... So many smaller corps/alliances augment their incomes with Empire incomes. Drying that up, and you just get big, bloated alliances made up of corps and players that only look out for themselves, and don't work together.
This post is worth reiterating for discussion. I happen to agree.
(To the OP) To say that level 4 missions gives 0.0 ratting a run for its money is stretching things. First off, your numbers for empire missions are amazing to me, yes I don't have the relevent connections books, but even I realize those numbers are more like that in low sec. You need to base your arguements on player averages, NOT on exceptions like I assume your numbers probably are.
Secondly, I have sampled both 0.0 ratting and low sec level 4 missions. I may not be in an uber faction tanked raven, but irregardless, I am not making near the same amount of isk as I did in 0.0. Especially since chances of enemy encounters in a lonely 0.0 system vs a crowded mission running hub are EXTREMELY disparate. Having to halt your mission running to deal with or avoid pirates more often also hurts your income / hour.
Thirdly, going now to Rafein's post above, if the rewards in empire/low sec continue to be so low, it's going to become more and more absurd to earn the isk to pvp with. On a game built around pvp, this is not what you want. You also don't want untouchable npc corp mission grinders, and I see that point as well. Personally, I like the balance I see in 0.0 versus level 4s at the moment.
I averaged my mission running in low sec one day. It came out to 16 million isk an hour if I remember correctly (I grant you I didn't quite know how to add in intangible isk benefits of LP). Another poster has said that empire miners have made 10 million isk an hour by catering to the price deviations in minerals. I'm not a trader so I don't know what they average. I do manufacture, but since I'm new at it, I won't say it's completely nonprofitable just yet.
I agree level 4 missions are in the say top 3 best incomes for empire.
I don't understand why you are saying my isk earning is too fast. I can get a new battleship in (*does math*) 6.25 hours, no insurance or fitting. While being at risk of scan probing pirates, which is only fair in my mind.
You will probably say my income is too low for low sec space. Well, there is definitely undeveloped potential in my career. On the other hand, give me a CNR + faction tank and instantly that number will skyrocket closer to yours. First off, that's a huge investment in future income. Second off, doesn't this speak more to how unbalanced faction tanks are in missions? I liken a faction tank to the "easy" button on staples commercials. Since I don't like cheating, I don't use a faction tank. And let me tell you, tech II tanks make for much more interesting missions, which take longer as you recharge for the next spawn / zone.
And if you step away from the Raven/Dominix, no other ship stands NEAR them for mission running due to their inherent bonii and abilities. So if you mission with a "nonstandard" battleship, your income drops further. Why would you do this? Because missions are more than just a grind for income, they can be fun. Some people forget that and rush by.
There are points in this post which lend themselves to buff level 4s, and points in this post which make you want to nerf them to the stone age. That is why, in my mind, I think level 4s are by-and-large balanced.
I'm much less happy about NPC-corp empire huggers. Macro miners. Macro mission runners. Income alts. They are mostly immune to any form of attack in empire. Suicide BS'ing the macro miners being an exception that costs a lot of isk from the suicider. People don't do that to make isk as much as to police these vermin. Wish I could deal w/ them w/o putting noobs at risk
