I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that in EVE PvP, I could lose everyhting I have worked so hard for in an instant, but MAN I get a heck of an adrenaline rush when in combat. Shaky hands, pounding in the chest, mild dizziness...wohhoo! It's like being next in line at the scariest ride in the amusement park. Anyone else get all buzzed up like this when fighting? come on, be honest...

i do.
but could have something to do with the fact that combat is unnecessarily fast, too?!?

It's wierd.
I get this wicked adrenalin rush during the warp-in but as soon as I see the first enemy ship I enter this amazingly calm "zone" for the duration of the battle until I'm warping out or the enemy has gone.
PvP has ruined Eve for me - nothing else will do.

Its nothing like it used to be, but yeah, its still a rush.
I might have been spoiled though... my first PvP encounter was as part of a ~25 ship fleet that warped into a m0o gate. now that was a fun way to lose a ship

I used to get the same buzz when going after someone in Ultima Online, but I think in Eve it's more intense because you're more likely to be unprepared for it and the stakes are higher. There was no equivalent to the 'I'm in an indy full of bistot running back into empire space and all of <insert pirate corp here> just showed up in local' rush in UO.
Sure, everyone supports saving Einstein's brain, but when you put it in the body of a Great White Shark, suddenly you've "gone too far". |

No I find combat in EVE to be a bore thus I don't partake. I prefer combat games that allow an element of skill from the player to enter into the equation rather than simply hit the attack key and then sit back and watch.
And to head off the flamers that will say "there is skill" well bla bla bla, thin what you like its ship rigging(a skill) and skill training(time) and in most cases hoping the other guy doesnt' get loaded before you pod him. LOL If you can catch me you can have me. |

Mhmm... if you actually did partake, you'd notice quickly that just hitting your attack key and sitting back gets you in the pod rather promptly...
... but whatever, it's as good excuse not to partake as any. ;s

You mean the person with the lowest ping?
You need alot of patience to pvp in Eve. Alot of time is spent analysing your enemies movements and trying to pre-empt their moves. PvP in Eve is frustrating at time, but it just makes the kills that much sweeter.

yes skills and ship loadout is 75% of it, but ive seen people with both of those in top condition and still get owned by some blackbird because they decided to come to a complete stop while leaving their MWD on auto repeat and forgot to reload turret bays 1-4.
id say 50% of all the fights ive seen/been involved in have been won/lost due to player decisions and NOT skills.

Edited by: Tobruk on 24/11/2003 23:22:38 There is definately a rush for me. Probably because I stand to lose millions in ship, equipment, insurance, clone and implants everytime I lock another BS.
Edit: Im with Josh on this one, PvP is really the only thing keeping eve alive for me. ----------------------------------------------

If the PvP combat engine actually worked, then maybe, but if I want real space based combat, then I play SFB Command 2. Now that has a complex yet working space based combat engine. Eve combat, gank those that are lagged out or watch them run away, unless they out number you, then you get ganked if lagged or run away.
So no, until CCP actually puts a combat engine into the game with working combat mechanics, this does not do much for me.

It's a rush. While Eve is a better game I liked the PvP in Jumpgate better. Perhaps because it took a little longer to kill someone in Jumpgate.

It's good if you are not frustrated by lag, that is.
Way to win is clear cool thinking, and not to be blinded by excitement.
But it's definitely not as fun as the late lamented Allegiance, which still tops my list of the most intense space battles ever. Me ridding shotgun in a turret on a cruiser with three other players, surrounded by escorting player flown scouts (used to heal the cruiser) and fighters, breaking out of a wormhole for a deathride against an enemy base, surrounded by player flown fighters and interceptors desperate to defend their base to the end. Alas the attack failed---the base still had a few notches of life before your cruiser blows up, leaving four pods in space. But heck I got two or three interceptors with my turret guns.
Or, after evading patrols and the radar screen by hiding in the asteroids in your stealth bomber, your BIOS Steath Bomber come out and decloaked for a death run against an enemy base. The channels go crazy as your opponents called for fighters and interceptors, and fighter after fighter comes out of the base. They're pounding you now, your armor is getting thin, but you're trying to close the distance to get within range before you can unload your torpedoes against the enemy base. The salvo blows up the base, just as a second later, you are podded. Then some gripey player decides to give you some extra punishment for your deed, and blows up your pod. But the death was worth it, and the channel was filled with congratulations from your team members.
Those were the days...
Nothing beats a highly cooperative team based game for sheer intensity. The longest battles I've played ran for 3 to 4 hours and at the end of the game, my hand was trembling at a sweaty joystick.

I must agree with the topic subject. I've never experienced such a rush as I do from combat in Eve (ok, perhaps my life is a bore, but so what) Mainly after it's all over I feel how much adrenaline there is in my body, I almost run in circles (my flat is really small) to calm down!
Much of this is probably because I have not been in that many PvP situations, only a few 1vs1 and a couple 1vs2 not counting the odd get-blown-up-by-camper experience or similar. I guess one gets used to it.
Can't but think that all people who play the game only to score easy kills at a jip or similar (you know who you are) miss out on something! Sure, it might be somewhat booring doing those trade-runs or agent-missions, but once someone jumps you or you jump a pirate or two, and you get to slug it out in a fair fight...! The suprise and sudden change from relaxed cruising to 100% alert is great!

It has been sort of a build up for me. Back in the "day" when I was risking all mining on my own in 0.2 in a merlin.... I got a rush. Then shifting bistot through a choke point. Rush Finally the 1st pod kill (crap miner in a 0.0 but still...) Even getting ganked twice by Tank was a rush of sorts. No other game has EVER made me feel this way. Hah even when playing league matches with my bf1942 clan does not compare (And yes this is an alt hehehe)

Combat is usually long periods of waiting in cold sweat, with short periods of extreme, exhilirating excitement.
I've never played a game that gives quite that much of a rush...at least not all the time.
On the other hand, when the combat never happens everyone feels let down. And that happens all too often as well. ------------------------------------------- "My main griveance with the Caldari state was that once I had finished my work for them, they wanted me dead."

PvP in eve is certainly exciting but more often than not its disapointing. Once we get a fix to the warp/jump in lag, gate to gate jumping, removal of insta dock/warp and ship tracking then PvP will move into a new level. More important than Tech 2 IMO....I cant wait.

nothing like the rush you get when the threat indicator fails to activate the 2nd time you see your enemy and you don't know he's there

I get a rush when I am alone in a system and I am about to warp to a gate and enemy force show up. I have to decide either to make a go for the gate or find a safe spot and figure something out.
I NEVER log out. I don't fight, cause hey, I am a scout and trader, not a combat jock (although i have purchased many a combat related skill and am training like crazy to help Oracle out more in Curse). So I get a rush, yeah, from AVOIDING fights. Heh. --------------------------------------------------

it is unbelivable, after ive been in a combat situation (and survied) im usually up in the blue for a couple of days afterwards. one of the best adrenaline rushes ive had was once when a buddy of mine was stuck in a system against 5 pirate scorps, i was flying a thorax and he an apoc. i decided to make a suicide attack into the system and take the fire on me to try and let my buddy escape. i cant descibe the feeling i had when i jumped into the system, for sure i belived i was gonna die. however to my suprise when i jumped in the pirates wasnt at the gate. we played cat and mouse for about an hour untill the scorps decided to leave the system. both me and my friend had survived, that was an amazing feeling.

Yes I know what you mean. I often hang around for way to long against superior odds. Any sane person would have warped ages ago lol. Still its possibly because Im normally stoned when entering battle and want to just be with everyone and love them a bit for as long as possible :)
