The EVE Online website has had its share of issues, ranging from session changes in the middle of posting on the forums, to missing pictures on the Player News Center, and others. Why is this pertinent to the blog? It is because of Garthagk and what he does for the company.
Garthagk is one of CCP's newer Devs and was brought in because of his web coding experience. He has coded some changes and resolved a number of issues, most of which are not immediately apparent. There is a lot more on the horizon and Garthagk's blog provides a road map of what is and will be happening to the EVE Online website.
Web cell revival, hallelujah!

ASP sessions are bad mmmkay. Simple solution get a couple decent load balancers that allow sticky connections so that way we get redirected to same server for each request and session state is preserved.

UPDATE THE ALLIANCES PAGE!!! Thanks.
Beyond that, it'll be great to see shiny new fixes around this site. I think the whole site is due for a facelift too, since the last time it got one was with Exodus (which was, what, two years ago now?) ----------

Quote: Forum portrait rendering Yes, I'm tired of my newer alts having no faces too. This is actually a pretty high priority for us. The reason it hasn't been taken care of is basically that we needed to wait for Revelations to come out. The code that actually generates the images is a custom client that had to be patched in to the Kali branch.
Well, the code's been done and is part of the upcoming patch this week. After that's out, we have to work with the operations cell to get a replicated file system setup so that we can have two render nodes doing the work and sharing effort. Once that's in place, we should be done.
Woohoo!

The item database update may be a pain ... but one thing we'd really appreciate is frequent updates to the Alliance section under "backstory". Like, weekly. Or daily if it can be scripted!
Looking forward to a better myeve. What's here has served us pretty well, but we all see the possibilities. All the best Garthagk!

1 word: outsource.
You have mentioned yourself that there are a lot more of us than you, and us data export fanatics love to do things like item databases for simple fun. Since we have the data, why can't someone do it for you? There are already item databases out there using the last data dump!
Also, why no go SETI on our collective butts, and distribute the special portrait rendering client to willing players. The load would be distributed to potentially hundreds or thousands of volunteers, and the results sent back to you. I'm sure there are ways for you to minimize vandalism (e.g. encrypted/signed images, no trial accounts, etc.)
Use us! - Got grief?

1. I couldn't care less about whether I'm seen as exclamation mark or there is my portrait. What I would like to see is a "lite" forum setting, that would filter out portraits, graphical signatures and text signatures too. I know, forum communities love them, but I'm old timer, I'd rather filter this stuff to make browsing faster.
2. In-game browser. I know, this might be not your "cell", you do web page. But since CCP pioneered (at least i suspect you were first) in-game browser how about you finally take second logical step and make the in-game browser be able to browse official forum? This could pair up with #1 request - "lite mode" can be one designed for IGB.
3. Downtimes and forum. I know, forum is tied to the game database and has to be down during downtime. But still, when game is down it's best time to come to forum. So how about just a read-only mode of forum during DT, from a backup maybe? Ya I know, costs too much :( -- "Say yes to pron on Concord billboards" campaing. When you migrate to ASP.NET, would you consider using web services for data feeds? It would be t3h s3x if we could push/pull information from CCP, such as:
Market Data Wallet Data Alliance/Corp Data Skill Data (I know we have character sheet, but still) Map Data (as you mention in your devblog, sovreignity, etc) Demographic Data (basically the map statistics, jumps, pilots, kills, poddings) Other Data
All these could be validated against current user account logins over a SSL layer, to prevent spamming/hammering and security.

Originally by: Garthagk Item database not updated This is almost done. We've been waiting on Revelations to stabilize. It'd be annoying if we had to render the data out multiple times, because the tools we use to do this aren't the most fun to use. (Takes a rather lot of hours to babysit the entire process, and we're not keen on doing it more than once without grave need.)
Anyway, this is presently in the works. Hopefully be done this week.
even if they did ask you to remove it, your work would still be introduced in a later stage
anyways congrats on getting into the web cell

You can always turn off pictures in your browser settings you know
And if you don't want to keep switching the setting on and off in your main browser, install an alternate browser and keep that one permanantly setup with pictures disabled. Very useful for browsing at...er...work....not that i do that at all of course.

O/ welcome Garthagk!
I just returned to EVE after nearly a year's absence and one of the reasons I've returned is the outstanding forum community here. They often whine, talk smack, and contradict each other, but by god they're ACTIVE and if you ever need answers or information it is ALWAYS in here somewhere.
Anything you can do to improve an already fantastic resource will only improve the EVE experience for everyone. Especially when we're stuck at work! Cheers!

This is a feature request that has been made many times and denied just as many. To condense the reasoning, we at CCP actually want you to log in and play EVE, not just create an account and change skills through a browser.
Modifications to the skill training system are on the Drawing Board, but no design time has been scheduled for the modifications at this time.

Quote: One of my pet projects is that I absolutely love the people who make third party sites and utilities. Let's face it, there are far more of you than there are of us, so it's best if we can get you the information you need so you can make awesome tools for everybody to use.
I would love to start supporting third party developers more.
Amen to that. I pray for updated icon sets, xml datafeed of market orders (updated daily), and a mechanism for authenticating users against CCP's servers without requiring them to reveal their password to a third party.

So the reasoning is based on "if they log in to change their skills, maybe they'll stay for some yaarrrr"? This isn't the silliest line of reasoning I've ever heard, but I'm sure it'd make top-100. Seriously, we log in when we want to play, skills finish when they finish. If I don't feel like playing when my skill finishes, I'm not going to play whether I have to log in or not. All you've done is made the process more cumbersome.
Besides, no one would use a browser. Approximately 30s after you make skills modifiable via web interface, EVEmon will be modified to do it automatically. This is a good thing. Logging in to change skills is not really a fun game activity. At least I've never met the segment of the EVE population that really thinks that it's fun.

Huh. I was thinking: I'm at work and my crap computer won't load up the game. Even if I do the IT guys might bust my balls. Hey, if there was a web interface I could at least get a bunch of small skills trained today. The point above assumes that I am able to log in at the time I wish to change my skills. Not all of us work at CCP!
