MBH I don't still play, the emu lost it's way years ago, but I was there for opening day at Anchorhead freeze tag, and until 100's of screaming kids showed up from closed down SWG:NGE to demand NGE crapola in the pre-CU emu, and the emu-devs showed them consideration. It's hard to believe that Smedley guy, after destroying SWG, in the worse way ever, then with SOE falling apart, got a job with the new company that took over SOE and is now the big guy making mobile games for them. I hope he burns the new company to the ground, their worse than EA. Shame on you Smedley, you should be cleaning toilets. CCP don't ever do that, learn from the worst player/vet abuse in the industry of all time and don't make the same mistakes.

I remember Starsider server, it was a great place and I don't think the emulator could capture what I liked , for me it was more about the people I played with rather than the game itself, and now that the official servers are long gone and those players have scattered to the winds it will be very difficult to reproduce what made SWG special. |

We had about 50 players in our PA. Lost half at CU, the other half left at the release of NGE. When NGE hit, the server literally died. Think Jita busy trading hub, then suddenly no one, no one at all. There were a lot of full servers, after NGE they could hardly merger two half full servers. NGE was just horrid junk.

Anyhoot what was so good about it, it was sandbox openworld FW (GCW) based with a character skill tree system (mixed professions however you wanted). There were three factions, Rebel, Imperial and Neutral. Neutral was just that, and later was a good faction to play if running missions for Hutt etc (I did some on another server after JTLS (spaceships)).
For rebel and Imperial, it was a bloody war (which most played). You could go overt or covert, and be automatically dunked into overt (flagged) if attacking enemy faction npc's (such as in missions) or players, or bases, or being scanned while trying to go into an enemy controlled city. Because of this, huge battles could suddenly break out in cities because someone got detected by a guard etc. Cities could be captured and faction npc changed.
Also player owned bases were a big thing, part of the planet capture system, you could place your own bases and base structures. And as well player towns based on faction alignment, with housing as perimeters and then inside faction bases, weapon mounts and mines etc. It was a very very excellent FW-PvP game and very star warsy as it was handled. One of the best mmo's ever made... pre-cu, then still good pre-nge. NGE was an entirely different game, No Good Excuse of a game, removed skills and all the FW stuff stripped away, what was left of it anyway after CU.

NGE= negative game enhancement! lol
My feelings were from some of my research was the NGE was crammed down SOE's throat by Lucas Arts. It came way too sudden and out of the blue compared to everything else SOE did in that game. Toward the end of the game SOE had done a pretty good job of patching it back together and making a somewhat decent game of it but it still wasnt as good as pre NGE.
I know the people working on it do this for free in their spare time but havent they been working on this for over 10yrs and they just finished creature handler? At this rate JTL will never come. |

At this rate JTL will never come. And likely still has nothing to do with the GCW in any pre-CU state which was what they originally set out to do being a pre-cu emu. They are just working on another themepark style game, fooled all the original supporters that helped get the project started which would have never happened otherwise. bah emu's.

My first and primary, the only one I had in a PA, a PA I liked a lot, was Sunrunner with my master bounty hunter. Also had carbine weapons and a sliver of combat med. Starsider I think I had a MCH, master creature handler. Then after the revamp and MCH removed from the game I did the respec to master image... designer? Also spaceship engineering. The other two servers I played on I don't remember, I mainly played my MBH, was so good. You could only have one character slot per server.

i never played SWG, by the time it was out, i think i was in EnB, and then i came to eve when EnB closed in 04/
So i'm not 100% sure what the main issue for the hate of the NGE was.. iirc wasn't it that all the jedi and sith who had spend months or years (depending) gaining levels and building out there chars were suddenly non existent cause any noob could become a jedi/sith and be max lvl real fast?
OMG Comet Mining idea!!! Comet Mining!

Imagine you log into EVE tomorrow and SURPRISE!!!!!!!! - there's a new change where instead of all of the different skills and skill que system that you had for the past 6+ years, you had to respec your toon into: Freighter pilot, Gank pilot, Miner, Station trader - and that's it - NO mixing and matching...
Sudden, unannounced, unwanted, unliked changes tend to severely cheese people off... (comments from 8+ year bittervet of SWG)

Yep, that was probably one of the biggest issues, they ripped out the skill tree system for a class system something like you'd find in WoW. The skill tree system was essentially an EVE type system, training one skill to unlock another to train. They were categorized by classes but you can train any skills from many class to mix and match however you wanted to build. There was a cap, but unlike EVE the amount of skills were more limited, 100's instead of 1000's. A lot more skills than UO had though.
But there were a lot of other issues (or detriments), Jedi wasn't really much of a problem. That effected a very small percentage of the player-base, as there were not many that unlocked Jedi anyway. Most didn't even want to unlock Jedi. The game would have done better without them at all, as SW canon is more in line with and which most recognized.

Most didn't even want to unlock Jedi. The game would have done better without them at all, as SW canon is more in line with and which most recognized. But if you heard a bit of players complaining thinking Jedi was the problem, I wouldn't doubt you heard that from them. To unlock Jedi, you essentially had to have no life whatsoever. So, essentially you had very young and compulsive people unlocking Jedi (not all of them) and whining about almost everything since that was mostly the entirety of their lives. whine whine whine whine, seriously. All the whining and all the tears, it made it irresistible for players to train bounty hunters to hunt them down and perma-kill them! But, people that like EVE, I know many of them would of liked SWG. The two games had a lot in common. A lot of SWG players came here after NGE. I'll dig up the graph here... http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-2.png
Notice the data points between EVE and SWG. The SWG slide happened at the NGE data point, sliding as long term subscriptions had already been abandoned at that point and eventually running out. SWG and EVE make a big X in the chart, many SWG players jumped ship to EVE. Likely, half that stuck around SWG did so due to having the SOE all access pass, mostly playing other games. I had one at the time, but I just canceled the whole thing at that point. SOE was ripping all their games to shreds at that point, wasn't worth the $22/mo any longer. SOE isn't even around any longer, they punked their subscribers around for too long.
Ah got it. yea i;'d be pretty pissed too, it sone of the reasons i play eve, the skill system

That, plus they shafted crafters. Pre NGE they had a decay system in place where as you used items they would slowly lose hp and then break. Getting killed also took a chunk out of the items health. Crafted items were also better than any loot and when it came to crafting the quality of materials used made a huge difference in the quality of the produced item. The very best equipment cost a fortune. When the NGE hit decay was removed and looted things became better than crafted and they savagely dumbed down the crafting process. Predictably this resulted in the economy going down the shitter with crafting becoming near useless. A true crime as the old SWG crafting and mining system is by far the best one made so far.

The 796 or so MB Ram I used to run SWG on still loaded . The 15 years old SVGA 14'' monitor I used to run it on is not working properly anymore. I got an offer for a $35 LCD monitor that is easier to carry than a CRT ($40 with tax). The offer is valid until Thursday.
Then I can get home internet , reload the client (if feasible) , and log in to the EMU.
I used to play on Chilastra or I can't remember which other ones.
I used to have over 8 or 9 characters.
My main was an Entertainer (like every one at 90). I had 4 traders, the best an engineering trader able to make R2 droids... (I was planning to develop trading items network on all planets and production.) The third best player was a Commando learning towards Base of Operation.
Our server lost to the Empire, but I never leveled a Jedi yet. I played Rebel side and Neutral.
I won a tourney with the trading cards which are all gone now btw.
The worst part is that police tried to destroy the saved data. The good part is the Lucas billion dollar deal for 30% more movies (total, 60% from current). I will now copyright it to give in inheritance to my child with the attacks against it . |
