it would be nice if this didnt happen for 2 nights now for me and few other corp mates who lost ships due to a crash and the attacking party not crashing, its not funny any more and i wish the petitions would speed up.

Guys at CCP:
Please send up a nice computer. My computer keeps crashing and it's annoying. My power supply capacitor is bad, and causes me to crash about once every 4 minutes once I enter the game. I am too poor to afford a new rig, and it's been years since my latest major system upgrade. I can't play like this, and I can't report problems efficiently.
Please deliver to my home address (which you have on file) the following things:
AMD 64-bit top-of-the-line processor Top-of-the-line motherboard with top-of-the-line architecture with 2 gigabytes of top quality memory High quality power supply Top-of-the-line cooling Dual 8800 videocards 2 SATA Hard Drives (I have my own working DVD Burner, so that should save you a couple bucks) Top-of-the-line Audigy soundcard A nice computer case The latest copy of EON
Thank you very much for addressing my problem and allowing me to continue playing your great game and continue subscribing so all I see are not snippits of EVE.
Yours,
Siigari Kitawa Frustrated @ her current computer

Excuses. If CCP needed more capital to launch a bug-free expansion, they should of charged for it. I specifically would PREFER to pay if it'd make things better.
Anyway...
There are queues in deep 0.0. I advise pilots not to rely on gates to escape engagements.
There is no such thing as a bug-free anything in computer science. The only thing they could do to avoid this sort of situation would be for them to hire 30,000 quality assurance testers. And I seriously don't think that CCP has the funds to hire 30,000 professional testers full time.

Yeah, and these things do catch a lot of bugs and etc...
However, there are certain bugs that will *only* show up under heavy loads. And it is nigh impossible for a company like CCP to hire enough QA folks to produce these heavy loads.

My comments were not a 'whine' they were constructive/on topic, with viable solution.
The problem isn't the patch, or anything to do with deployment.
It's hard to belive that the problems i describe will go away unless there's decisive action on ccp's part to balance the population out into different areas out on the server.
It's fair call imo, id love know why they don't.

it's a new problem with revelations and it will be fixed asap or sooner

Here is an idea:
Do things one at a time, instead of in huge chunks of unmanageable mess. But then they can't do magazine articles and promotional stunts. The fact that after each major patch we have an influx of new players (or re-ignition of interest of old ones) is exactly why CCP is going for this type of "impressions first, get it to work properly later" policy. But that has nothing to do with the people trying to fix things, it has to do with the people that make CCP policies. ________________

I think I know that when I get a black screen and my computer spontaneously restarts itself that my video card is taking a crap on my computer.
I have been swapping out video cards due to instability for the past month (screen flickering, losing control, and all sorts of crashes and other restart problems.
I think I know what's causing my own issues, thanks.

Actually the Revelations client seems to have some particularly poor Direct3D code flying around inside it since loads of people have been reporting graphical glitches (including myself) and I know the effects of bad D3D code when I see it.

Results, eh? Funny thing about QA is that the results are not evident. Because the results are that things get fixed, which you dont see. So when you see something that IS happening, you claim it's bad QA. But as has been said, the issues we are seeing are happening under load. And that is not something that can be tested when not under load, so what is obvious to you now was unknowable to them then.
By the way, did you participate in the requested stress tests? If not, I blame you for this problem, since you did not contribute to QA's ability to detect this problem. ___________________________________

The artful use of timesinks in a virtual world can alleviate much problems with latency.
Think of the Earth as the perfect mmog, but with a really high pixel count, and relatively little latency. Usually, there are timesinks everywhere, but most of them are well accepted by the players, except for the relatively recently implemented ones. Everything that the users expect to be able to do is generally within the limits of the firmware.
In the simplest terms, mmogs need more software engineering and less development. It's necessary to ask, "Given flawless operation on our end, what is the theoretical performance limit of the infrastructure that connects us to our users?" Once that is established, surely it must be necessary to place restrictions on user actions where they can with varying degrees of subtlety be implemented, and extended distractions where they cannot.
Aspects of the program, which are bound to cause continuously worsening effects as more users are added, must be retooled fundamentally, rather than have bandaids applied to them, or approached through optimizations. I'm not a programmer. Matter of fact, fractions confuse me frequently. Some things just seem kind of simple though.
For an example, take gang health status reporting. Now, I don't know how it works, but I have an idea that it is an entry field on a server somewhere that is broadcast to a user, and that the user confirms it, and twice the number of packets are required to verify the data either way. I also suspect that with each added user, the number of packets increases multiplicatively, probably moreso if client confirmation happens to be required somewhere. It's always at least N collated broadcasts sent to N users. The problem is reduced without peerage, but it is still present.
While it might be impressive to get 250 collated messages to 250 users every 5 seconds, it probably makes more sense to send 250 collated messages to 1 or 2 users who opt (or are selected) to recieve the data for some purpose sensible to the user, while non-opting clients know not to wait for it.
Judicious economy prevails where technological innovation stumbles. If I had to speculate, it may be that because most code factories do not have a modern history or bourgeois antecedant, and so they must tend to have underdeveloped industry institutions such as controllership outside of the marketting division, or practices which encourage developmental thrift. Artistic media is no exception, and it never has been.

Held out well?
I stopped playing with my main around 2200 due to massive lag and disconnects. I would not consider this to be the hardware held out well. Considering I am paying to play this account and can't I would suggest less posts about the stupid, bloody record number of players and more into fixing issues that was supposedly going to be fixed with the last patch.

Currently, gang health status works like this:
Squadron:
You see the health of everyone in the squadron including the leader.
Wing:
You see the health status of all squadron leaders and the wing leader.
Fleet:
You see the health status of all wing leaders and the fleet commander.
Or that is what I've gathered from Devposts.

That's pretty much how the old gang health system worked, yes. It scaled as N^2. The spam in the log server became very obvious in large gangs.
Originally by: Lygos While it might be impressive to get 250 collated messages to 250 users every 5 seconds, it probably makes more sense to send 250 collated messages to 1 or 2 users who opt (or are selected) to recieve the data for some purpose sensible to the user, while non-opting clients know not to wait for it.
But of course they didn't do anything about gang health message spam in this patch. Oh no, nothing at all
They only capped the old gang system at 50 players, and introduced the new fleet system with structured reporting which means that no-one in the fleet sees the health bars of more than 11 other players in the fleet, regardless of how big the fleet grows.
So lets compare, old gang of 256 players vs full new fleet of 256 players.
Old gang: 256^2 = 65536 notifications per tick New fleet:
Fleet commander sees 5 wing commanders: 5 notifications 5 wing commanders each see 1 fleet commander and 5 squad commanders: 30 notifications 250 squad members (inc squad commanders) see 10 squad members and 1 wing commander: 2750 notifications
Total: 5+30+2750 = 2785 notifications
Note also how the new system scales. Assuming an umlimited number of wings could be formed, and each wing is filled before the next opens:
Fleet commander scales as N/51, so O(N) Wing commander sees max 6 players, nomatter how large N grows Squad members see max 11 players, nomatter how large N gets.
They also used this new fleet structure to sort out similar scalability issues with the application of gang bonuses.
Previously, gang bonuses had to be determined by comparing the skills and modules of all members of the gang against each other, again scaling as O(N^2). In the new system, only the three tiers of commander need to be compared. Only the number of 3 person compares are increased with increasing gang size, which makes it an O(N) problem. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |
