Also, White Wolf managed to completely destroy their own WoD setting in the recent re-write of their mythology.
Umm, what? The new Vampire is simply better than the old one on pretty much any standard you care to name. (etc)
This, I'm afraid, is purely down to personal opinion. It's not objecrively better, it's only better to some people. As it happens I know more people who dislike the new games and prefer the old ones but that's probably just my local demographic. There are many improved features in the new systems, as well as many steps backwards in creativity.
I'm taking the tack of agreeing to disagree with people because trying to get them to change their minds on these things is fruitless and akin to trying to pursuade someone to swap political party affiliations
Quite true.
Games liking and dislikes are very much personal opinion, and that's the way it should be. I was just saying that the person I was responding to had a very one-sided view of the new WoD, which I hear mostly good things about myself (and I've read the 4 new corebooks and about 8 of the supplements, so I can base my own opinion on more than wild handwaving).
The new Mage I'm "meh" about, I think there's a good game lurking in there somewhere but it needs some help as a game line. The new Vampire and Werewolf are imho fantastic, and Promethean is mucho cool (just read it some weeks back).
At the moment the WW game I'm most into is Exalted, actually. That game kicks ass, and Creation is a pretty unique take on the fantasy genre. But that's another topic...

I honestly can't understand why you guys are so worried about this takeover. There are two things that are likely to happen in the future.
1) CCP is going to release a new MMORG using the World Of Darkness setting. Probably in 2-4 years time though. 2) Whitewolf is going to create CCG based on the EVE online world.
Given CCP's track record with EO I'm not worried at all. It's easy to understand why they don't want to do EVE 2, or another space MMMORG for that matter. It's also easy to understand why they would rather implement a fantasy MMORG based on a already existing fantasy setting, rather than create their own from scratch. The only question in my mind is if they will they release a sharded or unsharded vampire MMORG.

Well, since CCP is the controlling partner here, I'm a bit worried that CCP will siphon White Wolf's development talent and resources towards EVE, leading to less White Wolf games, slower release schedule and maybe cancellation of less popular game lines. I hope to be wrong in this, but can't help but worry a little.
In the best case scenario, the companies operate independently and just share resources where needed. It can work out, if both parties are smart and keep fans of CCP *and* White Wolf games happy. I'm both, myself (but have much more time and money invested in White Wolf games).

Oh definitely agreed
Exalted is creative and different enough to slip outside the general 'fantasy' tag in my opinion and that's one of the reasons I like it so much.
Hm, I think this is rapidly going Out Of Pod.
An Exalted MMO... oh wouldn't that be obscene. They could do charm combos the way Saga of Ryzom does integrated action stanzas and everything.

I hope I can lay some fears to rest, CCP will continue to devote our time and effort to EVE, but some of the technologies coming to EVE in the future (full body avatars, environmental interaction, etc.) will be used in future MMOGs based off the WW intellectual properties.
White Wolf will continue to work on their pen and paper projects, will internalize production of the EVE CCG and start on a small line of EVE RPG and gaming products.
Both companies will continue in their natural paths, but with a larger creative team behind both efforts. This should benefit both communities in the short and long terms.

Sounds good to me, Ive long been a fan of White Wolfs products, WoD is dark it fits the style CCP seem to like for their game.
EvE p&p wil flesh out the backstory and give in-game RPers more to work with, and knowing that the code they use for out of ship interaction will generate more profit in the future will likely increase the revenue CCP will be able to allot to it. With luck this will lead to both EvEs out of ship interaction and the new MMO being able to share a lot of resources I cant see there being much but graphics, content, and balance being different between the two.
I always thought EvE was WoD in space oddly enough. Blood Raider Covenant anyone, hopelessness and despair, massive imbalance of power between the immortals and the lowly normal folk, with a liberal sprinkling of violence and intrigue
But still I must admit, with such a HUGE change to both parties, I have my worries.

OK, so in summary it is effectively an intellectual property sharing agreement, each company using the IP of the other to best use its strengths. White Wolf will produce paper based EVE along with their existing product base and CCP will produce an WoD MMO.
Sounds good, best of luck to both companies. :) --

I think this might actually be a winner for CCP. It's not as if they can't just double the company size while developing a second game and it makes the overall CCP brand alot more secure from the dreaded external takeover.
White Wolfs worlds and source books are some of the best out there in the roleplaying community.
CCP while making this game will have all the art work, characters, skill system, developmental tree, historys, background, etc etc already there and just waiting a bit of balance when they have all the graphic's, gameplay stuff sorted.
Saves doing it all from scratch....
Plus they got a massive White Wolf fan base of Emo's, roleplayers and fit goth chicks to tap into.
Also its not a bloody elf hack and slash WoW clone thank bloody gods.

Come on CCP, integrate into the game. For instance..
The Minitar were enslaved because the Amarr needed them to farm them for blood. Now the Amarr are desperate to subjugate them as their quadrillion pint supply of O+ blood is nearly depleted.

Yes they are, as it states succinctly in the WW press release.
On a more serious note, isn't it time for a cyber-punk vampire game?

So long as WW dosn't make Eve into a LARP like their other games, and dosn't make Mage an MMO, I'm fine with ANYTHING that they do....
except maybe changling.... I hate changeling.... with a passion.....
Oh, and most of the WW lovers I know aren't goth. And the LARPs tend to have a large number of females, quite a few of which who are above average in looks. At least in Ohio.

I have warm fuzzy feelings about White Wolf. I've been playing their games since I was this tall.
The strongest memory I have of it is playing V:M at a friends house at 3am and realizing that I was the only guy with 11 young women... The game devolved from there. Thanks White Wolf.

I played a pvp MUD called Vampire Wars, was based on the White Wolf game. It's still around but apparently it's gone carebear. I'd play a 3d vamp game if someone made one that wasn't lame.

The upcoming Warhammer MMO is based on Warhammer Fantasy, not 40k. Those gameworlds are very, very different. Honestly, if they announced a 40k MMO, I'd probably need some new underwear.
Also, Exalted was easily the best thing that White Wolf has ever done. In fact, if you ask me, it's the only thing they've done that hasn't sucked, besides maybe Mage. - - - Hitomi Ayame, Lady Marshal, RKOK Executor, KHAN

Oh God no... as owner of a smallish game retailer I wouldn't wish GW on anyone. I stopped doing business with them about 2 years ago after yet another go at it. Their games are great certainly, but as a company I wouldn't work with them if you paid me. I think WW is a perfect fit for CCP, and they have no properties that would conflict with EVE. Also, rumors of WW having financial trouble are just that, rumors. ---------------

TBH I'm unhappy with the merger.
I know CCP wants to get the best out of their brand and is trying to push gaming branding, but I think in the end this is going to hurt the quality that they build their reputation on.
Speaking of reputation, I've heard some bad things about how White Wolf has managed their games. Maybe thats why they're nearly bankrupt?
Keep it simple, CPP. Keep it small, but high quality.

Read my post above... TBH of all the companies I've worked with over the past 10 years or so, WW is one of the best. As a retailer and as someone with a close friend that has a large wholesale business I can tell you that 99.9% of rumors you hear about most game companies are just rumors. Any slow bussiness times WW has had are more due to market fluctuations and interest in gaming in general than any decisions that WW made. Of all the larger game companies of it's type, WW is one of the healthies and has a good reputation with those in the know. ---------------

Let me tell you a story about a game called Neocron... Developed by a wonderful, small, high-quality company called Reakktor out of Germany, it was EVE-meets-Planetside. Cutthroat, solely zone-based PvP - just like EVE. Awesome story, awesome concept, thoroughly fun beta. The main difference with EVE was that it was FPS (or third person if you messed with the camera).
I plunked down a lot of time in the community. Followed it from a throw-away message board during pre-production, through two or so professional boards and every phase of extra-dev beta. Even did a bit of dialog/writing and have my name and handle in the credits (wouldn't be too proud of it now though - couldn't write worth a **** then).
But... Reakktor didn't have the resources to push their game to the masses, being a small company and all. As a result, they partnered with CDV to publish Neocron. *Poof* went the innovative features. *Poof* went the solely zone-based PvP - replaced with a PvP flag. And in the end? After mandating these changes, CDV didn't even do a particularly good job of marketing the game.
Put simply, Reakktor got ****** because they didn't have enough bargaining power to hold on to their vision.
So maybe someone with a large bag of money comes along, offering CCP a chance to do something they've always wanted with EVE. Only... there are a few things that make the prospective partner nervous about EVE. I mean... should you really lose your ship and implants when you die? I dunno... that sounds like it might frighten some people...
That's why the CCP-WhiteWolf merger is a good idea. So the combined entity can tell "prospective partner X" to go screw themselves if needed. They'll either work with CCP's version of EVE or no EVE [or no White Wolf property], and that's the way it should be.
