NOT training any learning skills is STUPID. L1s in each "basic" one pays off in a matter of minutes (maybe a couple of hours at worst), L2s pays off in one or two days, L3s pay off even DURING a two-week trial subscription.
L4s basic depends a lot on what path you pick, and can take as little as a couple of weeks or even as long as a month or even a bit longer to pay off, but as a rule of thumb, if player is OUT of trial mode and paid for his first month, training most/all (charisma optional) up to L4 is "a must": you end up with more useful SP at the end of those 45+ days most of the time (if you don't miss training time, that is).
Now, the "advanced" learning skills are another can of worms. The hump is L5 basic, not some levels in advanced. THAT "bump" can take months to "pay off" for a "starter char". As a rule of thumb, advanced learnings are most useful for LOW starting attributes, and less useful for the higher ones... with mem/int being a bit more important because of influence in the other 3.
IF you get to L5 basic, it's again STUPID to NOT to go L3 advanced as SOON as you can afford to buy them (4.5 mil a piece), as the payoff is again in the "several days" timespan (that is, assuming you already HAVE L5 basic). Now, once you ARE at L3 advanced, the choice to get to L4 advanced depends on how badly you need other skills compared to how long your "must have skillplan" is. The payoff, again, is in the months range, but usually less than 6 months. And again, it depends on WHAT skills you pick. ___
So the ADVICE I always give out and most people SHOULD give would be this:
Get all 6 basic learning skills up to L2 as soon as possible.
Then get the most basic skills you need to "do your job" at the most basic level (ABSOLETE advice in Kali with 800k starting SP already "ready to go"). THEN, if you are a trial account that does not know if he'll keep playing or not, get L3 basic only ; otherwise get L4s basic.
After that, get the skills you need to do your job WELL ENOUGH to keep you going for about one month or so, then start getting ALL 5 *advanced* skills to L3 (mem5, adv mem3, int5, adv int 5, then the rest). When you're at L3 advanced learnings, re-concentrate on "useful skills" you think you need, and if/when you are satisfied (and plan to stick around for a few months at least), proceed to training L4 advanced.
MOST IMPORTANT: if you EVER feel the URGENT NEED for a certain (relatively short) skill, drop learning and get the one you need instead, then go back to learning.
And that about covers it. _____ -sig-
