With the merger with White Wolf it was stated that there would be a World of Darkness MMO made.
This upset me at first seeing a split in CCP's focus and also a competing game in the MMO Market.
However I think it would be a grand idea to keep the players of both games connected not just by company that makes the game but also by community.
One way to do this is to allow Subscribers with a CCP account i.e. an EVE account play World of Darkness as well on the same subscription and vice versa. If you were to get tired of EVE and you wanted to take a break for a few months what better way to cure your boredom by playing World of Darkness, another MMO from the company we love. Also Allow your voice account to carry over to both games...
This idea would accomplish two goals. It would still allow for expansion of the CCP clientele. It would also heighten the value of a player's CCP account being able to play 2 games for the same cost.
I'd say the only catch would be that you could only log into one game at a time.
Now it was also said that there would be about 2-3 years of design work put into a World of Darkness MMO before it even gets developed so we don't really have to worry about it coming into being any time soon... although I still think this type of model should be used to retain current clients and bring in new ones.

I've heard that White Wolf has been on the verge of bankrupcy for some time now, don't know exactly why. Would be cool if CCP stepped in behind the screen to save that great company that gave us Mage: The Ascension :)

Edited by: Tachy on 12/11/2006 10:16:36 They busted a couple of mostly software related projects lately, like the last Vampire thingy.
Fantastic story, great optics, nice atmosphear, game breaking bugs and no real fixes. Half the promised features did only make it into ads and onto the box, but not into the game.
You can grab it for cheap, and with the fixes done by players you can even play it. I really liked it. The Vampire feeling was presented nicely, with quite some options and introductions for people who never touched the world of darkness before. But with all those bugs, it was not a great promo action for the game world behind it and I'd be surprised if they made any money from the game in the end. I know that many game shops took the boxes back without questioning after the first 2 weeks after the sales started. Some shops even removed it totally from their shelves within a month because the customers have been really unhappy about the content of the nice box.
'Competing' probably as in 'Most features in EVE aren't even half finished, now they want to do another online game???'. From a dev's point of view doing something different after 4-7 years certainly is a very good thing to do. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

I meant more competing in the MMO field. I could see some people leave EVE for World of Darkness which I'm now going to call WOD... hahah... WoD... Hahahaha.../me coughs...

Well if they do create a new genre, I do hope they keep it all on the same cluster. I would hate to kill vampires on another server other than Tranquility.
Come on CCP, integrate into the game. For instance..
The Minitar were enslaved because the Amarr needed them to farm them for blood. Now the Amarr are desperate to subjugate them as their quadrillion pint supply of O+ blood is nearly depleted.
or the Caldari find some skill books that allow them to use magic. Along with missiles, the best ships in the game, and ecm, they can use the dark arts should those fail. +20 fire storm ftw!

IMO merging with (sounds more like CCP is taking over though) a bankrupt company will be a big mistake for a company that is just now rising and isnt the market mogul yet. The merger can drag both companies down..
I would hate to see EVE and CCP gone cause of some emo-fantasy MMO project!

I've never heard of this White Wolf company before... but after reading some of these threads, it sounds like they are going to destroy both CCP and EVE...

Yes, if they make World of Darkness and it will have some depth and meaningfull pvp and don't be just mission whoring and stuff like, then I'll definately take a closer look at it and maybe subscribe.
OK, I continue to play EVE anyway as long as CCP doesn't screw it up of course and World of Darkness isn't supposed to come within the next 2 years anyway.

Pff, I really liked Bloodlines, and the first Masquerade as well ... However, let's face it, both games ended up in the bargain bin really fast. Seems like there aren't too many pc gamers interested in the World of Darkness.
Also, White Wolf managed to completely destroy their own WoD setting in the recent re-write of their mythology. So I really question the logic as to why a very succesful and focused company ( ccp - eve ) would merge with a near-bankrupt business with a proven complete lack of interest by pc gamers and who are stupid enough to alienate what was left of their fanbase with silly updates to their gaming world that end up destroying what it was all about in the first place, namely the Masquerade !

firstly WoD is the best table top role-play game out there. secondly it is so not emo... well the vampires sometimes are but they can't help it :P not sure how they could pull off mage in an mmo though, it's the free form spells that make it so great and that just wont work in a mmo. warewolf would be the best game for them to take from as an mmo imo.... pvp territory battles anyone.

As long as there are no antedelluvians in space, no jovian technocrats or minmatar Garou I'll be A OK. I don't want white wolf content in eve. If they make a WOD MMO, I'll shell out some cash for it, as long as ccp can make it half as good as eve (which makes the theorhetical WOD game twice as good as WOW)

The bankrupcy thing has me worried but a WOD MMO made by CCP sounds good. I guess it depends how much WW will influence the games design, they probably expect a WoW-clone that all their offline pen and paper fans can enjoy without complex PvP et cetera.

Yeah, I understand the concerns. As long as CCP makes money on EVE, I think its a safe bet theyll continue to support it. But if this recently announced WoD MMO flops, that could mean the end of CCP (weve seen it before; White Wolf seems to be cursed when it coes to electronic games, as all the companies who put out games for them seem to bite the dust shortly after..).

Hi,
I think this might actually be a winner for CCP. It's not as if they can't just double the company size while developing a second game and it makes the overall CCP brand alot more secure from the dreaded external takeover.
White Wolfs worlds and source books are some of the best out there in the roleplaying community.
CCP while making this game will have all the art work, characters, skill system, developmental tree, historys, background, etc etc already there and just waiting a bit of balance when they have all the graphic's, gameplay stuff sorted.
Saves doing it all from scratch....
Plus they got a massive White Wolf fan base of Emo's, roleplayers and fit goth chicks to tap into.
Also its not a bloody elf hack and slash WoW clone thank bloody gods.

White Wolf themselves have little to do with computer games. They are mostly into tabletop roleplaying, card games and books.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption was the first game by Nihilistic Software, some ex-LucasArts guys mostly. They have some trouble producing good games.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines was the third game of Troika Games, founded by Fallout developers. All of their three games (Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil and Bloodlines) were extremely buggy.
So it's not like White Wolf is cursed. They just have lousy companies asking to use their roleplayig world. Hopefully, CCP will make something good out of it.

Ayieeeh! Yes, those recent additions kinda felt like the devs not having much interest in continuing that world.
I really like the background, but I do not think that WoD would make a good MMORPG at all. Most of the setting lived from the player being part of an absolute -though powerful- minority in the world, normally trying to stay hidden. Part of my fascination came from trying to reach your goals without waking up the shee*cough* normal humans all over the place. Not everyone can be a vampire hunter, wereanimal, changeling, ghoul or vampire. Having the AI do 99% of the beings all over probably isn't possible - and a DDO-style MMOG just sucks. It is all about intrigues ... AI design currently isn't able to build an intelligent and interesting mission setup on the fly. --*=*=*--

Exactly. White Wolf is a fantastic company, you could say it's the CCP of the pen&paper rpg world -- except that CCP is a young company, while WW is near-legendary and has been around for ages.
White Wolf has pretty much nothing to do with the Vampire computer games that seem to be the only things you guys recognize, those were just licensed products. What the actually do is brilliant rpg stuff, and (imho) the best CCG out there (Vampire: the Eternal Struggle).
At the moment a lot of people are understandably nervous, especially on the White Wolf fan side. Handled wrong, this move could potentially kill off White Wolf as we know it and turn it into a EVE support material subsidiary. Which would royally suck.
I like EVE, I like White Wolf games. Honestly, I'd much rather see CCP go away than I would see White Wolf, if it came to that. CCP is a good company and EVE is nice and all, but compared to WW's games there's just no contest.
I hope things work out. I have to say I don't see too many good things in this, and see a lot of potential problems. As long as CCP keeps their hands off WW's games, I'll be ok with it.
The people here going "I've never heard of White Wolf" are a bit amusing, since there are a *lot* more people on the rpg player side at the moment going "what the hell is CCP or Eve, never heard of them. WarCraft in space? No thanks".
White Wolf has been around for, what, 20 years or so now? CCP has been around for quite a bit less, and has a track record so far with just one game. Yes, it's a great game, but still.
I'll try to be optimistic here, but I can't help worrying.

I doubt there will be antedelluvians anywhere as they're not in requiem and any game made would probibly be based on new world of darkness... which is good cos the new stuff is much better imo.

Umm, what? The new Vampire is simply better than the old one on pretty much any standard you care to name. Ok, granted, it doesn't cater to the trenchcoats and katanas crowd and has less silly superpower stuff -- if that was your thing then you lose I guess. But pretty much everyone agrees that it's a much, much better game than the old one.
The new Werewolf is probably the best new game they have out at the moment, it rocks and is quite different from the old "aaaargh, kill for Gaia!" Werewolf.
The new Mage is the only game that's worse than the old one, imho. I just doesn't grab me that much, but there are lots of good ideas there.
Then there's Promethean, which rocks, and a new version of Changeling is in the works.
Fair enough, maybe you don't like the new WoD. But you're in a small minority there, most people I know and most people on rpg.net and on WW's forums love it (bar Mage, which has problems).

CCP were very emphatic that Eve is their number 1 product but with an aim to increase headcount (they said triple!) they can resource to other projects in the future. White wolf is taking over all the intellectul property side of eve to allow CCP to focus on game development. Eve is a dark evil place which should fit in well with WW's background to make a vampire-squid-spider-puppy.

This, I'm afraid, is purely down to personal opinion. It's not objecrively better, it's only better to some people. As it happens I know more people who dislike the new games and prefer the old ones but that's probably just my local demographic. There are many improved features in the new systems, as well as many steps backwards in creativity.
I'm taking the tack of agreeing to disagree with people because trying to get them to change their minds on these things is fruitless and akin to trying to pursuade someone to swap political party affiliations
