This is to provide another possible fix to help those in which the previous fixes were not effective.
My system for a point of reference: Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 4 GB of RAM ATi X1950 XTX using the Catalyst 6.11 Creative Labs Soundblaster X-Fi Platnium, drives up to date Windows XP, up to date with all patches, releases, etc. DirectX is current.
Prior to Revelations, I have never had a single problem with Eve with the exception of the minor glitch here and there. No big deal. The first time that the servers came back on line, I made a run to corp HQ to acquire the new skills, check on the new ships, and then make a run back up to where we are operating out of. I noticed that once I hit empire space, the CTD's started up. I was also the victim of the long log ins and not being able to load my "People & Places".
The last patch cleared up the P&P issues (but I got some bookmarks to places in the south that I have never been to before ), but I was still having the issues with the CTD's around the gates, and only in Empire as my testing shows.
The crash is related to images that are generated for the billboards at the gates. Most of the images, as reported in prior threads about the IMG folder are either non viewable or just plain corrupted. With a bit of patience, I was able to isolate the problem to the billboards, and like clockwork, when the image changed, I CTD'd. At the time I was testing this, I was windowed and watching the contents of the IMG folder and saw the new files show up. Trying to view the images with the Windows Picture viewer gives the "No Preview Available" and using Paint Shop Pro 9 causes the program to give me an error message saying that the format is not supported. In multiple cases, this was either a .jpg or a .png image that was at fault. This issue does not exist in 0.0 (no billboards FTW!!1!), but I'm not willing to take a chance on that.
For CCP, this error is very reproducable.
The solution that worked for me, however, may not for very many other people: -Start the Eve client. -Before you log in, navigate to the folder CCP/Eve/cache/browser/img and delete the contents of the folder -Log in -While in the character selection screen, go to window mode if not already so do to your style of use and empty out the IMG folder. After this has occured, rename the folder to something else. For me, I just named it img2. -Use a bit of caution and test the temp fix. I would highly recommend that you go to a safe area, in a shuttle or other ship that has little to no value of you and jump around to a few systems. For me, I made an alt and just jumped him all over the place until I was satisfied that the fix worked. -Upon logging out of Eve, rename the folder to IMG, or just delete the folder that you renamed. When you fire up the client again or log back in, another folder with the name of IMG will be created again. Deleting the folder while Eve was running was hit and miss as far as causing the CTD in testing.
Lather, wash, rinse, and repeat as necessary for desired affect.
Currently, none of the other fixes have worked for me. Tonight was the first time in 10 days I have been able to move assets and get back to where we are operating out of without seeing my desktop again without my choice in the matter, and I had sound enabled, running dual core, nothing turned off, the whole evening after I did this.
I hope this helps at least someone other my own drunk self.
