watching at work on a t3, and have to watch low quality cause high (which i paid for) can't even buffer when fighting and the low quality has to buffer every 2 seconds...
any ideas about a fix or somethin? thanks
edit: was running perfect when they were talking before the fight on high quality. still cant get past 2 secs without a buffer ( on low )while they are commenting on the fight

Serious buffering problems on a 24mb line here.
Nothing in the studio but as soon as the match started, poof and still stuttering after the match.

personally I'd rather watch the legend of Zelda on the Phillips CDi
.... the buffering is horrendous, the quality is pathetic and the flash player sucks elephants through a straw

Like we said in the other thread it is just BS that you have to pay for a decent quality.
This small window is just so annoying. We pay enough already, let us have some high quality fun.

Theres not even a difference, from what i can see.
They use an expensive, very bad, beta piece of software, that is restricted to running in IE and firefox(And a few, that supports flash)

lots of buffering here too, the big problem is the sound drops too constantly due to the buffering and so it makes the commentary hard to listen to and it is hard to see what is going on as the quality is bad, all you can see is who has how many ships left!

I'm on a 50mbps line (communal network ftw) which is largely un-used this time of day, andI'm still getting a few seconds of buffer every 10 seconds or so. Even when it's working, the quality (on the free stream) is abysmal.

Lots of buffer problems and the rate of video quality/bandwidth is rather poor.
If you could provide a stream with the same bandwidth but a higher quality codec... without the flash thing, then I would be happy :) Actually, I would be *able* to watch it.
To use flash is a bad idea. Flash is Evil.

Yep buffering problems here to, especily on the high quality am haveing to watch it on low, as it just freses up when combat starts. it also keeps loosing conection to the server every so often.
has the odd problem with the sound distorting to but that seems to of cleard up now.

In the studio: Seems to be okay. With the obvious exception of the HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE method of delivery (i.e. the Flash).
Matches: Utterly unwatchable - terrible quality and buffering every couple of seconds. And the matches are sort of the whole point.
"If it ain't broke don't fix it" seems to apply.

On-topic.. I haven't seen a single minute of stream yet... how much for the non-crappy properly encoded DVD and when will you start shipping?

1MB+ (no idea what I'm actually connected to the public internet at) line here at a US university, and I've gotten no buffering since the beginning of the broadcast (when the stream has been up).
Edit: Okay... buffering issues caught up with me. Please for the love of god tweak the buffer-size serverside (unless there's some hidden Flash setting somewhere so I can do it here).

well the studio chat works fine (enough fps), but when the battle starts the video keeps buffering, like there's not enough bandwidth. I'm behind 4mbs downlink and it's clear so it's not my side..
please fix it soon

Yep The studios fine at least when it drops out and fails to conect to the server.
The fights though I've totaly given up useing high quality 90% of the match is just nothing while it buffers again and again.
I've moved over to useing low and its a bit better had it buffer 2 or 3 times once I switched over so saw some of the fight, but honestly if it keeps up like this over the hole torniment I think I'm going to give up watching and wate till theres a dvdof it.

Update: really cool match and again, buffering and now two drops 10 minutes in. -- Make that three drops in this match.

Not that its only crap quality and that you have to pay for a not working high quality stream, it also just prompted me to press a **** button to continue watching. This is just a farce really. I just had, for about 2 minutes, buffer-free play.
Then the server dropped me and I couldn't connect for a few minutes.
Now, the stream buffers, but all I get is audio. Video doesn't play.

Who on Earth decided to use this service for streaming eveTV, it is abysmal.

This years broadcast is a shame compared to last year if u take the bufferingproblems with audio and video.. :(
U can have the coolest studiodesign and guests, but if the broadcast is crap, then its all useless...

Im having MAJOR streaming issues. It keeps rebufferin like every second or two. This is nutts. I can watch 400k streams from my school or other video services - but EveTV is totally crapping out - WTF?

Bad quality (no, I won't pay for watching this, I pay for my EVE accounts). Stream freezes up. Have to watch in the browser.
I personally want to watch in a media player in a window next to EVE so I can play at the same time.
One more thing, bring back the sofas and table, the studio background is pretty cool but not that desk.
In the end, everything is grey...

Stream's stabilized a lot for me, I think they might have done something.
I bet they didn't start off with enough servers to handle a max capacity, just brought them up as they needed them. Makes sense, depending on how they're paying for the service or whatever.
It's only a few hours in anyway, I expect things will improve as we go forward. Go EVETV team!

Huge buffering issues for me here on the west coast of Canada. Poor decision to use Flash, and not havening a selectable stream link based on location. Was looking forward to watching the tourney again, but it is completely unwatchable now.

Simple, to control the content. Last champs had the stream RIPed and posted, reducing potential market for the DVD. This is probably meant to be trickier to grab in the same way.

PLEASE bring back the old stream. I even upgraded Flash and tried again, but it's still just as bad. I'm on a very decent and low-use connection at work, same as last time, and didn't have any stream issues at all last tourney.

I think this is a way for CCP to let everyone see what it's like to fly through Jita on a Sunday, now new and old players plus everyone who has never been there, can experience the lag, the black screen, the jittering view and the general ****tyness of Eve when more then 200 people try and do something..

Even the sound codec is failing on this jalipo crap...
Once the trailer part started the sound went totally haywire... as much as I know about sound and how it is encoded; the codec is unable to coherently handle high pitched sounds or it is the actual volume that breaks it.

now just change the codec etc back to the old one and throw that flash out of the window.

The low quality stream is more or less decent for me, infrequent buffering... Dunno why you would change the system that worked so well at the last tourny and the fan fest. Probably to make more money on DVD sales as this stream isn't rippable.

Also for the guy that said its working better in opera : dude, the flash player client its the same on all the browsers, unless yer using a linux/mac/bsd client, where the coding is a bit different in order to make it portable on those platforms ... so get a clue and stop bs-ing us
PS. is there anyway to increase buffer size ? cause I can't find any :/

Stream cleaned up for a bit, but went south at the beginning of the current battle. Completely unwatchable in Denver. I'll wait and download later.

For me the stream works fine when it's from Spiral and the experts, but as soon as they start showing the actual matches, it goes to crap.
I'm not sure what that means, maybe it's a problem on the filming side of things.

This is pathetic. The buffering is actually WORSE on the high version than the free one. Watching the IAC vs Red skull match, i couldnt watch anything on the high, so i switched to the low to not waste my "credits" and it was fine.
I don't know what the problem is, but it really sucks.

Why did you guys decide that an unknown Flash codec was a good choice? Until today, I'd never heard of Jalipo before. From this experience, I'd never recommend them to anyone. Certainly won't be paying for an HQ stream that's probably buffering even more. |

CCP, I understand that these technical problems may be out of your control, but you can make it better by providing a low quality torrent of the whole day, so that we can actually watch the fights. People will still pony up for the DVD as long as it's DVD quality video.

Why do the guys in studio even bother, its not like we can actually understand them with all buffering. Also i think it would be a lot cheaper if CCP just posted screenshots of fights. Its not so different from now and i would save a lot of bandwidth.

Bit of a shame. This event should have been great PR for Eve but it is quickly turning into a technical disaster. Some damage control, even if just in the form of some feedback, might be helpful.
I do really feel bad for the participants, commentators and the whole team -- so much effort wasted, they might as well just play without broadcasting and report the results somewhere on the forum.

I've had next to no problems on the low-quality stream for nearly the entire afternoon, no buffering problems at all.
My internet connection is hardly excellent, something very very odd is going on.

Xyliana I understand if some of the technical stuff may be hard to resolve, and beyond your control as EVETV director. Please make a recording of the low quality stream available after the fact. That will go a long way towards making this event a success, by allowing those who are otherwise missing out to watch.

The commentary is fine, maybe people stopped watching when the commentary went on, or that the streaming from the match is fubared.

Ive sorta figured out what it was, and its basically a regional thing where the current supplier sure does a good job to UK players but just isnt streaming to ALOT of other regions..... even with the High quality which I though would be better it was worst. Im canadian and it Blows.

Some are just getting lucky I think, or more people are giving up... I'm still sitting here listening to them all stutter worse then porky pig, watching the video and sound slowy desynch further and further, and trying to make sense of the slideshow after all my friends talked this up as being the event of the year not to miss <sighs>

This reminds me of when WoW rolled out. Blizzard wasn't prepared for the amount of poeple/players they were going to get even after their stress tests leading up to the release.
The last championships were so successful, how could anyone not be prepared for this? Eve has seen constant and sustained growth since then and they know how rabid we are about seeing these tournaments.
Jopia should have been clued in and if they couldn't handle it, denied even trying.

Yeah, the old streaming method would have bankrupted CCP in the long run, but these "Jalipo" idiots seem to be hopeless. I can't watch or listen to the feed.
I'd reccomend putting the Tournament on hold until a decent stream provider can be located.
Also, did the feed just go dead? Getting a blank screen.

Sadly, despite all the effort that has been put into this the results are utterly worthless.
I feel sorry for the guys who have worked so hard, and utterly bemused at the decision to change formats. Put it back to what it was for tommorow pls, or you may as well cancel it all.

The way I look at it, they have a week to get this better.
Everyone is gonna tune in for the Finals so I hope it's working then.
They need to fix the quality and sound before then or scrap it all together.

Actually it was. There wasn't a single match or commentary segment where I didn't have at least an annoying, important part missing, amount of buffering. Sometimes three to four complete disconnects in a row.
Now, sometimes the old stream was bad too, but then it was a-ok, because since it used a standard transmission method people were able to record and upload it rather quickly, meaning that I was able to go back and view the parts that were garbled.
More importantly I was able to go back and watch what I missed. While this tournament is on "at night" for Iceland, it's early morning and afternoon for USA players, meaning we were at work for today and alseep for part of it tomorrow and Sunday. Since people can't record this flash crap I'm going to completely miss parts of EVE TV. And since they only put matches on the DVDs, I'll totally miss the parts I didn't get to watch. That's way uncool.

While bandwidth is expencive, its not "that" expencive. For a broadcast such as this if you were hiring your own servers, you would expect to pay somthing like $0.40 to $0.60 per Gigabyte. Its expencive but its not that expencive.
**Please don't think for one second that I am critizing the EVETV people currently working on this. I know just how difficult it is to set up one of these events and I think they are doing a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances**

Smart people that stream live video, make use of a little something in the ip stack called multicast. Wikipedia is your friend.
Please read up on how stuff actually works, before you start throwing around huge numbers based on your own imagination.

question i have if i pay for the service rather than watching the free stream do i get a watchable stream?

Very true, However there are companies who specialise in renting large broadcast servers in "good" locations for just this kind of thing. For example on the first EVETV these were gaurenteed 700 mb/s broadcast servers. By the end of the event we useing a total of 8 of these servers sited in vairous locations around the world.
The price I qouoted was in the correct ballpark for the servers which were used on that event and other simmilar events I have worked on.
I would imagine there was a very simmilar setup for this EVETV, but based on the forum post by 4p's, it seems that Jalipo were let down by one of their suppliers. Its unfortunate when these things happen.
I do agree with you on the multicast issue however.

I had severe problems at all, with buffering, losing connection the stream, it was horrible and it was of no use to actually see how the other teams were doing. Sound and and video were never syncronized on my side and I stopped trying after the first half of the tournament where I was only able to see some screenshots of the fights instead of a video.

I tried to "tune-in" last night. Got to hear commentary from a fight, and see people in studio. Then I realized video stream was 2 minutes late, or something, since I could hear that Dominix was dying, yet fight (on video stream) just began.
Buffered every 5 seconds, on average. It was impossible to watch. Simple as that.
Closed EVE-TV and moved on with life, since I didn't want to waste a second more on that piece of crap.
CCP seemingly forgot first rule - KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid), and decided to go with some overbloated, undertested, completely disfunctional solution.

I understand that CCP wants/needs to make money, but after yesterdays debacle I'd rather they hike up the price of the monthly subscription by a bit and run events like this in-house and run them properly.
