What a wonderful idea Tarnish! Cause I mean here I go and pay this monthly fee to play EVE. Yet for at least 8 hours out of every day I'm required to go to this thing called a 'job'. Yet due to this I cannot play EVE! The network filters block all the ports :(
This is horrifically unjust! Therefore I demand that CPP create some way for me to connect from work that does not require the use of the internet! I propose they specifically just for me (And all of those other poor folk who dont want to/cant use the internet to play EVE) is to create some sort of high tech omnidirectional reciever/transmitter device, and send every player of EVE a reciever/transmitter so that we could play EVE where ever we go, without the necessity of using the all too often overcrowded and overloaded internet!
Immagine it! You could play EVE while on the bus, while on an aircraft, or even while hanging out in the international space station! The internet has alas proven itself to be far too limited! And obviously as I am a paying customer to CPP with a subscrition to EVE CPP should bow to my every whim and demand!
THE REVOLUTION IS NOW!
Join with me brothers and sisters and let us force CPP to create this mystical means of playing EVE without having to debase ourselves into requiring the diabolical and dehumanizing entity known as the internet!

Bah! Eve is greater than Freelancer. Not that I found it that bad of a game tbh.
In any case as I said, I want EVE! Not Freelancer (Because I'm now addicted to EVE)

CCP - Why cant you make it so that you can also connect to Eve through the "Standard" HTTP port(s). As every company will have these unblocked, other wise the net is useless to them.

What you need to go around EVERY Firewall from inside the network is: A Proxy Software, Yourfreedom, and rerouting the ports.
I'll have a look for the detailed description, but it's really not hard to play from work.
What is hard if you do so is to keep your job however.

Probably because CCP's web servers are at the same location, in the same building as the main servers, and thus they're already using port 80 (HTTP) for their website.

Yeah, it would work if they had a separate connection for web servers and game servers (which wouldn't be surprising).
To test that, ping myeve.eve-online.com, www.eve-online.com, and the game servers' IP address, and see if any of the IPs match up.

Well both "myeve.eve-online.com" and "eve-online.com" have the same IP of "87.237.39.200". Not sure on what the game server is running, any ideas on where I could find it? It's not malicious as it is... it opens a tunnel however that "could" be used by others.
What you are doing looks like that:
Eve.exe --> IP X and Port 26000 --> Proxy rerouting it to Yourfreedom --> Yourfreedom conecting to outside Server (provided by yourfreedom) over port 80 --> Outside server rerouting to port 26000 and EVE IP --> connection to EVE. The same the other way round.
Thus you communicate over port 80 and no firewall will block it(allmost none, ok).
I didnt find the detailed description in the forums anymore and dont have my works laptop here to check, but here is a link that gives some info:

Ah man what was ment as abit of a joke posting has apparently turned into a serious dicussion. Woe is me :D
However I belive what was ment about it being hard to keep your job should you play EVE from work is that generally speaking workplace usage rules for computers states that their for buisiness use only (Which playing EVE most certainly is not)
In my case it technically isnt an issue as it's actually allowed (Given that my job does not actually entail very much beyond montering servers, running various queues, swaping out backup media etc, i've got an entire 4hr time span at work where I litterlaly have nothing to do)

Hehe, well, I've been trying to find a way to play Eve at work for the last 2 years, havent found a way yet. But when I heard about this Web-Browser port connect, I tryed it out on some other programs, like IRC and things like that.
Now that you brought it up, I thought I would give my input on the matter, as I know a lot of people out there would love to be able to play eve at work. Plus I have my own laptop which I plan to play it on, not the work computers, I'll just leach the internet from them.
Might be somthing worth looking into CCP, you never know. Emm?"Cant touch this" den der der dum, der dum der dum KILLING THE BUG'S, BEFORE THEY KILL YOU Un-nerfing you sig is bad mmmmkay - Xorus RAWRRR!111 - Immy-Poos

Most proxys automatically download a set of rules for **** and game sites so it would probably be blocked if there was another way. Also as an admin I check the stats every month and ban the top 5 sites that aren't work related.
I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game three years' when I know their account has been sold on.

Is there a risk of getting caught using one of the tunnels remotely, or will you only be sussed if you get caught with it on the screen?

Aye, and I'm not supprised this is a problem for me given the work setting I'm currently in. I'm merely dissapointed to be honest. Especially as it's caused a few recent setbacks with my startup corp now that I'm not around at the same times I used to be. (Though steps have been taken to correct this as I've got an equal investment partner who covers the timezone period I used to be on often, who also happens to share very similar goals)
Certainly if I could find some way to connect to EVE from work I'd do it durring that 4hr timespan just to help keep up momentum and get even more stuff done. Not to mention it would technically be more productive than my current trolling of the forums :D

Actually....
An offline option would be nice, alot of people go on sis just to test fittings, the offline option would be just 1 station/system with every module for free on it, also maybe allow other players to connect to your eve client so you can test your setups vs someone

That would probably require a client-side version of the server software. This would be very bad because the server is written in python, so leaking it even in a limited form would open up the possibility of free "private servers."

Edited by: Ma''Kahn on 15/11/2006 11:49:27 They could also store a working client of the game on a tiny computerchip and then ship that together with an air-pressure gun so that you can basically shoot the game into your brain through your nose. Simply saying "Eve" would then totally replace your visuals with the game. And the kicker: your boss wouldn't notice a **** thing as long you maintain that zombie-ish "i am working or at least pretending to " look on your face.
The eve-store would explode with orders.

Think I saw somewhere CCP developing some system to play eve via Smartphone.
Interestingly I can see at the company I work for (BT) what the people managing the filters are playing. The website of Eve-online is blocked, but the pages for World of Warcraft are not.

finaly one with ambitions. If they could make EVE like a vaccine, so everyone got it, they just had to activate it, then it would be even better!

I have created a monster! Pandoras box has been unleashed! Noes!
Though I am sorta glad to see these sorts of thigns brought up, and as for WiFi. I may not have to wait for even that. It seems the local phone company (Which also runs an internet service) has bought into the tech that if I recall correctly orrigionates from Japan (Ahh, those crazy Japanese, you gotta love em). Basically you can get an internet connection over a standard household power plug.
They've recently begun a massive advertisemnt blitz about it 'Simpatico Unplugged' basically flat out saying you can plug in say.. your laptop anywhere and connect to their net service. It's something I'd have to look into further I suppose, and if it's a viable option, well then I supose it's time i get my laptop fixed and see if they'll let me take it to work

But just to state it again the op was purely made because of the quote that goes along with it. It was in no way ment to be serious what so ever. It has however spawned a supprisingly serious discussion about ways to connect to EVE from locations other than home.
And hey, if it helps me find a viable solution to being unable to play EVE from work I'm all for it, because honestly. My job is boring me to tears, and playing games from work for me at least is infact quite allowable according to my boss, who happens to be the regional director to boot
