I was reading the sticky post on ship setups. Often I saw people saying things like named AB, or named missle launcher, you get the idea. But in my experience, the only difference in a named module and the generic is the price or sometimes a very very small difference in CPU or power usage (I mean like 1 or 2 units).
Specifically because it's where I first noticed this was with PDUs. I bought the Power Diagnostic Unit I for very cheap. There were several others on the market with the same stats for much much greater price. In fact, the generic PDU was just as good as the best named unit (again except for CPU usage of 1 or 2 difference). The only PDU I saw that was better then the generic was one called a Power Diagnostic Unit II. :P
Anyways, whats the difference between named and generic?

Well, look at the difference in rof and damage mod on a named gun compared to a basic one.

In the case of weapons, the best named (Arbalest in the case of missiles), will have the same stats as the T2 version, but unable to use the tech II ammo. In the case of modules, let's take a stasis web for example. The T1 has a 65% speed reduction if I recall correctly, whereas a Fleeting Propulsion inhibitor has 90%.
Now, you mention how they might have minimal cpu/power differences. Surprisingly, I cannot tell you the amount of times where I've been .5 cpu or power short of getting my ship all online, so yes, it is worth that extra to get a named module sometimes.
Hope this helps. _________________________________________

hehehe, i have .15 grid left to spare on my ishkur without named mods i would have never fitted it. To the OP, take a look at deadspace, faction and officer modules on escrow, there even better than the named modules available on the market, however as stated above turrets and missle launchers cant use the T2 ammo.

Also, There are a lot of Named items that are often times better then the Tech 2 version. Using the Status Webifier as an example again, the best named not only gives you far better results then the Tech 2 it also uses less grid and cpu.
To your comment about the PDU, the best named is almost as good as the Tech 2, so people who donÆt have the skill set to use the tech 2 yet, will often use the Best named until they can.
The best named Damage Control Unit: Internal Force Field Array I is the best in the game since the Tech 2 version isnÆt seeded yet. Due to the lack on the market you will not find them for cheap, and the next best is far cheaper. The difference from the best and the second best is only a couple of percent across the board but it can mean the difference of having resists in the high 70Æs or the low 80Æs.
One mod where I notice a huge difference between fractional increases is the BCUÆs. The difference between a Ballistic Control Unit I and a Pandemonium BCU may only be a few % but that can mean the difference between 80 DPS and 100 DPS or more. When you look at Faction BCUÆs such as the Dread Guristas BCU, the difference is again only a few percent over the best named, but that can mean an extra 30 DPS.
High Skill Point Player EVE is all about how much of an edge you can get over someone who may have Level 5 in all the same skills as you have Level 5, thatÆs when 1% in ROF or .5 CPU really come into play.

The fitting advantage is actually more important than you think. Many times I come up with a setup that doesn't fit by <10 CPU. If I fit all named modules then it does. If you've got enough fitting leftover where you can honestly say a bunch of named modules are useless, that indicates to me your setup isn't that great. I judge a setup by whether or not I have to fit named tackle gear for the CPU, that tells me I've done a good job getting the most from my ship. The moderators here are excellent at policing signatures. |
