OK, so maybe 48 isn't "old" but I am sure it is older than most.
I did my 30 day trial, which doesn't mean I played 30 days worth by any means and when my time was up I subscribed. I've been playing MMO's since Ultima Online so this isn't my first rodeo. Here are my observations as a newb:
The game, when properly played, looks incredible. I am at that awkward "Hey look I got some ships! Now what?" stage. For once in my gaming life I need to buckle down and actually study the game and work at it.
The community has been extremely helpful. Thank you.
PVP...dunno, I tend to be a PVE type of guy but want to explore the logi-role. I know I have to work on combat skills to succeed, though.
Corporation....since I have been a major solo player in most games I think I will have to find a corp to do well. Had a few generic invites addressed to a dozen newbs and myself, but I am from the old school where you researched a guild and joined because you, yourself are a good fit. I think that was one of the things that turned me against WoW. There it became about gear scores and equipment. Hey it's great you have uber gear....but what if you're a jerk?
Graphics: I saw where some other newbs were whining about graphics. What? I think my ships are beautiful. Even my Venture.
So right now I am floundering but that will improve as apply myself a bit. The game is a bit overwhelming and even the knowledge out there is daunting. Buck up, Bud.

So, what's your question?
And I would recommend getting involved with a newbie friendly corp and getting into PvP as soon as possible. Eve is an entirely different experience once you make the plunge.
I wanna join up. I think I got what it takes to be a Citizen.

Crap... I edited it out and you answered it part of it pretty much. How hard is it to learn roles such as logi while in a corporation? To me it seems that it would be about your only chance to learn, but does the PVP scene pretty much dictate that newb logi pilots have no chance? |

EVE actually has a lot of 'older' players compared to other MMOs, so you're not alone in that respect. As you've noticed, there is a huge amount of information to absorb in this game, and quite frankly, you're not going to absorb it all. You'll find something you like, and you'll get better and better at it and specialize. You'll still be learning about the game years down the road, which is part of the appeal honestly, the depth on offer here is great. As you pointed out though, it is quite easy to drown, at least it'll feel that way.
Personally I suggest you follow the above poster's advice and get involved with PvP early, it's where this game really shines. Keep in mind I'm very biased however. In the end, do what you find enjoyable, so test out different activities and see what feels right. Feel free to message me if you have any questions, if I can't answer well enough, I'll direct you to someone who can.
Welcome to New Eden, fly dangerously.

This game has gotten younger in recent years but when I first started playing in 2009 I was one of the younger guys of everyone that I interacted with so I think this game still has a lot of older players.

Not that long ago corps could not invite players you had to apply. I liked that much better.
I also left WoW and for many of the same reasons. It sounds to me like you are a good fit for this game. In this game it's much more about what you as a person bring to the table personality wise than it is about any "attributes" or "gear" that you character has.

LoL. That drowning feeling doesn't really go away. I think you just kind of get used to it. On the plus side it's how this game stays challenging and engaging for years. |

There is no structured PvP in this game. So it's often the more the merrier.
Look at it this way. If you are going on a roam with a group of 14 guys and you are the 15th and say there are 2 other logi pilots and you are the 3rd. In that situation without you they are a 14 man fleet with 2 logi ships with you they have one more. Even if you don't know what you are doing that is one more logi ship that the enemies have to worry about.
Just the fact that you are getting targeted and jammed or just soaking up any of the Ewar takes pressure off the other two logi. So there is no need to worry about if you are pulling your weight or anything like that since you are not taking up a spot in some limited structured engagement. Ya in WoW in a 5 v 5 arena match if you are not level capped and decked out in gear and good at what you do then you are dragging the group down. In eve you are just helpful to have around. |

I have done ZERO PVP yet so wasn't sure how it was setup. Sounds like the Eveverse is a bit like the Wild West! I have mostly been mining and hunting relics which I find enjoyable but looks like my horizons will expand quite a bit. |

EVE is basically a cross between a dystopian Western and free-market libertarian wet dream.
- Everyone affects everyone else. People who harvest and build directly affect the people who prefer combat and vice versa.
- Every activity, no matter how small or PvE-ish it is, is competitive by nature and designed to facilitate conflict in some way (note: some activities will cause more or less conflict than others)
- There are few rules when it comes to PvP and warfare (see: you are allowed to do anything you can to gain an advantage as long as it does not violate the EULA)
- You are never safe... anywhere... period. Even in "civilized" areas you are at risk of "suicide gankers" (see: similar to suicide bombing, but with guns) and unwanted war declarations.
- Everyone you gain in this game, you must be prepared to defend it in some way
- Conflict does not have to be direct ship-on-ship violence... economic warfare and avoidance is a way to gain an advantage.
- EVE is more of a "process game" / "rat race" than a "get to level 100 and then you can 'stat playing' for realsies" thing. I say this because even though I started playing back in 2009, I still don't understand ALL the aspects of the game (and not for lack of trying) and often find myself being stomped on by someone with a new tactic or trick that I didn't know about.

Yeah...you're old, sorry. There are a lot of older players in EvE. If I recall correctly, enough to make the average age of EvE players in 30s.
Welcome aboard.

My name means Metal Grandfather in Dutch, a named I earned in a mosh pit. I came out and a young couple asked how old I was, at the time I was like 45. She said "You can be my Metal Grandpa!"

I didn't like mining in UO. I was there just after release for a number of years, close to your age etc. I did like smithing though, it was very social early on, until they killed that with repair deeds and all that. I did make a miner though, just a well rounded mule for the heck of it. Combat was always the thing, and it was really good there early on with just GM gear mostly, and pull out a vanq hammer now and then to smash your opponents armor to bits and watch him run away naked haha.
I had to study for UO. Not as much as EVE, but then UO wasn't as deep back then, and after some years it took a bad turn not worth playing. It's deep really became more shallow, less skill and far more item dependent etc. luck suits were just horrid.
Here it really is skill. Not just what you can skill up on a character, but what you learn with how to apply those skills to actual gameplay. That takes time, well for some stuff, mining is still mining hehe. http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/
Yeah, I didn't like WoW at all either, and a lot of the older mmo's really dumbed down with their fast travel and tailored scaled instancing, casual play etc. If you are soloing here, you can join up with some NPSI communities, find info in google EVE Online NPSI.
Only mining I really liked was in SWG, but you would set up harvesters/extractors. Only game I really sold any raw materials, mostly energy on the side for my master bounty hunter. Eventually revamped into just another dumb game though. Glad EVE hasn't gone that way yet, still seems stable for the most part.

I think they have "dumbed it down a little" but hopefully they don't go full blown Blizzard on us. |

I remember when I was only 48, we had to fly our ships both ways up the gravity well....and twice on the weekends.
To buck the popular trend, I began to Rage Start instead of Rage Quit.
...and every time I get another piece of Carbon, I know exactly what CCP is getting this Christmas.

Being 48 means you remember zork, wizardry and 2400 baud dialup modems, etc.... Likely also means you have way more gaming experience then these young whippersnappers.

And you also should draw some experience from different players.
You have to know all the options before you jump in any "do this as soon as possible" kind of advice.
EVE is not like other MMOs where you have a traced destiny to save your universe from the forces of evil you know which ones they are.
And you really should get diversified advice.

I apologize that I did not read all of this topic I just skimmed it lightly because reasons.
There are many good corps out there so expect a farily long search process. Ask a lot of questions and engage a lot of people in conversations about your expectations etc as a part of that process.
There are many game wide chat channels dedicated to helping new players so finding those and asking questions is good.
Asking questions here is always good as there are many helpful people here that will answer.
Here is a good piece written by a forum member on finding a corp that fits your needs. I have not read through it in the last month or so but I doubt much has changed. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=331341&find=unread
And EvElopedia page on terms we use around here that may be helpful. https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/List_of_EVE_Online_terms_useful_to_new_players
And a somewhat outdated but still very useful list of things for new players. http://eve.tobyrayfield.com/IGB-Bookmarks-eve.php
Helping new players is my thing in this game, so shoot me an in game mail with questions as well if you want, or don't.
Others have stated the fly dangerous thing, we prefer "Fly safe, or Don't " simply because it covers all bases.
