wont bore with specifics just say that I was clearing around 1.5 bill per month playing 8 hours a say. I flew a Domi with no guns just drones so was by no means an Uber Runner. with a supported Raven with high skills you could double that income.
This was in 0.3 so that figure would substantially increase in 0.0 and decrease ofc as the system sec increased. I get only 2500 lp's for a mission in a 0.6 system for the same mission and without connections.
This big difference is the reason some 0.0 ratters claim they have a better income I think. Afaik a top mission with Q20 agent in 0.0 with both books at lvl V gives over 15k lp's thats a +3 implant per hour or could be a connections book worth 80 mill for the same points.
My limited experience of ratting in 0.0 yielded just 5 mill per hour running solo in a 10 belt system ( not true 0)
being solo meant I had to have half my attention on local and couldnt really work efficiently. To maintain a steady 8 hours of belt ratting even at 10 million per hour would be very nerve wracking, so I would say lvl 4 hi Q mission running with 2 connections at 4 or 5 will win in the long term.
who would spend 8 hours a day hunting the same rats in the same belts for weeks on end ? if you get officer spawns every few days then yes maybe ratting will win out.
just my personal experience.

0.0 ratting generally nets in the region of 40-50M an hour, assuming you loot everything. So its probably about on-par with low sec missions, and a lot higher than high sec ones. And when you consider that its probably safer ratting in 0.0 than it is running around solo in low-sec, i'd have to say 0.0 is the way to go.

0.0 can avg 10-40 million on avg per hour, dont need massive skills just a good alliance and good true low sec, and a outpost to refine and sell your loot, (unless you own a carrier and can jump in and out of random systems) mission running has avged me about 15-20 mill per hour consistently, in high sec a .9 system, no worry of loseing my 500 mill in implants, taking offers and nice loot drops about 200 mill a week not to mention long term you can install jump clone in empire with standings
All pretty much depends on how you want to play eve, just 2 different sources of income, 1 week ill be in 0.0 ratting just to get isk the next week im running missions for implants _______________________________________________ Life is a game if your not winning you must be loseing.

As someone who has done both I can say with certanty the missions (lvl 4) give more money than 0.0 belt ratting UNLESS you get super officer spawns (which I never have, not once, not f**king once I tell you) _______________________________________________

0.0 > L4 missions you have to collect all the loot and refine it mind. bountys alone wont cut it.
if you can fly a carrier to jump all the npc lewts to empire = winah!

The issue with the lvl 4 mission is you need to finish it to get the full advantage, which can sometimes be a nuisance
With the ratting you do it as and when you please for however long - I think that advantage alone outweighs everythign a mission can offer/
p.s mission loot sucks compare to ratting loot.

I don't know if the 0.0 region I rat in just sucks or what, but I am pretty sure level 4 missions would be more lucrative. I haven't seen any officers, and the only Dread I came across an ally was already engaged with. I make 2-3 mil an hour on bounties alone, not sure on loot as I just stockpile it for the time being.
Since I started playing this game I read that heading out to 0.0 is like some major goal, where the space is rich and you can make your fortune. The asteroid belts where I am are the same as in Empire, except there is Jaspet and the rocks are bigger. The biggest rats I see are 950k battleships. I must have killed 30-40 Dread Guristas in Empire... in the couple weeks I've ratted 0.0 I've only seen one.
I think CCP really needs to look at buffing up some of these 0.0 regions. Something is wrong when I can make more isk in highsec than I can in an entire region of 0.0.

the systems with the high end ores are best , i wouldnt bother ratting in a system that doesnt get 3x 1.85mil bs spawns

I made more ratting in 0.0 than I do mission running. It was also far easier (to tank).
Note that this was not just sneaking into 0.0 and ratting, it was alliance territory and my corp had a POS in system to safespot to in case of hostiles, yadda yadda.
System had a TrueSec of -0.7 (if memory serves), had 15 belts and would routinely spawn trip 1.5 BS. Park alt at the POS, kill the rats, alt warps in and tractors loot. Rinse, repeat.
I think the answer to 'which is better' depends greatly on the quality of your 0.0 space, how much competition you have in ratting, and how secure your alliance's space is.

I'm not in any alliance and I have a set of +5 plugged in my head so it is a clear choice for me to stay in the empire running lvl 4. I'd trade making less money with gaining faster skill points.

remember half or more of the bs's in missions dont drop loot, bounty's are less than in 0.0, but you get lp.

0.0 NPC hunting is approx 50% more profitable than lev 4 missions in lower end of high sec on good agent and skills. That is with taking into account general 0.0 'inefficency' like need to haul stuff in and out, ocasional fleet operations or gate camping etc. It's also a lot easier to tank 0.0 spawns than lev 4 missions. And if you are in proper alliance and pay attention to intel channels you will not get caught pants down while ratting so it's also safer than lev 4 missions where you can lose your well fitted battleship to various bad things (drone agro, lag, random bugs). Lev 4 missions in high sec are on the other hand a bit more stressfree, as if you die you dont need to worry about getting your pod out but you can just sit there and curse for a while
