Hi!
May be a stupid question, but I am just curious. What exactly are you doing during the downtime? Except of patching...
Guess some maintance, but what exactly? Deutsche Bruderschaft ÀÀÀ Logic Is The Faith Of The Future ÀÀÀ |

They do patching, maintnance and such, some changes can only be done during downtime. They probaly check a lot of things and so on.. ;)

I heard that they go to RaGe666's hanger and move all his stuff around. Then they put it all back and reboot. :P -----

@ Wrangler Yeah thought so... but what exactly? Deleting temp files? Force trainees cleaning up your database? Manually adding some roids? Repairing pirate ships? ;) Deutsche Bruderschaft ÀÀÀ Logic Is The Faith Of The Future ÀÀÀ |

Well, you might get lucky and some dev will see this and answer it :)

My humble guess:
1. Patching the server and client are seperate events. The server is patched more often than the client is (little fixes). This is the only time to apply those patches.
2. Backups. Storing a backup (to a permanent storage medium) is essential to sa***uard against disaster. They can also migrate the world files to the test server (like they did the other day).
3. Freeing stuck players. The server restart frees many players, and stuck players are a big problem.
4. Reboot the windows boxes. They can't really handle the load (nodes start dropping towards the end of the 24 hour period). This problem would have been listed as #1, but they have stated that they have a fix for the node crashes, so this may not be a problem much longer.
Once the games over-all stability and bugs are cleared I expect them to start moving towards weekly downtimes, so that they can apply patches with feature upgrades (rather than bug fixes).
Probably 2-3 months.
Again, this is all just me guessing, I have no inside knowledge on this.

Lol... personally it's my time for reading the boards; but since it seems many others do the same I find for first 15-30minutes the boards are impossibly slow.
Though for whatever reason it seems the dev blog works even when the in-game board doesnt.
I'd say the main thing in downtime as already suggested is the daily reboot of the servers.

While I'm sure the anti-Windows crowd will choose to ignore it, they also said that the node crashes were actually caused by a bug in Python. Nothing to do with the servers or their handling of the load... =)

While I am perfectly certain that exceeding the 32 bit limit for object counts contributed the the nodes crashing, I do not believe for a moment that is the only cause.
I had several node crashes today after they 'fixed' this bug.
Even microsoft doesn't use windows for thier high volume multi-user databases (hotmail).
But whatever, no amount of complaining will change the equipment they use. _____ m0o

Hmmm. I'm pretty sure they use Windows 2000 Datacenter for Hotmail nowadays.

From what I remember from beta (Could be wrong) part of the daily downtime routine was updating and altering the market so it fluctuates daily. Editing things like NPC prices in certain areas, and tweak the way the market works.
Most patches they apply would require a download from the clients to recognize large changes.
It's for small things like fixing typos, or tweaking the numbers on certain weapons/skills.
I could be wrong of course, but this is what I remember.

I think it's mostly for the servers/databases to "catch up" and to get general synchronization that can be hard to achieve if the system is under load 24/7.
