I'm in the middle of a problem choosing either a nvidia chipset or the ati
my options are 1. Ati's X1900Xt Chipset Asus EAX1900XT/HTVDP 2. Nvidia's 7900GT 3. Nvidia's 7900GS
Afaik the ati's can doe some more with AA and FAA (iirc)
I guess they will both make some noise and swallow a truckload of watts
What would you choose?

Problems are: ATI + AMD = huh companions, Nvidia + Intel = companions. ATI + Microsoft = at the moment not a companion... I hope you understood what i talking. If not: if you have AMD system - take ati, if Intel - Nvidia. If you dreaming about wista - take nvidia. Damn - it's hard to look on to titans war (not in eve)

I seem to recall hearing something about EVE favoring NVidia chipsets in the future. --- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?...

You are 100% so, so wrong. ATI worked together with Microsoft to ensure their card worked very, very well with Windows Vista, as Nvidia did most probably, they are completly un-biased.
AMD and ATI generaly tend to work together better (and they AMD just aquired ATI). Having said that Intel sets and ATI cards work just as well, in the end it generally depends on your personal choice, although ATI tend to be vastly better at quality rendering at high resolutions on their high end cards, and Nvidia tend to beat ATI in the mid-range on speed (although generaly the margine is tiny).
If you want to be ready for Vista, WAIT for ATI's cards, because they are garanteed to work on Vista (they worked closely with Microsoft to ensure they work), and they're amazing acording to a lot of sources (and their drivers are generaly better under Vista at the moment, although that technically means nothing, as both companies will have drivers out the door and ready for Vista).
They showcased the new EVE engine on the new Nvidia 8800 at the EVGA showcase, but that's because EVGA manufacture Nvidia cards, not ATI (it was just a technical showcase). It really won't matter weither you have ATI or Nvidia in the next generation of cards, since they both handle pipes and shaders in a similar way, although a lot of sites are saying that ATI's memory processing is far more efficient and showing a lot of promise.
At the end of the day, either company will do you well, and there will be little to no difference between either companies cards on the same generation.
If you're looking for a cheap card, that'll handle Vista, get the ATI X1550XT http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36197. ---

do note that the new ATI site is now part of the AMD site
as he said, ATI + AMD, NVidia + Intel .. microsoft doesn't care, but it has been known to favour Intel/Nvidia over ATI/AMD. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Xaroth Brook Brainiac of Doomcraft |

But he's 100% wrong . AMD & ATI, and Nvidia & Intel work together, but on everything else he A) Makes no sense, and B) is wrong. ---

Get the 7900GT, i run a AMD 3200 64bit cpu with 2GB of RAM and is can play eve and counter strike at the same time.
Hell'o has no clue what he is talking about with getting along. Its all about standard, not what company gets along.

I ca't believe that he listened to that guy... what you said is 10 times more helpful, plus it all comes down to personal preference in the end. I have nVidia on my laptop and ATI on my desktop and there isn't much difference if you're going for the extreme high-end version of each one.

True also, but reading the problems on the new radeons, which only runs with the 'hacked' drivers, my decision was made...
Eventually bought the 8800 gtx in sli mode with silentpipes, atm there is no comparison in the land of radeon :-)
but thnx for the info ofcourse :-)

That's my reason for going with nvidia, ati have a long history of bad drivers which continues to this day, their multi monitor support is also not as good. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

get a intel duo, vastly overclockable. the 6300 clocks up to almost the duo extreme with low overclocking understanding with the right mother board (try the evga 680 sli, its expencive but with some low latency RAM u can work wonders), that is already higher than amd's flagship core. always used to be an amd man myself, but when intels ú130 processor is better than amd's BEST procesor, well its a no brainer really.
as for gfx well ive always been a nvidia fan, and an 8800gtx seems the way to go at the moment. not quite as fast currently as a 7950gtx2 but wel thats not exactly a great investment of ú380 since its not dx10 complient.
hope this helps
