How about a way to block local? Not the who's-in-system part, but the text part. I'd love to be able to ignore the local smacksquad while still being able to effectively search for hostiles.
Any objections?

Why not simply ignore the activity in the local? Way easier then have CCP rewrite the code for something thats after all is not bug ridden...

pewpewpewpewBOOOM! has a point.. although i would much prefer it if they got rid of local all together, at least in 0.0 or low sec anyway... its resonable to have local chat channels empire.

AAGGGHH I HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAY THIS!!
How are you so blind to the fact that this would kill the game?!?!
People wouldn't pvp anymore, cause they wouldn't know where to go to find people. You could be searching a system for 20mins with nobody in it! People wouldn't mine or npc in low sec anymore unless they had people covering every gate (oh what fun!). Fleets finding other fleets to fight would take longer then it already does (can take up to two hours to get a fight anyways). All solo pvp in low sec and 0.0 would be gone. All solo pve in low sec and 0.0 would be gone.
Remember this is a bloody game, not a second life where everything has to be realistic. I could go on forever giving you whiners soo many examples about how removing local in 0.0/low sec would kill the game, but there's just too many.

This is the first PvP game I've played that had a list of nearby players. Didn't see the lack of it hurting PvP in any ways on other games really. Gotta admit though, it's handy as hell for scouting out noobs and knowing when to bail from the system or log.

Every point you make is countered by the scanner. Jump into a system? Just tap "Scan" and 14.5 AU in every direction is instantly revealed to you. System bigger than 14.5 AU? Fly to a distant celestial object. The active and aware non-agressors can remain safe while the agressors aren't so easily given away by an all knowing local.
I believe more people would move into low sec and possibly 0.0 with this change. Just think, you could mine in your little dark corner in complete solitude and if you were aware (via scanner) a quick warp to a safespot or station would keep you from harms way. Eventually you could even get a cloaking device to hide with and nobody would be any the wiser that you were chipping away at those roids.
Sure, there'd be some big changes to the way people play the game, but "break?" Certainly not.

Which is different from today's ability to "quickly warp..." when you see people enter the system thanks to the local listing... how? Other than having to repeatedly hit the 'scan' button all the time while you remain undocked to get the same functionality, but 'tis hardly an improvement.

Well, that's exactly the point. It's nearly identical for the non-agressor (albeit a bit more work), but it is a vast improvement to the person who would rather go unnoticed to his/her prey. On the other hand, if you do a bit more work as the non-agressor you can be completely invisible, and as such your would-be attacker would move on without any gatecamps/station camps/log-off tactics/etc.

The existence of a local channel is actually supported by the game's backstory. (A chronicle; I don't remember which.)
More on topic, local has existed since the beginning of EVE with not much complaint. But in recent times, people have been calling for local's removal from the game. Why? Most of the reasons I see are that it was never intended to be an intelligence tool, that it would add more challenge between hunter and hunted (as well as more work), and finally so that player B (defender) would not know that player A (attacker) had entered the system (a throwback to the second point).
I just stated the obvious, but I want to pose a question. If CCP saw local chat as a problem (in any way), don't you think they'd have considered removal already? From CCP's perspective, there is absolutely no reason or excuse to remove local from the game. It's a feature that has been present since day one and is functioning as it should.

Ok, so I have to sit in my belt hitting scan every 2 seconds. What the heck is that? Doing the exact same thing, but a much lengthier, and stupid, process.
Why don't we just get rid of barges and everyone has to mine with ibis's then, by your logic.
