This is a feature request that has been made many times and denied just as many. To condense the reasoning, we at CCP actually want you to log in and play EVE, not just create an account and change skills through a browser.
Modifications to the skill training system are on the Drawing Board, but no design time has been scheduled for the modifications at this time.
So the reasoning is based on "if they log in to change their skills, maybe they'll stay for some yaarrrr"? This isn't the silliest line of reasoning I've ever heard, but I'm sure it'd make top-100. Seriously, we log in when we want to play, skills finish when they finish. If I don't feel like playing when my skill finishes, I'm not going to play whether I have to log in or not. All you've done is made the process more cumbersome.
Besides, no one would use a browser. Approximately 30s after you make skills modifiable via web interface, EVEmon will be modified to do it automatically. This is a good thing. Logging in to change skills is not really a fun game activity. At least I've never met the segment of the EVE population that really thinks that it's fun.
I think the reasoning is more that using a web interface for skills equates to having a skill queue, since it would be trivial to automate.
A skill queue is bad, because then you have character farmers only logging in to get the characters created, and doing the rest via web and eBay.

Its a nice argument, but hardly valid since CCP could easily implement CAPTCHA images as part of the skill changing process. Besides, CCP should be actively patrolling eBay to stop character sales rather than trying to prevent it by making changing skills harder.

The Fan Submissions page has been broken for a very very very long time now. And it would be nice to get it fixed. Most, sometimes all of the images can't be seen. As if they were broken links ![Sad](/images/icon_sad.gif)

Yarr ! I can speak for myself and probably a lot of others too when I say we need to have a queue of skills that can last AT LEAST for a couple of days (oh, I don't know, weekend off maybe?), regardless of number of skills trained (getting all the low-rank, low-level skills you wish you had up to "usable" level is a real pain in the posterior). Not only that, but I play when I feel like playing, and when I do that, the LAST thing I want to have to do is micro-manage skill training in the middle of combat (be it PvP of Pve, or even "economic" combat, doesn't matter as long as it's combat)... and I suppose you expect us to still do it ? The thing that attracted me towards EVE in the first place was the fact YOU can set your own time to play, whenever that is, even once a week if you're otherwise busy and just don't find the time to play, but skills would keep on training nevertheless.
You're saying that fear of character farmers is the ONLY thing that compells you to KEEP this "slavery to the skill change times" system in place ? Hmpf, I can say I am pretty disappointed. Oh well, nevermind, I can deal with it in several ways, even if it takes more time, that wasn't the point... but what is the point then ?
So then how about a "EVE-Lite client" that actually manages more than 2-5 FPS in missions on not-so-state-of-the-art machines ? Or at least some way to reduce the "regular" client's graphical details down a noth... or two... or ten ? I have the luxury of being able to play from work, from home, and when I'm "on the road" too and get in a place with 'net access. But guess what, on the laptop, all I can do is switch skills, and even that barely. Or I try to show friends with similar tastes the game, and they first see it on my machine (tbh, there is absolutely no reason to buy ANY of today's LOW end PCs for anything other than the newest PC games, and most of the new ones are utter crap anyway, so no thanks for the "new PC" thing)... imagine their disappointment when their older machines barely crawl through with their first trial account. Meh.
I don't know, do something like you did with the overview settings, but for the MAIN VIEW... options to NOT render missile explosions, backdrop clouds, large collidable objects/structures and such, less detailed or even generic ship textures and so on and so forth.
Because, let's face it, there's TWO kinds of EVE gameplay styles... the one when you're in combat, and the one when you're not.
When in ANY form of combat, you couldn't care less about how EVE looks like, heck, we'd even be happy with wireframes or icons instead of actual graphical models, as long as there is no client-side CPU-induced lag. Does "remove almost everything from overview except hostiles, zoom out as much as possible, disable all effects, etc" sounds familliar ? By the way, why the heck massively upgrading your graphics card performance only seems to not matter much, if at all FPS-wise, huh? It's almost like most of EVE is software-rendered, and anything beyond a GeForceFX5200 is overkill.
Now, when NOT in combat (or at least you don't expect to be in any large-number-of-enemies combat), it's a different story. Then, and only then, true, you DO care about how EVE looks. You care a lot actually, and quite frankly the way ships look even now is stunning, and the new models moreso. But still, as there's no quick way to switch from one to another with minimal effort, you're stuck running it however it runs best, and if you recall to enable all the eyecandy once in a while then good.

Well I have a unique situation, I am deployed to Iraq, and we are still waiting for internet in our combat housing units. Needless to say it took quite a bit just to be able to get on the forums at work. I have no way other then to call my wife and walk her through step by step changing my skills. I have quite a few days that my skills stay stagnet due to the inability of her to get to a computer with eve on it. Being able to change skills in a browser would be awesome.

For those of you wanting to change skills at work, etc. I suggest you look at the excellent UltraVNC. It's a freeware, cross-platform, lightweight, open-source, can be browser-based; remote desktop program. It works over fairly slow links (Even from mobile phones!), and I use it to play Eve from work.
Piece of advice though, don't install the video hook/video mirror driver. It's not compatible with DirectX.

Well, lots of subjects in just one thread... First of all, and to keep it on topic: Welcome Garthagk! I'm sure we will see things improve pretty fast here. Glad t20 wasn't fired also! ![Very Happy](/images/icon_biggrin.gif) I belive the skill queue is not part of Garthagk's cell work, 'cause as far as I know CCP has no plans for a web interface. About that, I'll just leave here what I said in another thread. And about what Garthagk can do: I'd love to see a better forum search, a more standard forum interface (the bolding, etc, interface is oooooooold, a select and apply would be nice...) and perhaps RSS for threads, or a better way to follow my posts (actually I have to find a topic with a reply, click on my name and click on "Read last posts of this character", annoying...) Just to name a few. I belive that the thing that some topics are repeated so often is just because there's no decent way to search for them. I hate to see like 20 posts about the same things. The forums get huge innecesarily and it's difficult to have a coherent conversation. But with Garthagk's arrival I hope things will change soon, for the better, of course! So, I'm glad to have him here. Regards,
D.

Hmm. that gave me an idea. How about somebody in the community made at skill changing script generator? Then you could just send a link to the wife and the page she opens in the browser would then contain a guide on how to change the skills. Like this:
- Hello wife - Locate the EVE Online icon on the desktop and double click it. - Type in the password 'xxxxxxxxx' and click Connect - Select the character 'Chruker' .....
And more stuff like that.
Of cause you could imagine some verbosity setting so a wife that also plays EVE (they apparently exists) would just get: 'Hey sweetie. Please start tryning my Diplomacy skill to level 5'.

Edited by: Chruker on 17/12/2006 14:30:20 Anyhoot, what I really wanted to say was that Garthagk and his possy should update EVE guides and documentation.
I just had to explain to a new comer on the test server, that the FCC scheme of making items available is not used anymore. Instead the items are seeded at many stations across EVE. Also that the PVP arena is in FD-MLJ. And finally the Singilarity name is not mentioned in the test server FAQ.
Also the player guide definately NEEDS updating. Almost all the sections are outdate. If it isn't false information then it is minor stuff like screenshots not matching. That is not a great way to welcome newcomers to the game.
So PLEASE fix the content before you start modifying the website code.

a nice feature (and not so hard to implement) si to be able from a name to gather the id.
The id permit to display the portrait of the person in a killboard for exemple. So a page where you as for the id by passing the name @ argument would be perfect !

I'm going to be the smart-ass of the group... since no one else has stepped up yet. Let's see, here's the quote: "Everybody buy a round for t20 and all his effort in the past to give us an awesome web site."
Eve-online now has (well, I thought I had seen a dev comment not too long back about totals, so someone will have to correct me on this) - I'll guess 130,000? For safety sake, we'll say 1/2 are alt accounts (flying by the seat of my pants here guys...). A further 1/2 probably are a bit young to buy "a round". Leaving you with 32,500 people who are buying a round. We'll say t20 is willing to drink 5 rounds a night on average. So, that means, at that rate, it should take him almost 18 years to get through all the free rounds of drinks. EIGHTEEN YEARS! Not to say he doesn't deserve them, but, that would be one hell of a bar tab!

It's rather nice and reassuring to see a dev admit to problems, and dictate that truthfully what they currently can and can't fix, and what their plans are. That kind of dev blog post has been *SORELY* absent since the deployment of Revelations, and it's reassuring as a player to see someone who's in a position to help, actually want to help.
Thank you Garthagk for the post, and I hope you and your cellmates (ahhahahha) accomplish what you've got lined up!

It would be nice if we could see the forums from within the game, with the IGB. Looking at how it's organized, I would guess that the forums frame in the center would be viewable, with the site menu on the left, and the ads and pictures on the right being what's messing the whole thing up.

Quote: 2. In-game browser. I know, this might be not your "cell", you do web page. But since CCP pioneered (at least i suspect you were first) in-game browser how about you finally take second logical step and make the in-game browser be able to browse official forum? This could pair up with #1 request - "lite mode" can be one designed for IGB.
Seconding this. ![ugh](/images/icon_bear.gif)

At one time I though being able to change skills via the web would be nice but if you think about it CCP is very smart in what they are doing. IF people could change skills via the web they would by a bunch accounts never go in game just create Characters to sell on E-bay. Thank you for keeping the game real :)

The item database needs faction and rare ships and modules to be included.
I babysit our killboard and for ships such as the Succubus and other faction ones, I can not get the icon unless I find one on escrow in Empire or something like that, since a Market Search does not come with any results for Succubus.
Adding icons of ships without being able to look up the ships is impossible.

On the same note i believe it is time that users of the Logitech G15 Keyboard are given support for eve. Please allow for us to utilise the LCD screen more because atm there are only 2 useful mods i have found for Eve and that is the Teamspeak Applet and the Evemon attactchement and just between me and the rest of the people reading this they dont cut the cheese.
If you have a look around on the Forums many posts have been made about this and Suggestions on what should be utilised Ie. Skill training times, Broadcasts, Ship Vitals ect. I do not imagine it would be hard for this to become supported as A large amount of games can now take advantage of the LCD screen.
Please take this into consideration. And for more info on the G15 please check out these sites.
