I played alot of mmorpgs. And I noticed that alot of once p2p mmorpgs are now going premium accounts with F2p accounts as well... some great mmorpgs that went f2p are, champions, age of conan, lotro, ddo, city of heroes, and everquest 2 just to name a few. Only the big names like WoW has been able to keep a subscription base over the past years. Would Eve online work as a f2p game with premium accounts?
I was thinking about this while I was grinding away at work. How it would actually work. Well for one I think that it could work by first of all lowering the ability of the f2p user. Making the f2p user still be able to enjoy the game but limit what he can do. some things i thought of is
1. Decrease their training speed time. Make it double or something of what a premium account has. 2. Limit what ships they can use. Example make it where they cant learn to fly carriers or some other t2 ships like hulk.
Eve population i would say is steady. Its not really decreasing but not growing either. I know alot of people that want to try EvE online but always ask me is it free. I say only for 3 weeks on trial then they are like never mind. I believe this idea could bring in tons of new players. Some will still leave the game but im sure some will stay and more than likely upgrade thier account to premium. One new game that just turned F2p was lineage 2. i never played the game before but when it was free i tried it out to see what i been missing over the years. Granted i uninstalled shortly after 2 hours of gameplay. The game just wasnt for me no harm no foul..but since its free if i ever want to give it another go i can.
I dont know if Eve could pull off the f2p with premium account type of mmorpg. Maybe CCP shot itself in the foot with the whole time equal skill type of leveling. Feel free to comment to possibly come up with an idea on how to make it work or reason why it could never work. |

Never going to happen. Their income would drop and they'll be forced to start selling items and ships for money (like all the other free to play mmo's.)
Point of fact, if your proposal was ever made real, I will have one paid account and around 50 free alt accounts for research and trade purposes instead of 3-5 paid alts. Need Researched BPO's? Honestly, don't look at it as 'How can the f2p people get screwed', but as how can the paying people get more than the non-paying people. Don't take things away from current players who are only unsubbed due to isk, make it so that people who can pay get double training speed or other perks.
But honestly, it is a pretty stupid idea monetraily from CCP's pov |

free to play just simply doesn't work, not only is it a scam type business model frankly it ruins the balance of gameplay if EVE went free to play all that would happen is the losers who spent the most money would win, not the most tactically apt, not the most clever and not the ones who understood the game mechanics the most.
It's getting to the point now where we even have DLCs in standard MULTIPLAYER games being sold that offer you overpowered items and it sickens me but they even have the balls to try and sell you crappy blood animations etc. as seen in Shogun 2. This is an insult to gaming and if CCP want EVE Online to not just survive but to flourish they should never ever go down this route.
The only time I think it is only slightly reasonable to have DLCs and items for sale is in singleplayer games, but even then not only do a lot of the DLCs and items make very little sense to the game after you've bought it, but they also tend to have nothing to do with the game itself or add on to the price of the game when you have already paid for the full thing.
People who want a game to play do not play Free to play games or use DLC content. |

Have to dissagree with the premise that goign F2P would make less money for CCP, i know many people who play LotRO, AoC and DCU on F2P simply because there are so many F2P mmo's now that they can't justify paying a monthly subscription, yet in the end it works out they actually pay more monthly because they buy bits and pieces from the game stores throughout the month.
That is the trend with F2P MmO's at the moment, peopel think they're saving money but they're infact being coerced into paying more by offering content at what appears to be low prices when infact over time it costs more. |

The community would go berserk. Trust me. The economy that is the heart of EVE would become pointless.
And why would we want "tons of new players"?
EVE is a different game that needs time and dedication from its players to properly function These "tons of new players" you talk about are just a bunch of kids with an attention span less than a youtube video. What would they add to EVE?

I'm not advocating EVE going F2P, but this last statement although in one context is correct (P2W is unfair) in the general context of F2P is out of that context. Using and old internet meme ..
F2P=/=P2W
Free to play is completely different to Pay to win. If a F2P MmO is done preoperly there is nothing you can buy that will give you an advantage over others.
Take LotRO for example, there are no items (at least there wasn't any when i was playing) in the store that can give you a significant advantage over other players, there were minor stat enhancements and xp increases but they were very cheap, very limited and alternatives could be achieved by doing content in the game. The rest was all fluf like different styles of mounts and various wardrobe items.

We already have "fluff" for $$ in EVE. And there is NO way they could make EVE F2P without P2W and still rake in 350k*$15.
Don't even think about it. It is stupid.

lol@ people saying no.
EVE is already F2P, it's just never been labeled as such.
F2P: Get a trial > grind up isk for plex > purchase and apply plex (making account a "paid" account") > always pay for account with plex.
Cash store: Buy GTC > Turn GTC into isk > buy what you want on the player run market.
for people who say it can't be done: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1253240&page=1#1

I know you mean well, but this is not correct.
Since it's creation EVE has shown steady growth. The only time this trend faltered was after the Incarna expansion for obvious reasons, and it appears to already be recovering from that.
This type of steady growth in a single game, especially over such a long period of time, is virtually unheard of in the gaming industry. To kill the enemy and break their toys!
It's not so much a mission statement,-áit's more like a family motto. |

Lol at your stupid.
But then again, what do you know about economy and how it works in EVE? I guess you would also be fine if there were only NPC buy/sell orders on the market so you could sell your loot and buy new ships/modules for your missions.
Edit: I might have misunderstood you and im sorry if i did. But there is a large difference between buying ISK with GTC on the market from players then from NPC buy/sell orders. The PLEX system is one brilliant move by CCP that actually works in the sandbox environment. |

Just because the market is player generated, doesn't make EVE any less free to play.
edit: I have _NEVER_ put real money into EVE.
However, many people I know have dumped hundreds of dollars into building big shiny ships for themselves to fly in. Even though those ships aren't purchased and created "out of thin air", the concept of injecting game currency into your wallet and making a purchase on a market makes the game F2P for the person making the transaction.

Having developers spending time purely trying to work out ways to get the free-loaders to pay money is not something I would want to see happen in EVE.
As soon as any sort of F2P comes into the equation of a games development then you can bet pay-2-win will be following right along with it.
Regardless of anything else EVE would get meta gamed into oblivion if F2P was added. It would pretty much destroy the game. Also ultimately losing CCP money and their reputation along with it.
Nex (Cash Shop)-á/ Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future. |

If so then why do almost none of the major F2P games (and i'm talking major games like aoc, dcu and lotro, not these little fly by night studios that produce manga style mmo's with F2P) have P2W items? |

To the person making the transaction, it's no less F2P than any other F2P game on the market.
I'm not arguing your point, however.

Totally Wrong.
There are lots of items which give you an in game advantage.
Also games that go F2P are games which are failing.. i.e Lotro / DDO / Star Trek Online etc
