Wouldn't it be great if you could walk around the station in character and meet other characters in person ..
Go get a juicy eve-burger while enjoing the view from the station
just a thought

It would certainly add to the game. I think this is something we will see in the future, like a game where you have Eve in the universe and anarchy online on the planets and stations. Would require more bandwidth, a bigger game overall and lots of more design, but in say 3-4 years we might be playing a game like that. --

Isnt that what SWG is doing? With the expansion pack as well, where you can fly in space. Shame its loaded with 10 gazillion bugs

Would be nice as an addon. But I rather have CCP focusing on space. You know... nifty little features like ships avoiding to fly through planets in warp and other stuff that makes cruising through the universe more beautiful and fun.

of course i am not saying that CCP should pull resources from space to make this instation thingy .. but this would be a nice addon. and this would make it impossible to hide in station .. one could just dock and beat the crap out a pirate on a local pub, and then CONCORD officers will arrest you and put you in the brig to cool of :P :D

MaiLina! As an educated Gallente you should know better! Every first year student knows that warp travel happens through the alpha-layer of subspace where mass does not exist! Just how else would we be able to accellerate to beyond the speed of light without the univerise exploding unless we had no mass while doing so?!? How else do you explain the fact that we can't fly through things when we come out of warp??
I don't know how much you paid your instructors to tell the agents "good things" about you but now that you are loose on the galaxy I will have to watch it because you might be trying to bump into me while you warp :-P

Edited by: Drethen Nerevitas on 21/11/2003 20:28:46 Actually, warping (afaik) in Eve works by compressing vacuum (removing all obstacles from the vacuum surrounding your ship) while sticking your specially designed overdrive (aka warp drive) into action. No obstacles=no friction. So Trekkies'B'Gone!
Oh, on the original subject: It's called Eschaton . CCP have their hands full just introducing the tech . _______________________________________________________________________

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how much I like this idea. I feel it is silly to bring it up because I think it falls in the unspoken category of "Things both Eve players and devs know would be cool and a great addition to the game but that aren't going to happen anytime soon" but since it has been, I will show my support. A corpmate and I were just talking about this last night. I mean how cool would it be if you could:
-walk around the deep dark bowels of a station and see things like refining plants, repair docks, factories and such in action. -spend some time loosing money at a local casino or engaging in high stakes games of chance with other players -as was mentioned before, catch a meal or intoxicating drink at a local bar where you can converse with other spacers or make a shady exchange of information at the dark booth in the back -Actually SEE what is in the corp hangar, complete with the giant logo of your corp adorning the walls -Attend alliance meetings in long halls where many representatives sit in front of their crest and determine their involvement, or walk out -walk around your ship and see the cargo in your hold or play games in the rec room while warping -be able to board other people's ships to have meetings in space or to forcefully remove their captain and take the ship -be able to go EV and fly along the hull of your ship.....ok, I'll stop dreaming.
Anyways, the answer to the question is: REALLY FRICKING COOL!! :-)

It's simple why you dont walk thru stations. CCP DOESNT WANT EVERYONE INSIDE THE STATIONS!!! The point of the game is to be in space. While in the future once there is a large player base this may make sense if your in a station your doing nothing but wasting time. If they were to make stations more interesting people would spend hours inside of stations the point of boring stations is to keep you out of them . _______________________________________________________ Get custom sigs and graphics done here Unforgivn Website

... Well, given current game mechanics they don't seem to be doing a good job when it comes to preventing that. ;s

I agree to some extent, but something i've noticed about the game makes me wonder. They had high hopes for the stock market, and trading. and basically it doesn't happen. What if in teh station they had trade zones, and markets where you go could interact with marketing folks. Not everyone in this game likes to be in space. Our Trade/Marketing Director doesn't own a ship and never leaves the station. He enjoys the trading part more than anything else. ---------------------------------------

Edited by: Ariell Lucinwind on 22/11/2003 00:48:29 I thought about this once, maybe twice. The thought of walking around seems like a good idea, but if I had a choice to using the current system to open the Market, Repair Shop, Refinery OR having to drag my butt all over a station to just go buy/raepair get something.
I would choose the first option as the second sucks after a while, I am limited for time when I start off and so having to run after something after I have just done a 15 jump trip isnt my idea of fun.
You should all give it a go one day, log onto Earth and Beyawned and see how it feels. The emotes and seeing someone is nice but the novelty wears off to fast. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The main reason we aint gonna see inside the stations is because for some stupid reason the inside of every station is about 100 times the size it is outside (if you check the sizes of the ships inside and then out)...
I guess CCP dont want people to know their ShipZip compression routines
Plus when we get player towns (ie mix and match stations) no 2 will be the same... and hence would be a nightmare to program I'd guess.
I'd just be happy with getting everything that CCP have promised us since day 1... and which is taking a darn sight longer than they promised. -------------------------------------------

THAT, Ariell, is an excellent point. For all the walking around in the station you did in EnB, it never really served any purpose and the way station services are done in Eve is much more efficent.
Quite honestly, I believe it will be hard for there to be a good reason to get out of your ship in Eve unless they create some value or fun to meeting others face to face. I mean, who needs to meet in person when you can talk to anyone, anywhere in the galaxy, at any time. In fact, when you have that kind of communication, who even needs to meet ship to ship unless you are doing something together or transferring items.
I think the main point I am making is about the need for personal interaction and the huge lack of it in any MMOGs that I can think of, including Eve. But at least Eve lets us kill eachother :-) In most MMOs the other players have about as much impact on eachother as paintings on a wall.

Edited by: Nariko Tenrai on 22/11/2003 09:26:30 Personally, I don't think EVE needs avatar-scale content. I also think it would be a heckuva lot of work, and we're unlikely to see it.
But oddly enough, a coworker recently asked me about this. He's watched me play EVE often after hours on the office T1 line. One night he saw a station interior and said, "That looks like it could fit a population of millions. Can you walk around in it?" He's a seasoned MMP guy, and when I said no, you can't, he just made a grumpy noise and moved on.
A few days later he asked me, "If you could walk around a station, what would you do there?"
At first I couldn't give him a good answer. "Buy and sell mainly. Go to vendors or a bazaar. Walk to the station services you get by pressing a couple of buttons now. Build things. Maybe have an apartment."
"So the same reasons you go to towns in other games. Does anyone have a reason to stay in towns in other games? Or is town just that boring place you go to sell off loot?"
"No... I can't think of any reason to loiter." He made the grumpy noise again and walked off.
But after a while I came up with a half-reasonable suggestion.
"EVE has no dungeons."
It's a fact that EVE suffers from lack of content. Player content is nice, but you really have to make an effort to find it. What EVE lacks is what SWG lacks - scripted quests and "dungeons" that you can talk a quick trip to for some profitable killing. Oh sure, there are some pirate spawns in space, but let's be honest: the toughest pirates are no challenge to a seasoned combatant, and the really big pirate spawns are out in 0.0. That pretty much cuts the best PvE content in the game off from the people who want it the most - those who don't want to get involved in the PvP aspect, and linger in Empire Space.
So what role could stations serve? All the functions of a town in the upper levels, plus you could rent an apartment or storefront. At the lower levels, they could be the equivalent of town sewers in fantasy MMPs, filled with low-lifes looking to cut your throat in the dark. In "Downbelow" you could find quests and a good PvE fight, leaving space as a pure field for PvP combat. - - - -
I have measured and described the stars, their great and countless multitude. What man has seen their revolutions and entrances? Not even the angels see their number, yet I have recorded all their names.
- The Book of the Secrets of Enoch, Jewish Pseudepigrapha
We won't talk about how many cruisers I lost this weekend, nor how many nice railguns, or T2 enhancers. We're going to skip right over that. We're going to talk about my new Raven. It is like flying a small city, and the city's only export is missiles.

There are too many stations at the moment to chance a good sized group of people meeting in one to make those ideas work. I do like the idea of exploring a station though.
Maybe a compromise.... A mix between NPC characters, Human & if you just want a quick sale, repair e.t.c. use the automated system terminal outside your ship (What we have now) & robots can do your work
Eve wasnt designed with it in mind though so I doubt it will ever happen. A few years down the line & CCP's next game, maybe you'll see something of that kind.

Actually those planets really are holograms. I've flow up to them, I mean RIGHT UP TO THE SURFACE, and gone inside the planet. NOT BY WARPING TO IT, but by simply using my afterburners to get close enough to kiss the planet goodbye. And away it went.
I would like to see planets added to the game, and take away these falsies.
A FPS would be fun, but then you'd be playing MY GAME.

having character in-statiosn would certainly be cool, also when this would be introduced, it would make sense to have planet based stations, could be that only shuttles would be allowed on-planet, or special planet->orbit haulers still as mentioned, this would change the game a lot, and the amount of data transferred too.
planets and station layouts/landscape would need to be based on a genetic code, with player added changes on top, to just be remotely bearable datatransfer wise

CCP probably has the Casino idea somewhere, cause at one patch in the beta a Casino-button appeared in the stations. Nothing happened when you pushed it, and it was gone after the next patch. |
