my opinions on salvaging, admittedly having only salvaged one mission (Level 4 "Vengeance")
1. It slows down loot collection in three separate ways
a. you have to sacrifice a tractor slot for a salvager b. All ships drop wrecks, but not all contain old fashioned "loot"...there is no way to see which ones are empty until you hav dragged them in to range and opened them c. the salvaging process itself is quite slow (I know, you are getting something in return, and skills will help)
I don't really have problems with a and c...but b is annoying...if you just want to loot and not salvage, you have to waste time dragging in a lot of wrecks which are empty. And then you get surrounded by them , so you have to fit SOMEHTING on your looter with offensive capability to blow the suckers up.
2. The rewards you get from it are...questionable. I know everyone gets a bee in their bonnet about "Risk vs Reward", but surely "TIME vs Reward" should be a factor as well...I spent 90 minutes looting & salvagin the whole mission...picked up salvage items that, at most woudl be worth 100,000 ISK.
3. Due to the times involved, I don't think it would be humanly possible to solo loot something like Guristas Extravaganza - wrecks in the last stage would have popped by the time you get there (if someone can confirm, that is, that wreck lifetims are the same as old loot cans lifetimes?). If this is CCP trying to encourage co-operation, I'm fine with that, but there is STILL no mechanism for true and fair reward sharing on missions (including loyalty points and rewards, and now, salvage items)
4. Salvaging in low sec with the new scanning abilities is CERTAINLY going to be a no-no.
5. Salvaging is very cap intensive...especially for those who use a destroyer with multiple tractors and slvagers ---
I don't mind you disagreeing with me. Just don't say I don't have the SKILLS to comment until you've looked at them. |

A: If you dont want to salvage. DONT. Just blow the wrecks up
B: If you DO want to salvage, bring a alt in an industrial or have a corp member salvage for you as you go. Thats what Im going for in my corp. Training up to salvage our lv4 missions

a) what I've always done - at least since I 'saw the light' was to bookmark a can and come back later in a dedicated fast loot ship. I now have a Cormorant for looting with a carge expander, 5 tractors and 3 salvager I's
b) there is a patch on the way to address the 'which wrecks have I checked?' issue - I believe a different icon (empty vs. filled triangle) will be used to mark looted containers. There are other changes on the way as well - including a reduction in the required skills (probably drop required Survey and Mech skill levels from 5 to 4 I guess)

Salvaging Cycle is way too long, it should be cut in half. I wished CCP would make salvaging ships, I mean, you need lots of highs and lots of cargo, and there is no ship out there really capable of both.
I would love to see a special ability to transport ships that gives you one extra high slot per level (on the non-bloackade runners). They have the cargo and cpu to be able to pull it.... Only things that could go on the extra high slots would be salvagers/TBs.
Meanwhile.... What I came up with for Salvaging ship: Armagedon High: 4 Tb 4 Salvagers Mids: Named 100 AB Cap Battery (named) Cap Recharger Lows: 4 x Cargo Expanders 4 x Nanos
Results: Almost 200 m/s base speed, 900+ m/s with AB Almost 1200 m3 cargo Fairly agile
Hope it helps

both of those kind of miss the point...blowing the wrecks up...well currently my destroyer fits all tractor beams...so now I have to fit a weapon...that slows me down.
And "bring a friend" is the answer we get all the time...Yes, instead of wasting ONE person's time for two hours, you can waste TWO people's time for ONE hour...forgive me for not really seeing the point. ---

I agree also. The missions now take longer and seem to be less profitable as far as loot goes. So bringing a friend along takes care of the time factor somewhat but makes the mission even less profitable. Also, some of us like me like to log in and go straight into a mission rather than trying to coordinate schedules with someone to tandem a mission with. It is rather disappointing for me because just recently I was seeing some very nice loot drops, for instance the day before the patch I picked up an Arby Cruise, Arby Siege, and Interior Forcefield (30mil) damage control from one Lvl4.

It's also important to note that with the way some of the missions have been changed and with the new missions, you can't have anyone else with you to salvage while you run the mission, lest they draw wave spawn aggro and get instapopped. CCP seems to be doing everything they can to slow down mission runners and punish people with friends or 2nd accounts that run missions with them, be it to loot or assist the main runner. =(
