I've played WoW for two years now, and EVE for a bit over 1 year. Based on that experience, here are some of my impressions:
In terms of PvE, WoW is far and away better. It's not even really a fair comparison. WoW has literally hundreds of hours of PvE content and a cooperative end-game that leaves EVE's PvE in the dust.
PvP in WoW is fun... for a while. The problem is that it never goes anywhere -- the world is perfectly static. It's truly ironic that in "World" of Warcraft, the vast (vaaaast) majority of PvP occurs in instanced battlegrounds that have no effect on anyone except the people in them at that exact moment.
PvP in EVE is a phenomenally higher-stakes game. I read the WOW forums a lot and see the PvPers calling people who don't PvP carebears, and I just laugh. In WoW, if you die you respawn 25 seconds later with all your health, mana and equipment. There's no loss whatsoever, except for whatever spells you may have had on when you died. PvP in WoW has utterly no consequences.
So that's my three-paragraph summary of the difference between WoW and EVE. WoW has awesome PvE and mediocre PvP, while EVE has awesome PvP and non-existant PvE.
HOWEVER! The user interface in WoW is approximately 1,000 times better than in EVE. Not only is it far more well designed (in WoW, you actually use the keyboard to play, instead of just the left mouse button!), but it's almost 100% customizable as well. The UI in EvE is so clumsy and primative I just want to scream when I use it -- it feels like I'm trying to fly a starship by looking out the window and yelling at the computer, "I see a planet! Warp to it!"
Example: Despite the fact that my starship is capable of travelling lightyears through space and engaging in combat with targets hundreds of kilometers away, my HUD is unable to display the fact that I'm being warp scrambled. I don't know that I'm scrambled until I actually try to jump, but by that point the knowledge is a bit tardy.
A customizable, mod-able interface is on the top of my wish-list for EVE. It's something they ought to emulate from WoW.
