I've done a couple missions, but sometimes, the missions lead me to a beacon I can't gate at. Is there a timer? Should I abandon it and try again?

Sorry to piggy-back, but if a mission leads to a beacon, is it assumed you activate it?

The Beacon is actually the mission gate. You can approach and activate it as you would a gate and it'll enter the mission for you. Why they can't just replace it with an acceleration gate is beyond me. -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | CCG Card Lookup |

I knew that, but the problem is that sometimes the beacon doesn't show the "Gate" option.
Is there a timer? Do you have to Lock onto it for a certain period of time?

Nope just approach within 2500m and activate it.
The "mission gate" Navigational Beacons will have the >> icon in space and on the overview.
The old style "Nav Beacon" will not show on your overview and have no icon in space, just a little flashy red light. These were used as spots to warp to, they aren't interactive. Usually Deadspace Complexes might have one of those near the entrance gate. -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | CCG Card Lookup |

Sometimes there is a >> floating in space near the beacon. The actual gate appears to be missing, but if you approach the >> you can activate it just the same. Sometimes you will even bounce off of where the gate should have been.

Alright, I see it. I've been clicking the beacon the whole time.

No this is still a beacon, but they are so tiny that the icon covers it up. If you hold the right mouse button, move the camera to the side slightly, then hold the left mouse button and move your mouse up and down, you can zoom in much more than usual. Aim it at that icon and you should see a little beacon with a little red light on it and some spinning things.
