Im wondering why the new gang skills for squads and wings are rank 8 and rank 16 skills...the new gang system is a big improvement, but why did you have to put in a enormous time sink?

Two reasons spring to mind:
First a sick joke on us that made accounts with the lowest of the low Charisma or With the bug kill on account learning when not active, so we all make new accounts with ultra high Charisma as FC's

Maybe its to get really dedicated fleet commanders.
At least the ones who have managed to train the skills to a high level will be very attractive for some corporations.

Glad I have a pretty balanced character then... I always figured it was dangerous to maximize 4 attributes, because ccp was bound to want all 5 attributes to be very useful.
Charisma is still way beyond the others even with this change, but maybe they will slowly make it more and more useful. :)

I agree that the ranks are ridiculous though.

I am now glad I have high charisma. I have 22 Charisma lol

As for the time required to train. They don't want to see the maximum sized fleets. They don't want blobs to be as common as they are now.
To have the current largest groups there will have to be multiple fleets operating.

Actually, the description on SiSi says:
Fleet Command: "Allows command of a Fleet. Grants the Fleet Commander the ability to command a new Wing per skill level, up to a maximum of 5 Wings.
Wing Command: "Allows command of a Wing. Grants the Wing Commander the ability to operate a new Squadron per skill level, up to a maximum of 5 Squadrons."
So I think you will need to train those skills just to be able to create squads or wings. But yeah, you only get bonuses while in squads or wings, so you are right too. :)

It's to really annoy the munckins to started with charisma 3.
Although personally I reckon having a level 5 as a pre-req is just a bad move in general.

Well, I think Kelgen Thann is right actually. CCP dont want big blobs of people and neither do we, because it only creates huge lag and a bad playing experience. So by having 50 vs 50 fights with gang bonuses instead of 75x75 without gang bonuses should mean about the same thing... more damage/defense with the bonuses without the extra number of people.

You only need it at 5 if you feel the need to have 5 wings of people under your command though. Its really only taking it from 4 to 5 that is painful... rank 16 with charisma as primary, that should be several months...
Then again, its a considerable advantage if you actually do it, compared to the ones who dont. 5 wings with bonuses against 4 wings with bonuses...

Yeah, you're right, maybe people will split up in smaller gangs. Its a shame that its not more efficient to divide the firepower than to focus it all in one place.

With good learning skills and implants you're looking at about 90 days orso. While its a lot of time to spend on a single skill level, I suppose CCP want to make sure that dedicated fleet commanders are battle hardened veterans who have every other imaginable skill maxed out.

Bugger the gangs and blobs and stuff 6 months to train 2 skills to be able to do somthing I can do now with no skills sucks. I trained gang skills to help my friends not spend more time traing skills so i can help less people. Hell in the time it takes to train these I could be Titan ready?

It's not like every player needs these skills at level 5. In addition then at least one out of 50 vets had no idea what they were doing in the beginning and started out with extremely high charisma. That dude is now a bit more useful than he was before.
A good move and long overdue in fact.
