What are the consequences of stealing a secure container and then hacking the password (with a codebreaker?). Do the police ships fire upon you straight away or do you just lose standing?
I assume the containers' owner has rights to shoot you is this correct? Will they always have rights to shoot you afterwards?

Im not exactly the best person to answer you this considering im new to the game, but what I understand about stealing containers is that you will be flagged and the container owner may open fire against you without Concord attacking him.
In resume, you steal my container, I may kill you without having concord problems. Twice the pride, double the fall. |

you can't steal anchored containers and unanchored containers have no password and don't get you flagged.

If the container is anchored and passworded, you can't do anything to it, except blow it up. You need to be in low sec or war dec the owner's corp to shoot it though.
If you take stuff from inside an unpassworded secure container, you'll be flagged to the owner and their corp for 15 minutes. They can shoot you and you can return fire, but you cannot shoot them first. You lose no security status or standing for this.
If you somehow manage to find an unanchored secure container, scoop it with an industrial (don't take the loot out first), then get it back to station and repackage it to get both the can and the items inside. Can scooping does not trigger flagging or standing loss.
Codebreakers, as another poster said, are for particular mission cans in COSMOS missions only.

The others make some valid points... just thinking, though...
Secure Containers can be placed in 0.8 (and greater). Just not anchored or passworded.
Does nicking from a Secure Can (when it's unsecured, and in 0.8 or better) activate the "can-thief" flag?
Just wondering if jet-can rules are different, or if any can follows the rules. _______

Yup, it triggers "can-thief" flag, or it did when I tested it (about when Blood was released).
However if you see a new secure can in space in 0.8+, then just get your indy and scoop it instead.
The only real difference between 'jet can rules' and 'secure can rules' is that you can't scoop jet cans.
And in answer to your next question, wrecks follow secure can rules, in that looting triggers flagging but salvaging doesn't.

Interesting. So mining into an unanchored container is actually less secure than jetcan mining because the container can be scooped up without flagging. |

Edited by: Sovelis on 20/12/2006 14:48:15 Correct. Plus the fact that a Giant Secure Container only has 3000m3 whereas a jetcan has 27,500m3

Minor nitpick: a Giant Secure Container takes up 3000m3 cargo space but actually holds 3900m3.

When you use a jettisoned container to hold items instead of your ship hold (right click on an item in your cargo hold while in space, jettison).
Since jetcans hold up to 27500m3, it is far more efficient to use them as temporary ore holders when mining rather than your ship's hold or secure containers.
Of course they're completely unsecure and anybody jetcan mining should expect to be harassed unless they take suitable precautions.
Edit: typos

Marine I new that about the Giant...I was just testing you.
But even with teh 3900 it still is not worth it to me. I'd much rather only have to dump every 27,500m3.

However, salvaging will require that the wreck be looted first.

But, if you can't anchor in .8 or higher space, how come my can was stolen and I can't scoop up other peoples' cans?

All the anchored cans you see in 0.8 and above were anchored prior to the new rule stopping anchoring in such sec systems.
Why CCP haven't deleted these old cans is a question for them.
