I've been mining a lot lately since I can do it with only a moderate amount of attention to the computer and I have gotten my skills to where they're all green for the Veldspar Mining Crystal, but I can't figure out how to fit the bloody thing on the barrel of my Mining laser II.
So give a guy a hint and tell me how to mine even more Veldspar, please?

They're only for modulated strip miners (i.e. only special mining lasers can use them).

Thanks GC. At least I got it from the corp hangar and didn't buy it. William McC racken Captain of the Aislynn Star Owner of The Cr acked Hull, The Rusted Tub, and The Bonny Lass |

If you can use the crystal, you should be able to get ahold of a modulated mining laser and fit that. However, it has been my experience that the mining lasers that take the crystals are really only effective once you can fit the strip miners. With the 'normal' mining lasers the amount of cargo space they take up, and the rate at which the crystals degrade makes the efficiency drop off quite a bit. It is a good thing to have the skills for the crystals if you plan on getting into a barge with T2 miners, so its not like you made any mistakes, I would just suggest sticking to the miner 2's for now however. -=^=-

How much better are the deep core miners over standard miner IIs anyway?

Well mining lasers that can take crystals will only be able to be fitted to mining barges (currently).
Strip I = 540 ore units per cycle Mod Strip II = 360 ore units per cycle Mod Strip II + T1 Crystals (62.5% boost) = 585 ore units per cycle Mod Strip II + T2 Crystals (75% boost) = 630 ore units per cycle ___________________

Deep Core miners are meant for Mercoxit mining. Don't bother using them for anything else.

Actually the MDCML is about as effective at mining as a miner 2, it just uses a 2 minute cycle like the strip miners, meaning you got to be more careful of cargo overflow. Generally modulated lasers aren't worth the investment unless you do use them with crystals, and if you decide to use crystals, you'll generally have improved your mining yield any other way so should already be on mining barges.
Another requirement for crystals, apart from them only fitting in a modulated laser, is that they have skill prerequisites. I believe you need to have astrogeology up to a certain point to use mining crystals for ore up to Kernite, and need to have the corresponding ore processing skill up to use crystals for ore only found in low sec or 0.0. |
