I apologize that probably none of you have heard of me, but I generally stay out of the spotlight for....various reasons. I have been doing my own research into these macros for some time now. I have come to some interesting conclusions, which are as follows:
- This seems to be confined mostly to the systems controlled by Concord and the Four Empires.
- The reason why pod pilots do not respond to communications is because the macro implant is slaved into its own FTL network, separate from what we use in our ships. This means the "ghost network" has its own encryption, which has failed the best efforts of myself to decode. Once decoded, we should be able to, in theory, trace the signal back to its source.
- The implants work on a sort of hierarchical system. That is, there is almost a sort of command structure to the network itself, with those that wind up being miners the "low" end; any pilots that might be slaved to pick up duties seem to be "higher" ranking in the network.
- They are dumb. Once slaved to the network, it appears that they lose all possible intelligence save for what is needed for the job they are assigned. Like our drones that are only capable of following one order at a time, the slaved do not deviate from their current orders. This means no adaptation, no free form of thought, not even to defending themselves from attack. This is why they must operate in high security systems with a heavy Concord presence.
- The most likely point of entry for the implant is usually in those pod pilots fresh from flight training. For some reason, most of the veterans don't seem to acquire these implants, but it still happens on occasion with no pattern in sight. The infections are completely random.
- From study of the few implants I have managed to recover from corpses of the infected, I have found it near impossible to discern the origin of this technology. It certainly is nothing that I or my colleagues are familiar with. Although judging from a few telltales of the nature of the tech, I can speculate that I think it might be the work oooooffffffffffffff.........
