Edited by: Parcs on 03/12/2006 13:47:22 Lineage 2 is probably my most played mmo, I stuck with it for as long as I did because I enjoy pvp, and games without open pvp don't hold my interest for more than a couple of weeks. What really put me off pvp in L2 though, was forcelogging and bsoe's. For anyone that didn't play it, a bsoe - or blessed scroll of escape - is something you buy at an affordable price to instantly teleport back to town. There's also an easy-to-do exploit to circumvent the "you cannot exit the game during combat" function and instantly kick your own character out of the game, even though it's supposed to remain there for a few seconds. While it is an exploit, most people don't hesitate to use it because "everyone does it anyway". It should be self explanatory how pvp works with these in the game.
Eve looks really appealing because of warp scramblers and such, but I haven't heard much about what the situation of logging during combat is. If I warp scramble someone, will he be able to exit the game? Will he still remain in game long enough for me to have my way with him? Is it something that's often done or not an issue?
I'm also curious as to how pvp really goes. I mean.. is it strictly corp wars and pirates vs prey, or can you actively pvp without doing piracy and ore theft? Is it possible to log on, look for a fight, and pvp some within an evening? I usually prefer fighting the good fight, but the drawback is that often in mmo's there's not much pvp to be had unless you run around griefing people and start crap yourself.

Edited by: Asestorian on 03/12/2006 13:57:26 Unfortunately logging in combat exists here too. What's supposed to happen if you enter combat and log off is there is 15 minutes where your ship stays in space, and if you are warp scrambled, will stay where it was too instead of warping off somewhere and having to be probed. However there are people who have found ways to work around this system. CCP think its really really lame though, and are apparently thinking of ways to solve the whole logging in combat thing.
As for fighting the good fight, well, that depends on what you call good. You don't have to pirate, but anti-pirate doesn't really work, and is basically the same as pirating only pirates.
You could join a corp or alliance, and call yourselves the good guys, and therefore when you fight, you are fighting the good fight
Edit: reading your post more thoroughly. EVE's PvP system doesn't really make it easy to just go out and have a bit of PvP fun and a laugh for a few hours, then log off for RL. This is because you can lose your ship, and then you have to go back and get another one from somewhere, rather than just getting back up and starting to smack people about again. It can also be hard to find targets, as you have to look for them, and there is often a lot of running away of either you or your enemies because of blobs or they just don't want to fight. However when a proper fight occurs, its great stuff, and full on alliance wars are amazing to behold, with all the fleets of capital ships and doom etc.

Well, that sure was a strange reply. I've found the opposite.
There are a lot of people and a lot of star systems, and each section of space has different characters in it (i.e. different real people). You can check the starmap, in many areas with sec ratings > 0.0 but < 5.0, there's at least a few ship kills per night.
Also, there is indeed the good fight. There are some local antipirate groups near me that regularly engage pirates, and try to convince them not to hang around their areas of space, etc...
There is also some role playing areas too.
The only catch to PvP here is that you can get jumped by a group of players and ganked, but that's the kind of crud you get in any game.
As for logging out, I haven't heard of people doing that very much. Your mileage may vary.
Just remember - the losses in this game can be quite high. Insure your ships, keep your medical clone up to date, and don't fly anything fancy (or with fancy modules) you can't afford to lose.

Edited by: Parcs on 04/12/2006 12:16:47 Some pretty mixed responses huh, I'll have to poke around a bit ingame and see what I come across.
I don't mind being somewhat liberal about the "good fight" (anyone familiar with Tau from warhammer? Die! For the greater good, of course). Pirating pirates sound good enough for me. I've also been poking at bounty hunting a bit, but am not sure how one would go about tracking down a specific player across several systems. Are there drones for that or something?

Some agents propose a character locating service...
As for finding a good fight. Sometimes you happen to look for quite a while before you can find a suitable adversary. Just don't be a fool like me and be afk at this precise moment ----- " There's no brave in a 5-to-1 fight. Just 5 cowards and a fool. - Perhaps. But it worked didn't it?" |

Want to fight as much as possible?
Get into a territory claiming alliance, preferably one that is at war. More fun than most other things in EVE.

If you want fights that usually have meaning and are regularly quite nice, fleet combat in 0.0 with alliances can be interesting.
That being said, I don't prefer fleet combat that much, rather instead focusing on smaller gang combat that my piracy roots gave me. Oh, by the way, the thrill of the hunt as a pirate is par none in this game, when I started out it actually gave me shakes throughout my body when I hit a good target !

Edited by: Losmandy on 05/12/2006 07:26:18 If you want pvp on tap just got any 0.4 to 0.1 systems with a few pilots in local and ask for pvp. You won't have to wait long.
Not sure about the "good fight" thing though, very little pvp in EVE is by mutual agreement on a 1 to 1 basis that is.

Edited by: Parcs on 05/12/2006 11:07:37 Eh I'm not much into duels and the like, those don't really make the pvp in mmo's (imo, anyways).
I tried some ore thievery today. I guess it's not much for a good cause (other than my own :D) but I was mostly looking for some action. I got popped a few times but what was mostly disappointing was how annoyed people get at ore theft/pvp even though they completely mauled me. I managed to target jam a guy once to which the response was "jamming is for losers". Kay, guess I'll be hip and turn it off then.
Territory conquest sounds like a lot of fun. I do enjoy pvp with a greater goal and purpose. I'll have to look into that some more.
