I swear, there's some automatic machine that posts a new "When will EVE die?" or "When will EVE 2: The Reckoning come out?" every week.
The answer is always the same. It'll die when people stop playing, and the cause of death is most likely not going to be an EVE 2 dividing the fan base (EVE will always evolve, there's no need for a second.).

QFT. I'm an E&B refugee as well. It's the only MMORPG i have seen come by that was actually discontinued by its publisher. Heck! Even Horizons is still around! (but i am not sure about Shadowbane. Maybe that one is dead too).
What is all this talk about SWG being dead? I don't remember seeing SOE pull the plug on the operation. Of course, that might be my definition of dead = servers shut down with no way to play the game anymore. A game with such horrible features it has only a single server with a hand full of people on it isn't dead, just terminally ill .

We've mentioned this a number of times, I don't know why this keeps on being mentioned. There is no EVE 2, just EVE.

good thing that'll never happen
It wont kill Eve, it just risks killing eve for all the people specialising in that part of the game (probably not more than 30k or so). Im worried that the only thing i love doing might be impossible soon. But im sure it will enhance the gaming experience of others.

10 years huh, thats a lot of **** skill points. Clones are going to be insanely priced.
I imagine all the content being thrown in with Kali this month and the upcoming ones could be "eve 2".

The difference between EVE and most other mmorgps is that in others they scrap the old one after a while and then start a new (or run the parallel). In EVE on the other had they keep upgrading it gradually until it for all intent and purpose becomes EVE 2.

Sometimes when developing things, its easier to start off fresh and build from scratch though. But when its something as complex as Eve, I doubt it would make things easier.

Let's go off on a small tangent for a moment.
EverQuest is considered the first MMO to popularize the genre. True, there were MUDs before, and Ultima Online, but EverQuest was the first MMO to truly bring the genre out into the open. EverQuest began in 1999, or something like that. Now, people have been saying that EverQuest will die for many, many years. "DAoC will kill EQ!" "WoW will kill EQ!" "EQ2 will kill EQ!" etc etc etc...
Yet for some reason, SoE still continues to crank out expansions for the game, which implies that people still buy them. EQ will be going on 8 years soon, and it's still alive. I expect EVE to live just as long.
However, EVE doesn't have the same number of players that EQ did in it's prime (I think 600k subscribers?), but on the other hand, EVE really doesn't have any competition - being the only Sci-fi, space sim MMO. Plus the open ended content that EVE provides is hard to find anywhere else.
In conclusion, EVE will not die unless:
a) EVE loses it's player base
and
b) EVE gains competition, and fails to provide new content.

What would happen if the DB server and all the backups was destroyed somehow? Total wipe of all chars and items...
Would you still play?
And to stay on topic, I don't think EVE will go away anytime soon, these fellas seem to be sharp and makes good choices so EVE will be around for a long time!

If and when they do something stupid like Star Wars did, and change the game mechanics so that anyone with more than a brain cell decides to quit playing.
Although I hear people complaining here, I get the impression from sheer numbers logged on that they are being pretty careful about ganking their own game mechanics to the point where people leave en masse.

I predict eve will start to die after Kali. Too many bad design changes and the Dev's no longer seem to listen to their player base. CCP is starting to act the same way SOE did.

Why must we talk about such sad, sad things? You realize you're wasting precious ISK making time speaking such blasphemous things. Not to mention why not try ENJOYING the game by PLAYING it instead of discussing how and when its going to die? Just seems kinda odd to me

EVE is successful because CCP does NOT listen to the MINORITY of their player base. Kali has only one bad change to it and that's the HP increase. It has good merit to it and I have faith CCP will eventually fix the problems surrounding it.
It also has warp to zero, so at least two bad changes.

Ok EVE will be around for a LONG time. Theres really only one thing that will shorten this span, and that is competition. Quite frankly im suprised there is not many if any space MMOs. The only competition EVE ever had was Earth and Beyond (which is my favorite mmo of all time). To this day it baffles me as to why those stupid dumbasses at EA decided to close it down. There are SO many MMOs still running that just dont make sense they are around, yet EnB gets hacked.
After EnB sunset, EVE got a wave of new players from EnB, because quite frankly, there was NOTHING in the space MMO to go to from EnB. So basically thats that, in that time, now 2 years, there is still NOTHING to compete with EVE, and so of course as of now there is no way anything can slow it down in that genre.
Star Trek Online is the only other Space MMO in production that seems it might put some competition to EVE, but thats about it. So i think its safe to say, EVE, is in good shape.

I would realistically estimate at least 15-25 years.
The sort of game EVE is means that it continually evolves, rather than get's replaced by a less popular sequal (see: EQ2, etc).
So yeah, expect EVE to be around for a long time... And to get a lot bigger. -------- It's great being Amarr, aint it?
