How about something along the lines of ORE creating a dedicated salvage vessel, with say 6 highs for tractors and salavage rigs, No turret or launcher hard points but have drone bay and a decent sized cargo hold upwards of 1500 m3.
Could have some form of bonus for salvage or tractor beam distance not limited to the 20km.
Just a thought.

I admit theres room in cruiser range for a salavage type vessel with ship bonuses to that affect, pull the turret mounts so that it can't fight though

whilst i like the idea, ny current salvage boat is armed with two assault missiles for "point defense" so i can take out low value belt rats. could also add heavy missiles if going with a gang into lowsec.
leaving it completely unarmed wouldn't be great, but giving a "salvage barge" or "Junker" type ship with a couple of weapons hardpoints (preferably missiles - and no, i'm not caldari) and/or some drone carrying capacity (say 40m3) would be great. ========================================== Iy |

While a dedicated salvager would be nice, I think its a) unnecessary and b) its more in keeping with the "junk sifting" mentality to use a converted normal ship. Salvaging is basically looking through garbage to find useful (and at the moment, expensive) stuff, having dedicated ship hulls would seem a little odd.

I like using a BS for a salvage ship. Any with 8 highs works fine. Using an Apoc I have:
6 x salvagers 2 x tractors
1 x AB (give 800 m/s speed)
2 x LCE (just over 1000 cargo bay) 6 x Nano
Arm with 2 heavy, 2 medium, and a light combat drone and it works fine.

That's about the only way we're ever going to see reasonably priced rigs.
Adding it onto my Christmas wishlist:
1.) Tractor beam for exploding mission roids so I can tow it to some macrominers 2.) AOE salvage.

Would'nt work imho, it kinda on the same lines as a hacking or archoelogy ship.
For starters the ship will have to have great tanking abilities, be a cabable fighter and at the same time.
Ideally, such a ship will have to have a good drone bay to compensate for the lack of firepower due to the high slots being filled with tractors or hacking devices.
Fail that, they could just fix the salvager so it works first time
Hmm, think i'll get me a thorax or vexor

aye... a special salvage ship would be cute.. not exactly necessary but cute - indeed, destroyers and the exequror do the job "ok".
but if there are any plans for such a t2 thingy, i'd like to see them made out of those t1 "astrometrics frigs" like the veeery cute Probe (minmatar), let them require logistics to finally give that word a better meaning ^^. as t2 shipbonus maybe a +50% salvager-range per level and/or a similar tractor range bonus (heck a tractor pulling speed bonus would be cute aswell: i always get out of range ^^). 3 low, 1 med, 4 high slots (2 turrets, no launchers)
likely not being implemented, but one can dream

I have been using the Exequror for a while but it doesn't have to many high slots to fit the tractor beams and salvagers. So i switched to a catalyst with some good expanders it will still fit more then 800m3. Together with the 8high slots and reasonable speed it's good enough. It is also able to lock a few more targets at once.

Destroyers salvage fast but the problem is still that you have to loot the wrecks first. Using Exequror atm because of its extra cargo space.

Edited by: Tricit on 17/12/2006 18:33:54 How about an item that you have to leave behind that takes 20 seconds to salvage everything.... And there can be different types. It would work like this. They are deployable and stop after filling their cargo. It will not start until all ships are gone for the length of the between activation time.
Small Tech I Cargo Capacitity 200m3 Size 150m3 Delay between activation and salvaging 20 seconds Salvage Rate 15m3/1s Radius 40km
Small Tech II Cargo Capacity 225m3 Size 150m3 Delay between activation and salvaging 15 seconds Salvage Rate 20m3/1s Radius 48km
Medium Tech I Cargo Capacity 400m3 Size 300m3 Delay between activation and salvaging 20 seconds Salvage Rate 30m3/1s Radius 60km
Medium Tech II Cargo Capacity 450m3 Size 300m3 Delay between activation and salvaging 15 seconds Salvage Rate 40m3/1s Radius 72km

Yeah, Bring that on !
I agree with Xaroth. A destroyer class vessel seems to work well for Salvage. If I could eke a little more cargohold and speed out of it then it would be perfect. Admittedly I havenÆt rigged one yet. I am a bit apprehensive about attaching that much value to a relatively fragile ship. I have also had some capacitor shortage when running it full bore. As a Minnie this concept of numerous high slot using modules is confusing.
CanÆt fly Gallente but I would have thought speed and highslot limits of the Exequror would place it behind a destroyer as a salvage boat.
My features list for a salvage ship I think would be: 1) highslots 2) cargo 3) speed 4) cap (including cap needed for modules)
I havenÆt decided where ôincreased chance of salvage retrievalö should sit on the scale. First thought would be merely to duct tape on another salvage module.

A speciallist ship with ample high slots which for the most part cant be used for weapons, maybe 2 out of 6/8 can be weapons.
Would need a salvage range bonus, as well as bonuses to other things, say hacking/arch etc making it also an exploration ship.
No extra tanking abilities but has a large cargo hold to compensate so can be a loot collect also.
I dont understand why people want ships that can tank/attack too. Its a profession in itself and as such it should be a standalone ship, if u wish to mix and match ur combat ship for salvage etc then so be it, but u cant expect to do everything to a high standard in the same ship. Swapping ship to have a much more effective salvage/hacking/arch ship isnt an issue for the benifit involved.

Typhoon BS. Solo rat and salvage at the same time!
4 launchers and large drone bay. You'll have four remaining high slots to use for Salvagers and Tractor Beams.
Armor tank will let you rat in 0.0, and the launchers and drones deal enough damage against BS rats.

I tried using a Minmatar ship for salving, but the modules got confused and thought my ship was the Salvage. Moments later I found myself in a pod next to a cargo container with a salvage part.

I like the idea of a salvage barge. Call them Scows or something.
Use the procurer, retriever and covetor hulls. Twice the high slots and a bit more cargo capacity. Or perhaps the same number of hi slots and develop a strip salvaging module.
I know you can use a cruiser and fit salvagers etc but what's wrong with adding something new?
By the way, I have never salvaged anything and have no intention of it. I just like the idea of it. Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. |

I don't think strip salvagers or AoE salvagers are required at the moment.
However a ship that gets a bonus to salvage duration, salvage range, or salvage probability; does indeed make sense. The T1 mining frigates (Bantam, Navitas, etc) don't have a T2 variant yet, and they would be paper-thin hulled.
Though I believe the ORE barges could make a fairly decent hull. Though as people suggest, without a dedicated ship-based salvage module, it makes little sense to use these as a basis.
Anyway, it's a juggle isn't it? Are tractor beams synonymous with salvage modules? Some would argue yes, but since tractor beams won't work on unowned wrecks/cans, there is little point for most salvagers having tractor beams installed.
T2 versions of T1 mining frigates 4tw. Would at least give a purpose to those who have trained Mechnaic/Survey to 5.

Personally I would like to see further advancement in Tractor Beams than a Rig Ship. Rigging is fickle, alot of ppl love their Rigging Destroyers but that just wouldn't work for me because I'm out in 0.0 and a Destroyer would get popped in seconds if a spawn landed on top of me.
But, if there was a further advancement in tractor beams, that would be great. Getting 20km from something in my Apoc can be quite a pain sometimes. I would love to see a "Large Tractor Beam I" that has a range of 30-50km. !!~JOIN THE SALVAGER CHANNEL~!! --------- http://www.gorgeousgamers.com/users/Matt |
