Just so you know you don't get that much useful salvage outside of metal scraps from anything short of a Battleship or a Battlecruiser. Destroyers in lv2 missions give some items but unless your doing lv4 missions don't expect to make much of a income from it.

With the most recent patch they have fixed salvage drop rates to make it a lot more worth the while, especially for relatively new players like myself. Now the most in-demand salvaged components (anything with 'circuit' in its name is used in quantity in all rig blueprints) drop much more often, even from hi-sec belt rats.
For example, yesterday I fitted a destroyer with 1 tractor beam, 3 salvage I's and some armament and killed 40 rats (gurristas) in .5 - .7 belts. I salvaged around 25 'circuit' parts and 15 of the less in-demand bits. Pre-patch I'd be lucky to come away with 4-5 circuits from the same effort.

You don't NEED one but it greatly speeds up the salvaging process. Some people are equipping 2 or even 3 but talk about stress
Typical scenario is I fly into a belt and see 3 rats. I kill them in short order and I now have 3 wrecks floating around, not necessarily in the same spot. So I fly toward the nearest one, at the same time tractor beaming the furthest away. Then while looting/salvaging you can be tractor beaming the next furthest away (up to 20km).
Yes salvagers work at a range of 5,000m but if there's loot in the wreck the salvagers won't activate. So really every wreck needs to be within 1500m so you can remove loot first. So at least 1 tractor beam is your best friend unless you like flying around from point to point all day :)

Once you get the BC, don't sell the Caracal yet. If you do missions a lot, you can fit the Caracal with tractors and salvagers, and use it to collect the loot. Bookmark the wrecks, and come back with the Caracal after completing the mission. |

I do something very similar.
I take my Harbinger on L3 missions which generally are at most 1j away from my agent (and often in the same system). After completing the mission (I do NOT end the mission so my mission bookmark remains...I almost always have loads of time before my bonus expires) I return to base and fit up 4 Salvagers and 4 Tractor Beams. I go back to the location with all the wrecks and fly near wrecks and tractor them in pulling as many as 4 at a time. While those 4 get sucked in I drive to the next wreck. While the cans are being dragged I scan them with a salvager once they are in range. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
While doing all this definitely extends the mission time I find it is pretty efficient. I also fit a tractor beam in my 8th (non-turret) hi-slot during the mission and my guns are set to optimal at 18-21km. Once I pop a rat if it has loot in it I tractor that in and unload the can while I fight other rats. My setup lets me get away without fitting a NOS in there (I almost never need to warp out). This allows for faster salvaging and just in case I end up with more loot than I can carry I can grab what I miss on the second run in.
Keeps you a bit busy managing it all but works well.
