I think I have a solution to drones. It would take a few simple changes.
1) Remove ALL drone bays from the game. 2) Make drones "Mountable" 3) Add Sadles to the game 4) Add Scimitars to the game. 5) Add "Deep-Space Breathing" Rank 4 skill to the game. 6) Add "Sword play" Rank 5 skill to the game.
Now, with those small changes we'd have the ability to ride our drones into battle. Since they would command like a ship, they wouldn't go crazy. In order to not make this overpowerd, the only slots on a drone would be "Sword" hi slots, 1 mid slot, and 1 low slot.
It would fit something like this.
2x "Arby" Scimitar. 1x "Barton" Saddle. 1x "Intenal Force Field Bridle"
Obviously the Optimal range on your scimitar would be very low, and you could train "Toss" and "Arm strength" in order to increase your fall-off.
The way drone fights would play out with these ideal changes would be something like this. All drone damage changed to EM. All drone damage increased by 2000x. Once the enemies shields are downed (by the drones gun). The "Rider" can then use his "Scimitar" to cleave the enemy ship in half. This would be chance based like the current setup for EW. "Scimitars" would have a "Sharpness" value, that value would be placed against "Armor Integrity" if the "check" failed, the ship would be cleaved in half. Destroying pods would be a lot like the current.

Fix drones for once?
Sounds like you don't remember when they always hit for 100% even after you were 20au away in warp. 
That being said, add "Drone Riding" as a Level 3 skill (give room for future advancements)and you're set.
