Don't know if anyone thought of this yet, but read on, miners.
This technique was thought of on the spot during my ill-fated attempt to help a miner victim of ore thieving. It's very simple: when you mine, logon with your alt that's in an NPC corp, and have him stanby in a safespot where your hauling indus is. When ore thieves come and transfer your ore to their can, wait until they leave, and have your alt "steal" your ore back. That way, he gets the flag to them, and you're free to go get your indus in full safety, pickup your ore, get back to station, and hopefully, jump in a combat ship and deal with the nuisance (make sure he doesn't have buddies around first...). Worst that is going to happen is that your alt will have his noobship blown out of the sky and you may lose your combat ship if you go after the thief.
Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Edited by: SuperJyinn on 20/12/2006 20:02:44 With all the time and multiple account it takes to pull that off you can mine 2 jet cans worth of ore. Waste of time and effort. An ore thief can just swoop in his cargo ship, steal 9k m3 worth of ore and just leave. If the ore thief is transfering your ore to his ship chances are he is not flying an industrial but a tougher combat ship.

Wont work, Miner's cant be assed to help themselves. They where warned time and time again pre- can flagging about the risks and cried for this system anyway. They will continue to get griefed, and continue to whine

Easier.
Just have a friend in a combat ship drop a can for you. Mine into that can. When the thief steals ore (If he didn't check the owner of the can) your friend warps in or uncloaks and obliterates him as he was expecting nothing or your measly barge to defend...

what alianna said, no chance at all, a good ore thief play smart and safe and will use the flaging system to their own benefict
what's better? to steal you and loot the stuff from your ship or just to steal you?

1)- If the thief is flying an indus, of course there's nothing you can do about it. This trick is more for use against thieves in combat ships.
2)- If you have buds that can blow them to kingdom come, that is even better than my solution, but sometimes you don't have backup.
3)- Now, if miners can be arsed to use this trick, well, too damn bad for them.

Plan B. On your hauler alt, also have a combat ship that is standing by at an SS. Mine into hauler's can.
Miner has warp scrambler in mids (what else were you gonna use em for?)
Or, you know, leave empire.
I needed more isk, so I took a risk. I mined some ore then fled once more. I'll return to the core to escape the war! |

they did not ask for this system ! They mearly asked for ccp to make the ships, cans, stations and modules of anyone who touched their ore to be deleted along with their account, bank account, home, wife, dog and car.

Easy way, have a spare account with a tackling frig. When the theif warps in target them immediately, if they try to take from the can, scramble them and blow them away.
Won't work well if they have a decent combat setup, but you can always destroy their indy if that's what they were flying.
Better yet, train the alt and have them sit there in a hauler. Jet can mining is going to get your ore stolen at some point.

Edited by: Nazgu''l on 21/12/2006 09:59:43 I have a better tactic. Equip your barge with Scrambler and Webber. When thief will come for your ore and will get flag, scram/web him and release your drones
EDIT: You can pull this out only if you are in Elite Barge, since T1 Barges have only 1 mid slot, but I guess you can still put there scrambler.

I cant stand the people who act like miners have it worse now that can flagging is in than they had it before. Miners now have the OPTION to fight back, if they CHOSE. Before, they had no choice other than a fraction of the choices they have now.
I still have yet to see miners whining in bulk about can flagging. Yet I DID see miners posting DAILY about ore theives before the can flagging system was introduced. Please note that modern miners posting about ore theives != miners lamenting the can flagging changes. --- For the swarm! |

What Kumu said is the best way. Have a friend in a Domi drop a can for you. The sight of a Domi targetting the thief and spitting out 5 ogres or hammerheads should run off most noob thieves.
If you're in a corp, just make sure some corp mates are somewhere nearby and have THEM switch the can back in something that can fight. That way you don't get flagged in your mining ship.
If you're alone, just don't mine more than what you can pick up in a single trip with your hauler if anybody else is in the same system.
Or, if you're in an elite barge, stick on a webber and 2pt scrambler and 5 T2 hobgoblins. If some idiot in a frig/shuttle/hauler flips your can, pin him down and gank him. Then leave, because he might have something bigger nearby.

Edited by: Nash Leigth on 21/12/2006 16:18:32 Edited by: Nash Leigth on 21/12/2006 16:16:45 With alt the thief just kills the alt, flips the can back, and comes back in a hauler and scoops your ore. Or his second account or buddy comes along in a hauler.
You can mine with someone around in a ship setup for pvp, but even that might not help you. An ore thief can scan the belt and outfit to take on that pvp ship sitting next to you, which will be much more fun compared to taking on mining barges and haulers (in low sec you have to search for targets and here the target is just sitting in belt and waiting for you). This approach will work against thieves that go for the ore and not the gank. Some are more insterested in ganking whatever ships you have to offer.
If the ore thief aligns to warp prior to taking stuff out of your can, good luck gaining lock on target with your mining barge before he warps even if he's in a hauler.
Best protection against ore thieves is having someone continuously haul your ore out as you mine it. So if someone flips your can, you don't stand to lose very much.

Coming from an amateur ore thief/high sec ganker... Worst. Idea. Ever. If I have flipped your can, and you use your noob ship to flip it back, I will simply kill the noob ship and flip the can again. Since I will be annoyed by your use of this tactic, at that point I will either bring in my hauler alt and take all the ore, or will simply shoot the can as you are watching. And if you decide to bring in your fighting ship and try to kill me - bring it on! This is exactly the outcome I want. And the bigger your fighting ship - the better (since it will drop better loot, and you will be more hapless in it). Since you are a miner, most probably you will have significantly less fighting skills and experience than I do. Thus, it is almost certain you will get killed - providing me with some nice loot. And if I were to suspect you are more experienced than me (say, a 3-year old member of a known PvP alliance, who is for some reason MINING in a Hulk with 5 Hammerhead IIs circling around), I would not even mess with you in the first place. There are plenty of softer targets around. My advice? Pay the man. Convo the thief, tell him that you know that he is trying to make you flagged and gank you, and offer him some ISK for his troubles. Most thieves will take the money and go away.

nah, don't listen to Quilan here what he means to say is that you need to bring out your biggest ship loaded on the most expensive modules you have and the best drones out there - and you are guaranteed 100% success

^^ What she said. The best setup I recommend against a thieving Ishkur would be a Domi with all Large Modal blasters in high slots, and as many as possible Heavy T2 kinetic drones. But don't bother with Large Armor Repairer II - small ships don't do a lot of damage since they are so small, and, besides, you can fit something more expensive in these low slots.

ore theft is pretty low grade stuff confined to those with little imagination.
On the other hand they make an amusing diversion when killing them.
Often it is peoples first taste of a "pirate" and smacktards.
As an anti-pirate recruitment tool ore thieves are wonderful things.
I dont want them to ever leave the game and as most of them never get out the pirate kiddie-pool they are no real danger to anyone but themselves.

I think you're gravely mistaken... how do you think ore thieves got their yellow flag ?
Ore theft is often the first step in a criminal life. Engaging thieves is the best way of making them addicted to combat and piracy in general.

Best way i found is to get a friend in a combat ship to jettison a can for you and then mine that one. Now if someone steals from your can they arent flagged to you, they are flagged to the combat ship which can then simply warp in, scramble, and destroy them.

This won't work - ever. If your friend with a combat ship has a good ship, and good skills to fly it - why is he assisting you with mining in High Empire? It is most certainly not profitable for him (because he is not ratting, or missioning, or ransoming pods). It is also not fun at all. He has a chance of enaging a thief, but this is one of the more boring ways of ambushing and flagging people. Of course, if your friend flies a Domi with Large Modal blasters, and some Tech II heavy kinetic drones, he migh have a chance. He just has to remember that Nos and armor repairers are a waste of grid - and the more expensive his setup is, the better.

... you're just asking for ore thieves to come in fully outfitted t2 battleships to steal your ore, aren't you It will most definitely turn off the younger thieves, but a more experienced player with an older character will just see it as a great opportunity for high sec piracy. In the end, you might lose more money than that ore was worth.
Quilan has a point. You cannot always rely on combat character sitting in high sec belt watching over your barge for hours and hours. You cannot always depend on corp mates being around. Not only will you have to split the profit with the guard (which is not that great for high sec ore) but imagine how boring it must be for the poor guy to sit in this belt in this shiny ship, ready for combat, and observe your mining lasers go on and off. You will have to either always ask a friend to sit with you, every mining session, or train a second account, which will take some time to get good combat skills.
If you want to mine in peace, get a hauler regularly taking ore out of that can right as you mine it. Second hauler account is very easy to train and any newbie in corp can do it too. If a thief is annoying you way too much, convo him and try to make a deal for him to go away.
