Originally by: JamesTalon Cursed Level3, causing my ping to double from around 50ms in Chigago to London.... I should complain to them. Although, then again, I have rarely had connection problems.
yes, crossing the atlantic ocean should equal about 50ms. that sounds about right.
transcontinental? 100ms link end to end is just about as good as your gonna get. 80ms MAYBE on a good day.
of course, try telling that to a voip customer in india tryiing to get crisp clean calls to seattle!

Ok after using ping plotter (i have just been using "tracert") I noticed something.
The hop after the router which I previously posted changes to what seems to be 1 of 5 routers. 2 of which have a ping time 15-25ms higher than the rest. Could this be the cause of my troubles?

Somewhat on topic here, I've noticed in the last while that I too have had trouble connecting to EVE. Just eve. Anythign EVE actually. If it was an offical CPP webpage, or if it was EVE itself, I couldn connect. Had that problem for about 24hrs untill it finaly sorted itself out.
Now in this instance it's not the same network I'm sure since I could connect just fine to the EVE forums from work, just not at all from home for that 24hr period (And no. I'm NOT talking about the DT from Revelations)
I've found I occasionally run into this with EVE in general. I'll hop on vent, talk to some folk, they are able to get in and play just fine. But I cant. It isnt terribly frequent yet (like your case seems to be) but it sure gets annoying.
And to the guy that posted that pingtrace route link, thanks. I'm definately going to use that next time that happens to find out where the heck the problem actually is for me. Yay we finally have a forum: http://pantherspaw.freehostia.com/ |

while signifigant, its not insane and more than acceptable if its your equipment and a weaker point in your net. where i work we usually have ppl on and off our network inside 7-8 jumps and will guarentee a 68m/s across our network when on continent.
if your getting kicked AND it is in fact network related, either a link is being saturated (highly unlikely unless w/ a smaller company) or there is in fact packet loss (usually transport related). do an extended ping, or eternal ping and watch it. let it go for an hour or two then ctrl c stop it and see what ya got. if your loosing packets it will show, if your speed is unacceptable it will show
and use cmd line for pings and traces always. they are much more accurate than software tools. a " * * 7ms " can be your icmp traffic being dropped for something more important (and will not reflect as a packet loss on tracert) but the packet statistics on a other party program would read that hop as 66% loss. (thus the importance of confirming w/ an extended ping)

ok,now that you have started "backpeddling" from your original rant, I hope you sort it out ASAP glad you are open to suggestions
oh,and if/when you find that you were wrong please edit your first post (and title) reflecting the fact that CCP/L3 were innocent in all of this, because it seems like the forums are the "CCP bashing" grounds these days
Imagine if they were like other forums where no criticism of owners was allowed

How are you doing this? through a "run" dialog?
run "cmd" first and then enter the tarcert in cmd prompt. Haven't you people heard of DOS :P

That could mean that the hop you suspected first actually is half dead.
Level3 has tech people? Somehow I never got through to those. I always reached PR and marketing people telling me the problems in the Level3 network are clearly based in my own network, regardless of any proof sent in. My experience from doing network design and troubleshooting for bank houses, city administrations and small companies like GM doesn't support any claim about Level3 giving their techpeople access to the customers. The only time they jumped into action was when you told the marketing and PR toons that you will remove the contract within a week at their cost, signed by a lawyer.
Oveur stated something about the EVE cluster actually becoming multi-homed a couple of weeks ago when they did one of the hardware upgrades. As the hardware change took place in the meantime, what other backbones are linked to EVE now other than Level3? --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

Seriously I welcome any and all suggestions. The last thing I wanna do is quit EVE over a stupid reason such as this, especially after 2 and a half years.
It seems like this issues is related to how busy the network is. When I was getting dropped it was during the day, but all night tonight I didnt get dropped a single time, and I bet a million isk if i get on tomorrow during the day I will start getting dropped again like before.
If thats the case I will run a long ping on the server IP for several hours and post the results here. If there anything else I could do to help provide information as to zero in on this problem, please dont hesitate to suggest something.

first. make sure you do all your testing through a command prompt.
second, if you have a device closer to your demarc (like a router) that has a command line interface, do your testing from there.
you shouldn't need several hours. just leave her run for like 30mins, see if you get any packet loss. you mentioned your traceroute, if your traceroute times go up AND THEN BACK DOWN, that is a protocol reporting to destination IP and not that hop time. you can confirm by pinging out to hop1 then 2 then 3 etc...
honestly, if you are getting disconnected at a layer 2 or layer 3 level its likely to be your own network/PC or your local ISP. This doesn't sound like anything caused by a large provider or CCP. Dont etch that in stone, but we talking 95% likely its not

Edited by: Herculite on 01/12/2006 22:37:10 I have this exact same issue, though I've never bothered with the trace route.
So far its never gotten me killed but its cost me a bit in drones and I know sooner or later it will be in pvp.
Sometimes its at least once a sesson, others I don't have a problem at all, but its only EvE that drops connection.
Edit: This thread reminds me of my early online gaming days with a modem. Call ISP, ISP says its your phone line, call phone company, phone company says its your modem, call modem company, modem company says its your ISP. (back then it was almost always the phone line as they were not designed for data)

but is it a network disconnect or same client issues everyone else is having?
there plenty of other threads for teh broken client (which you'll likely find me in too, i am borderline unplayable at this point)

I would say he should run the client logger to see what the hell is going on. That's why it's there. Make sure the disconnects are connection based, and not server/bug triggered.

Everything you need to know about the owners of that server is here:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=212.187.128.58
That includes company name, contact info etc. To answer you're question, yes after running a few handy utils (I work at an ISP) the link is having issues dealing with consitent burderns, I also some some randomness acts of nastyness of the course of 2 hours.
Anyways hope that link helps, if you manage to get in contact with them, they should be decent folk who can see if they cant work on the issue.
