I was looking through the map last night, and noticed a lot of individual systems that aren't "claimed", in regions held largely by the big alliances.
For instance in the north, there are parts of Deklein etc that aren't showing as sov for Freelancer or IRON etc.
Is this because there is no benefit in putting a POS in those systems, due to poor moons?
Or are there other reasons why?

npc corps own some of those systems as well. Good luck trying to get sov there without the permission of the inhabiting alliances :)

Yup, if the systems don't contain anything interesting then theres no point in spending money on putting a POS there, claiming random systems provides no benefit. -----

I imagine to some extent it is based on economics. As more people get the ISK and SPs to run a POS those areas will fill out.

Some of this systems might have poses, but people don't set those to claim sovereignty to not appear on the map.
The only real reason I can think of to set a pos to claim sovereignty in a system without a station is that you want to get a mail, when someone else anchors a pos there.

well, on the flipside of not setting soveriegnty to stealth it on the main map, the advantage to having Sov in 0.0 is that your get a 30% reduction in POS fuel requirements.

Just because no-one saw fit to plant a flag on the hill doesn't mean you will reach the top alive.
In a lot of cases, it could well be that the systems in question are too far from a station for the supply route to be convenient, have only a couple of belts, rubbish ore, and/or useless moons. Not all 0.0 rewards you for the risk.
