Anyone notice on Billboards it says "This space for Rent"
Wouldnt it be cool to pay a certain amount of isk each month, say 100m a month and you could advertise on them.
For example, you could place your corp logo, along with a title, text and maybe a avatar. This would scroll the same as the faces of criminals do currently.
This would be cool to :-
Advertise your business
Sell Items
Recruit members
Make Announcments
When it comes to offensive material, we could have filters on the text and if anything slipped past and appeared offensive, any viewers offended could simply file it as a complainted in a petition, this would discourage the use for bad purposes.
Any thoughts?

This is a feature we have looked at and discussed a number of times, but the effort to impliment the ability to rent out billboards, integrate pricing based on system location, graphic/ad submission and filtering, etc. is immense and something that we think is a low priority compared to features like the graphics updates, exploration, etc.
It's on the list of things to eventually add, but not in the immediate future.

I'm yet to see a billboard out in zeros. 
Would make a pretty nifty feature but like Kieron said, it's a nice-to-have thing.

Why not try an off the shelf adrotator package. :) As a backend website developer this sort of project (the parameters you've mentioned) makes me salivate.

It seems like Billboards are much easier to kill these days, they leave a wreck aswell. And respawn (as usual) after about a minute. Or has this allways been?
Don't wanna hijack this thread, but i think Kieron answered the OP's question. that's why i pose this Question.

I understand the problems with custom ads and that implementing such a system is not a priority...
However....
Could'nt they be at least a LITTLE more interesting and dynamic? Even with developer content instead of player content in the mean time.
Maybe just some more general ads for popular ingame modules or EVE story related items, or maybe selecting the ads that are selected for EON?
Dotn get me wrong. i think they are colo and the fact you can see the RGB LEDS is amazing..but right now they seem useless and nothing more than obstacles.

From what I remember, the Dev that has put the message on the Billboards "this space is for rent" has left CCP. And the reason why no dynamic things happen with billboards, is that it would take a whole new codeing of the billboards.

yea but its probably easier to do than to completly change every billboard in the game.
person with sov could just edit the billboard like a bio and have the billboard with scrolling text.
cant be that hard surely?

The billboards are totally useless in EVE, not to mention pointless. I only wish that wasn't the case. The billboards are a daily reminder of a good idea that was forgotten.
Here are some possiblities for the billboardsin addition to the OP:
1. THIS SPACE FOR RENT, actually being for rent.
2. Being a useful tool for Bounty Hunters as they could show everybody with bounties recently in system, or the higest bounty has been in the system recently or is currently in system. As of now the bounty notices are no help, just faces.
3. The forest of jet cans near gates and their messages could be moved into the billboard. YAY! No more jet can ads!
3.5 This means 0.0 areas can boldy inform travelers that neutrals are KOS and they are unwelcome, or that neutrals are welcome, spend your money here etc. Rather than reading jet cans to see if I'm in NBSI space. (Not Blue Shoot It)
4. Naturally corps and alliances can advertise or put their own messages up there.
5. NPC's can put messages up there, like corps and organizations for storyline purposes.

Frankly kieron - It's been there for more than 3.5 years.
And it's been "not in a near future", which ofc isnt wrong perse, all that time.
Theres been plenty of *time* to look at it, just not the will.
(yes, I know CCP has been busy *all* that time as well - but still, it's the will more than the time...)
It's one of the (few) things I've personally been raving about ever since it's conception.
Like wallet export...
