Just fly a claw
I used to be an avid hater of the Claw, but in practice, even with just the two midslots, its a very good fighting ceptor. You don't need a webber simply due to the 10km falloff you have on Small Auto's. I don't hate it, but i don't particularly love it either.
Whoever says fly a Rifter instead of a Claw is crazy :P -----

- mwd used to approach and escape, or break the fighting pace - left offline during fight so that the turrrets hit.
- cap power relay for the armor repper when needed.
- intertia stabs so it flys quick enough without the mwd.

Claw is currently the ultimate scout.
I dumped the Cheetah and just use a proto cloak on the Claw.
At over 7000 m/s I can buzz any battle group, while taking hits at zero damage. This is actually a better way find out max target ranges than just sitting there cloaked doing nothing but looking.
And with 250mm artys and standard launcher, it has bigger teeth than the cheetah.
And with rigging, the speed can be significantly increased.

istabs don't add a speed bonus, just agility, iirc the mass reduction means you'll get a significant speed bonus, but only when mwding (or using afterburners) nanofibers however increase speed and agility when not mwding (but provide less of a bonus to agility and to mwd speed)
if that made any sense basically try fitting a combination of nanos and istabs and see what you like :)

Edited by: Reggie Stoneloader on 17/02/2007 09:12:01 Someone mentioned an arty setup for a Claw. I don't fly one, but I was puttering on Quickfit and would like to know whether something l ike this would work:
3x 250mm Arty
MWD 20km warp jammer
Gyro 3x nano/overdrive/inertial stabs to taste
The inability to repair might be a deal-breaker, since it would get wtfpwned by anything with missiles, but I was thinking a setup like this could work on the same principle as a Crow, picking its fights by controling range.
Would the tracking fall flat? With T1 Proton ammo rather than Tremor or Quake you get about a 13km optimal and a 10km falloff with the modest skills I assigned myself, and a .082 tracking speed. I have no way to test it, but that seems a bit slow. It would sure have trouble with drones.
Also, the DPS would be kind of lame, since artillery is famously short in that category, but if the other guy can't hit you, you've got all the time in the world to wear him down.
Thoughts?

no. it doesnt. imo its better than a stiletto... since you have 4 lowslots you can use to fit inertial stabs... for better speed. u can make a claw go 6000m/s+ with 3 good named inertial stabs.. and even faster with a weight reduction rig
Thats fast?
My ares goes faster than that with one inertial stab...

Okay, how do you go that fast? I see very fast ships around, like Crusaders pushing 7km/s and whatnot, and all the setups I've come up with on Quickfit are lucky to hit 5km/s. Are you using Gist MWD or rigs or what?
Also, why use 280mm arty? 250mm arty frees up enough space for a Gyro, so it does more DPS, and since you can't target past 20km anyway, the range is lass valuable than the tracking.

1x small armour rep t2 3x in stabs (named)
atm i'm doing 6.8k m/s and warp faster than anything can warp before a gate camp know i'm there. damage wise it's ok but like any inti you get web'd you go pop. tbh claw is just there to scram and fly fast. Anything else i go crow anyday though i rather cheaper inti's than a 200mil crow setup only getting 2mil back. [/url] |

Cap stability with a 20k and mwd? I think not
If you admit that your only there to scram and not do damage you might as well fly a stiletto. (midslots FTW) Use phelan lore's setup it's a very solid tackler.

the key for a claw setup is: -close setup: AC's(150 t2 are best) MUST have NOS, 7.5 scram/web, tank -range: arties, 20k scram, speed mods
now... picking your target is the other issue you have to consider: -when using close setup with 7.5 scram you have to avoid crows as there is no way you can get close enough... and anything that can outrun your mwd speed -in case you have close setup with web your targets will be mostly frigs as they don't tend to warp out that often and once you brake their tank they are poped before they get into warp, you can try other targets but you will need good bumping skills -about ranged setup... i don't have any advice cause i havent used it much
i much subscribe to montero's setup althou i've used something like: 3x150t2, knave/dim nos named mwd, web/7.5 scram 1xsar t2, 2x200mm rolled tungsten, mapc
i had about 1500 armor pre revelations with this setup and nice dps to deal even with cruisers...

The claw will outperform the Rifter under any situation. The ability for the Claw to dictate range and its low sig makes it a very fine killer.
You dictate your range without a web how?
BTW, my rifter has more HP, more DPS, and is faster (AB II on an inty LOL) than that setup. It also has a web and can lock out to 27km.
If you're gonna be in a gang you want a stiletto for the extra mids and the ability to lock out to 30k if you are getting boosted by a claymore.
The claw sucks. If you disagree, you suck too.
Negative - in gang i'll take a stiletto over any other ceptor, the 4th mid just makes it perfect for a cap booster/web (sitution dependant).
But in solo - I'd rather fly my claw than my sader or taranis. The massive powergrid it has combined with the low PG use of ac's makes it awesome for tanking - jaegerbomb might not be what a ceptor is supposed to do, but not even a plated AC punisher will be able to bring it down before he gets shredded.
And btw, if you think a rifter is better than a claw - try 200 plate on a claw, combine what with a 50% damage mode (over the rifters 25%) and you suddently have 2 ships with identical health.... but the claw with better cap, smaller sig and higher damage. And your also forgetting its quite easy to get a claw hitting 7k/s with no rigs or implants - it is a fast as hell ship, which works well with 250 light arty's.
The only drawback and complaint i have about the claw is its lock range, since 18k/m is just pathetic - it makes it hard to stay in range for fights against other ceptors (if you've ever fought a standard crow, youll know what i mean) granted each volley does 500 damage with arty's, but gettting in more than one volley on another ship before they go outside of lock range usually takes 10-15 secs in which time they can escape (pilot skill depending).

Disclaimer: I have never actually flown a claw.
I think some of you may have missed the point that the Claw is THE fastest ship in the game. It starts with the best base velocity, has low mass, and lots of low slots. Becuse of that, you can have total control over what range the fight happens at. The keep at range button is your friend.

Edited by: Bourgeoisvio on 29/07/2007 08:50:06 Just started flying Min interceptors and came here looking for advice.
Although a good setup is nice, I'm also looking for basic battle tactics for an interceptor. I know the usual one on one PvP stuff (hit MWD, orbit fast, don't get webbed), but what about gang activity (which I mostly fly)? It seems the rules would be different there. Sure I could get close and orbit a guy at 3k/sec where his turrets couldn't track me, but what about his buddies a couple dozen km away who I'm not orbiting at max traversal? Seems like they could kill me easily with my low traversal speed (relative to them) coupled with my increased sig radius from the usual MWD.
If not in this thread, can someone point me to one that could help?
Right now I'm thinking this for my setup:
Highs: Lowest caliber autocannons , rocket launcher or NOS Meds: MWD/Afterburner, 7.5k scrambler Lows: Unsure yet
Lowest caliber autocannons for max tracking (so I can orbit the target faster and still hit). May trade the rocket launcher for a NOS depending on what else I'm running. Thinking about using an AB instead of MWD since my gang usually jumps guys near gates and combat starts out at short to medium range (might not need the MWD to close such a distance, and orbiting at autocannon range means I probably won't be able to move max MWD speed anyways).
Lows? I honestly have no idea. I'm new when it comes to maxing out low slots. What would be the best for a small gang semi-suicidal frigate tackler?

So how do you get a claw over 7km/s? That many km/s sounds great for antifrig, and hell you could probably speedtank any bs's guns not even having to turn on your mwd. With MWD on, a -.9 web would put you at around 7hm/s, which is still nearly 1km/s. By my practical experience, that's fast enough to get out of web range, but you're still probably going to go pop. So is the claw antifrig or super speed tackle? And if it s speed tackle, then how do you avoid web+nos?
