decided i would try a domi on level 3s...
so i am wondering if it is worth trying to take down cruisers and slower frigates in level 3s with heavy drones?
thanks!

Ogre IIs will make short work of cruisers... but why dont you just put some meds and lights in your bay too, its not like you dont have 375 m3 of drone space to work with

You probably have higher drone nav skill than I do, but I don't find heavies all that useful in lvl 3s. Mediums may do less damage, but they get to the targets faster. For a while, I was packing 5 lights, 5 mediums and 2 heavies. If I sent 3 mediums and 2 heavies at a ship, the 3 mediums pretty much ate the target before the 2 heavies even got there. Except for a few missions, you're not going to see any battleships in a lvl 3, so mediums are more than enough.
Sentry drones might be useful, but it means you have to sit perfectly skill and then scoop them up when frigates get too close.

I personally like lights the best for missions. When you factor in rate of fire they do just about as much damage as mediums, but they have better speed. I find this important when they pull agro and you have to reel them in before they get destroyed.
IÆve just watched so many heavies and mediums get blown before I could get them out of harms way.
Now for ratting in 0.0 or PVP the bigger drones are probably what you want.

I mostly send the heavies out afterwards if there is a structure to destroy for the loot. They will do that job much faster.

Referring to structure destruction:
Some of the structures can be ridiculously difficult to kill. (As in 20 minutes of continuous shooting difficult). They can however be worth it - the best drop I've had was a beta expander worth about 10 million.
But the drops aren't always this good, and you may not want to expend a couple of thousand rounds of hybrid ammo finding out.
Solution? Pack lasers - the heaviest you can fit without gimping your tank - and multi crystals. Use these for shooting at structures. This assumes, of course, that you have the skills for them.
Also, pack some sentries or heavies for the same purpose. Which do more damage depends on your skills in sentries and heavies - with the same skills the damage is about the same IIRC. Sentries have the advantage, however, that they start causing damage immediately and you can scoop them straight away when you're finished.
Incidentally, I am NOT suggesting that the lasers get used while you are still fighting, unless your cap skills are first rate. When you can switch off your tank - that's when the lasers start firing.
I have managed a couple of the easier level 4 with this setup - particularly Duo of Death - so level 3 should be a cakewalk. (Duo of Death has a stronghold that must have a hundred thousand hitpoints - it takes forever!)
As for which drones to kill the rats - use mediums, tailored to the rats you're fighting. Level 3 usually has no interceptors - they really need lights to kill, as the mediums can't keep up.

I use Ogre IIs with 1 smartbomb and never have problems. Mostly I just aggro eveything then leave the drones to do there work while I loot and salvage. Passive shield tanking guide click here |

T2 mediums rip apart even level 4 missions, though they do take a while to get through battleships.
For level 3's... definitely stick with mediums.
