Recommend a UK DSL option please
Planning to arrange a DSL connection to my parents house around Christmas time. Based in the UK. Need recommendations of good services, don't need to be exceptionally fast, cheap is good, not requiring software would also be a bonus. It'll be light usage, but I'd prefer one that allows a second computer to connect occasionally in a wireless fashion.
If I go for a wires only, please also recommend a DSL Router that would be compatible with the option your recommend.

I can recommend Zen Internet - really helpful customer service, good and reliable connection... I've been with them for about a year and I won't be leaving.

If you can get it, go for cable (and Telewest at that). It's far cheaper than DSL in speed comparisons (4MB for ú20 a month). ---

Gotta reccomend Zen as well. Decent price, and they're practically never down. And when they are, great customer support. Solid service, really.

Would I be biased in recommending Zen Internet, if I said I work for them?
If you're after a wireless router, the Speedtouch 585/780WL have got pretty decent reviews (the 780 has VOIP-functionality - I'm not using either of them myself, but one of the two (probably the 585) is on my list to replace this Netgear DG834G v2).

Get a good ISP comparison here The comparisons are done by user ratings (apart from connection speed which is tested by the website).
Generally Zen come top by miles on a regular basis, although I've never used them. I was extremely impressed with Virgin's support and reliability while I was with them. I changed to UKOnline a while ago for more speed at less cost, and they've been fairly reliable, but if there is a problem their support is rubbish.

I made the mistake of leaving Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange who i had been happy with for over 5 years to TalkTalk for their "Free" Broadband (if you take their talk3 package which we already had) unfortunately, it seems that TalkTalk were unprepared for the surge in customers and didn't have enough IP Adresses to assign to everyone (what i read on the interweb, not sure if it's true) but i was getting connection drops every 30 minutes.
I then tried to cancel the broadband package and i moved my phone service back to BT. I was getting free broadband from TalkTalk for 4 or 5 months before they finally sent a mac code so i could switch, of course, now it's too late, cause i`m now living in Iceland ^_^
So yeah, don't go to TalkTalk ___________________________ ~Jiekon

I'll say one thing, don't go with Tiscali.
I'm changing now after just 2 months with their awful, awful service. Paying for unlimited but i'm receiving emails saying my use is being capped. Dosn't work at all during peak times.
Customer service = 'Turn your modem off then on again'.

I'm with Zen, and they're pretty ok. Rarely ever go down, helpful customer service / technical support, and not extortionate price. You can get cheaper, but you usually get what you pay for. -----------------------------------------------

Don't go near wanadoo/orange. It's the most unreliable piece of **** isp I've ever used. I had so many problems with them I had their indian callcenter on speed dial.
I switched over to telewest and have had no problems since.

4mb is actually ú25 a month excluding any short term introductory offers.
Telewest is no longer the best value for money uncapped broadband, sadly it hasn't been for a while now.

I know I'm going to get flamed to hell for this, but hear me out.
AOL.
Yes, their software is total crap, in fact it's appauling and full of memory leaks and bugs that make it crash and drop your connection, BUT there is a way around it, and the connection behind it is the most stable I've ever had.
Most people make the mistake of running the AOL browser software when there's a simple way of getting around it. If you don't use it, it can't harm you.
Simply buy a router, instead of the supplied crapheap "Voyager Modem" they give you, and use the firmware on board it to connect to the internet as soon as it is powered on.
The result I have is full speed always on internet connection that I've NEVER had problems with. Not once.
As soon as I turn on my PC, all I have to do once it's booted is open firefox, and voila, 24mb DSL at my feet whenever I need it.
The connection is awesome, as it rides on the BT phone exhanges that supply phone lines, rather than an independant service by NTL or some other crapheap company.
Since I set up my router like this I've not had one connection problem, not one cut off download, not one service outage. Ever.
Yes, AOL's software is shocking, and is the root of all their service problems, but if you don't use it their service and connection is ROCK SOLID.
Okay, you can flame me now.

GO NTL! They might have terrible (or non existant) customer service via the phone lines, but tbh, if you get through, engineers are pretty quick to come around to your place and get everything fixed.
But then again, I had no choice, when I wanted broadband a couple of years ago it was Ntl 600k or a 56k modem.
Even now, I could swap to other services, but I'd be dropping from my rock stable 6 meg (never ever had to phone about problems for the cable internet), down to 1 meg on the ole BT line thanks to being on the edge of the exchanges radius.
However, I have alot of family and friends on PlusNet, and by what I've heard, they're pretty good and stable.
Oh, and dont go tiscali, they were rubbish a couple of years ago, probably havnt got better.

Whatever you do, do not go with Eclipse. I used them for the past 2.5 years and the past 6 months have been terrible, they say they don't implement traffic management but they do.
The best place to go is adslguide and check out the various forums.
Personally I'm with Keconnect, I pay ú35 a month for an upto 8mb connection with 50gb monthly d/l. Tech support is first class i.e. no call centre!

NTL are ****in awful, to them it is acceptable to say that 50kbps speed is a 1.1mb broadband connection.
