A couple of weeks ago I was getting a little bored in empire, so decided to go out and look for some pirate action. I plotted a course of around 30 jumps through lowsec, grabbed my Dominix and decided I would let good fortune take care of the rest. Some 20 jumps in I enter Tararen (0.3) and there are 2 pilots in local, a quick look at their profiles reveals they both have negative sec status and are probably rotten scoundrels. I warp to the first belt and start working my way through, then my local chat suddenly lights up, I see one of them saying ‘I have him on scanner now’ the other responds with a creepy ‘hehehe’. Bringing up my scanner I see a Cerberus. It appears that they are hunting me. I warp from the belt to the next gate and find an Astarte sitting there waiting for me. I figure taking on an Astarte and a Cerberus would probably be bad news, so I jump through the gate and the Astarte follows. Decloaking on the other side he targets me and scrams me. The gate guns go live. I hit the nos, scram, and guns and turn around to approach. His drones are being popped one by one by the gate guns. My Ogre II’s rip into him and he is going down fast. He says ‘Nice’ in local before his ship pops. I loot his cargo (tech 2 stuff worth about 15mil+) and warp away just as his buddy enters local. The Cerberus decided not to pursue.
2 weeks later and I’m back out looking for pirates. I’m moving randomly around lowsec when I enter Hagilur (0.4). The place is crawling with lowlifes. Hitting the belts I decide to try my luck. Sure enough, the very first belt I jump to has a flashing red Thorax. He has some corp mates in local, but chooses not to engage. I ignore him and move on. Next belt has a Cyclone, same corp, who chooses not to engage. The next 2 belts are clear. Jumping into the last belt I see the thorax and the cyclone waiting for me. Bingo. The thorax quickly has me scrammed. I release my Ogre II’s and scram him back, they quickly rip through his shields and start into his armor, When WAIT, what’s this?? A carrier! And another Cyclone. Oops. The thorax bites the dust, I get a Cyclone to armor, I have a scrambler on the carrier, and he’s trying to Get out of scram range, unfortunatly I don’t have my overview setup to show fighter drones, and my hands are shaking so much they are really only useful for making milkshakes. Not long after that my ship goes pop. Guess I should pay more attention to who’s in local.

That second fight could probably have been pretty interesting, if not for the carrier. Keep hunting anything that moves (engages).

I was shocked to say the least.
Being more used to living in 0.0 space where carriers are used in their rightful fleet support role. Still, you live and learn.
BTW.. what sort of drones would be most effective in taking down fighters? Would you use lights or mediums?

You find targets by warping to each and every roid belt?
Ever use the scanner? You just might go from being bumbling and predictable to being precise and deadly
Don't want to sound rude or like I'm flaming, its just that using the scanner would have saved your domi.

Probably not one of the times where the pirate hides in station.

It was a case of looking like an NPC'er and letting the aggro find me. If I was looking to shoot down miners and ratters than yes, the scanner would be the way to go.I was under the impression that pirates don't sit in one belt. I have to admit though.. seeing a carrier on my scanner might have made me think twice..

Very entertaining mate, cool story. Nice to see that there are still times when the hunters become the HUNTED.

Edited by: Portios Smith on 20/12/2006 00:59:10 I thought you couldn't scramble carriers. I am sure of this, it saved my life once when I tryed to scram what looked like a BS on overview, turns out it was a Nyx and its inmunity to EW allowed me to jump cause I didn't aggro.
As for him not using scanner, well most pies dont sit on belts. they are on planets or Safe spots scanning. Belt hoping triggers their Cat instinct to chase anything that moves.

I'm not sure about this having never tried it, but I know that this is true for dreads in siege mode. It got my helios blown once when I was trying to get on the killmail so I uncloaked and tried to scram... "immune" it said, so I stayed uncloaked waiting for it to unsiege and try to warp... in the meantime a tempest thought it would be nice to two volley me before he went down himself

hmmm.. I will need to check my gamelog when I get home. It is entirely possible that I got confused in my state of panic. I thought I had him scrambled.

The Nyx is a mothership and therefore immune to EW. Normal carriers are however NOT immune. Just very hard to jam =P Captain Ladel Teravada Chief of Naval Intelligence, CAIN
