Edited by: 8ObliVioN8 on 06/12/2006 02:41:35 I recently had the pleasure of significantly upgrading my ageing Athlon 3200+ system to the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.67GHz XFX GeForce 8800GTX eVGA nForce 680i mobo 2GB Corsair XMS 8500 (dual channel) 250GB Seagate SATA300 Realtek Onboard HD Audio
I have the latest drivers for all the hardware (97.02 forceware for gfx card) and a clean install of Windows XP Pro (sp2).
The problem I am having is that for some unknown reason while I'm in Eve, the hard drive is doing some serious caching (well, activity at least) that is causing Eve to freeze for 10-20 seconds at a time. I can't for the life of me figure out what is happening and why. But Eve is totally unplayable for me at the moment.
I have tried disabling the onboard audio, assigning the cpu affinity to core 0, reducing all the settings to low, a clean boot, disabling any fancy stuff in the bios (such as NVIDIA GPU Ex, LinkBoost, HPET Function, etc). I've also tested the RAM with memtest, but to no avail.
Are there some experienced and worldly wise techies out there who can suggest a possible solution? This one has me really stumped and is stopping me from playing....

I've tried that - defragged the system drive and games drive - no joy
From what I can gather on various other forums, there are numerous issues with the 8800 series, not just with Eve. I'm wondering if there are any Eve players with a similar setup who don't have any problems?

I have a similar system.
E6600/Gigabyte DQ6 mb/4G RAM/EVGA 8800GTX. The big difference between your system and mine appears to be the audio - I disabled my onboard Realtek after I got tired of the constant popping and *****ling. I have a Creative X-FI XtremeMusic card now. Try disabling the Realtek stuff in your bios and see if it helps.

I always play and wait and see when it comes to hardware. Especially in the CPU and video card area. There is so much competative attitude going on, everyone rushes the products out the door without full testing. Drivers are never right and or bios/hardware is faulty. Remember Intel a few years ago with thier P4's? How about the first x-boxes and now the first Xbox 360's? PS3's are haing problems as well. Never buy hardware when it first comes out.

I have the Evga680i motherboard and the XFX 8800GTX, I've not fitted my XFi card due the issues mentioned on the EVGA forums. I think there are a few post on EVGA about Sata drive problems, I use IDE and don't get any hard disk thrashing when running Eve.

I usually do exactly the same but my old system decided to take permanent retirement, so I had the money and the opportunity!! I'm sure it'll be a wise investment when all the bugs, driver issues etc are sorted out.
The only thing that worries me though is whether it is a hardware problem or not and that's difficult to tell as the symptons could be a result of a number of possible failures (e.g. poor power supply to gfx card - I have a Tagan 700W SLi approved psu installed).
If it's softtware, I can live with that and wait for the updated drivers - that's the price you pay for buying the latest kit!

I tried disabling the Realtek and therefore running Eve (and Win XP) with no sound, but the problem still exists.

I actually have a very similar setup to the OP on my home computer. The only real appreciable difference is sound. I run a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty card. I have noticed no issues with Eve on that system at all.
If you've upgraded your system, I'd recommend trying to swap in an old hard drive, installing Eve on it, and seeing if you encounter the same hiccup. You could also try this with other components, one at a time, to see if any of them have an effect.
Alternatively, you might try running logserver to see if any pattern shows up in the calls Eve is making when the system actually freezes up.

Not sure what drivers your running but I know the MSI ones for their card where buggy and downgrading to the 96.XX solved some issues. I always run the nvidia drivers versus the card manufacturer.

Just so you know, the Nvidia ones are buggy too. :( It doesn't seem to show up in Eve, but other games, especially ones using OpenGL, are breaking because of them. Wish they had beta drivers available for Windows...

Thanks for this Nash.
I have two hdd's - both Seagate Barracuda's. One is 250GB, the other 320GB, obviously not in a RAID array. I've tried running XP from both disks and also Eve from both disks. I'm still getting the same problems, but less frequently. The issue also occurs in Elder Scrolls Oblivion but to a much lesser extent than Eve so that means it's not an Eve specific problem.
It's funny you mention the Creative X-Fi card as I have one of those arriving tomorrow (I've always hated on board audio and I'm sure it's gotta be causing problems somehow!). I've also re-installed Win XP again today and only installed minimal drivers and apps, updated all the MS updates (critical updates only). I also flashed the bios to the latest version today.
Maybe the X-Fi card will make a difference....?

It sounds more and more likely like this is an issue with a piece of your hardware. After you take a look at trying Eve on the other hard drive, I would look at firmware updates. If there's still an issue then you're looking at possibly a motherboard problem I think.
