OmegaTron,
My machine setup is: AMD Athlon 1.33 ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard 512 mb pc 2100 RAM ASUS GeforceFX 5600 256meg 20gb 7200 RPM HD WinXP pro sp1
and it runs Eve perfectly smooth at 1280x1024 resolution with "planet detail" set to high.
Your machine should be plenty fast enough to run Eve however there are many things that can affect performance besides the system specs. A couple of things you might want to check out:
-When you aren't "doing something" with your machine, how much of the system resources are being used? How many programs are running in the background? A good way to check this is right-click on the Start bar and go to "Task Manager." The performance tab will show you some useful info as will the processes tab which you can search for any running processes on the internet to see whether they should be running or not. You can also simply look in the bottom right-hand corner near the clock to see how many other little programs are running. The best advice is to shutdown any programs you don't need and see if that helps. Performance can especially be inhibited if you are running any third-party GUI enhancements like stylexp or objectdock. If you are you might want to try and disable them before starting up Eve and see if that helps.
-When was the last time you defragmented your harddrive? If you can't remember or it has been a long time you might try doing that by going to the Start Menu>All Programs>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter and running a defrag.
-Do you know if you get good bandwidth throughput where you are? Since you said you are on cable you run the risk all cable users do which is poor performance due to shared bandwidth usage. Eve is a pretty optimized game in terms of netcode but if you are having terrible ping times or any packet loss that could cause problems. You might try running some of the tests at dslreports.com which will let you know if your bandwidth is ok. I think you have to create a login to use the packet loss test but it might be worth it. You should run any tests at the same time you would play the game as problems relating to shared bandwidth can often be time sensitive as the problems stem from other users doing specific things with their connection. Also, if you are sharing your bandwidth at your location with other computers through a router or switch you might check to see if those computers are doing any net-intensive things while you are trying to play.
-Are your nvidia drivers up to date? Your windows system? Go to windows update and make sure you have all critical updates and driver updates available. You should also pick up any recommended updates that you think you would want. Then go to the Nvidia Drivers Page and make sure you have the latest drivers. You can check your driver version by seeing what number the nividia page leads you to and then go to your start menu, right click on My computer and go to properties, click hardware tab, click device manager, expand display adapters, right click on your vid card and go to properties, click on driver tab and look at the version number. If it is lower than the one on the nvidia page, time to update it.
-Going back to system performance, one quick way to help things all the way around is to go to the start menu, right click on My Computer, click on the Advanced Tab, click on the Settings button under the Performance section, and select the option for "adjust for best performance" which will get rid of all the frills that are part of XP. Be warned, doing this will make your XP look as ugly as windows 95 but at least it will run fast :-)
Hope some of these things help you mate. I know there are more things that can affect game performance but I can't think of them at the moment. I can tell you that, at least in Eve's case, the video card makes all the difference.
As I said, my athlon 1.3ghz, 512meg DDR ram system with a geforceFX 5600 runs wonderful which is interesting considering my work machine which is a P4 3.06ghz with 512 meg of Rambus ram and a geforce4 mx420 has trouble at 1024x768 in stations. Your card is just a step below mine and is a directX 9 card which is what Eve was built on so you should be sitting pretty and your card has plenty of ram. Good Luck! :-)

Omegatron,
It seems that EVE has problems with some Geforce FX users. My computer is a: Pentium 4 2.2gHz Celeron 768mb Ram Geforce FX 5600 128mb DDR Windows XP Proffesional Creative Live! 5.1 sound
Even though these specs should be up to date, I have the same problems as you, EVE gets a low framerate with alot of ship, or in an asteroid field (even slightly lower than normal while normally playing). I find that hiding the URL via the Ctrl+F9 function makes the game run smoothly, though with the UI visible, the framerate drops again.
It seems other people share this problem, as you can see in this post -> http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=39912. So I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, as some Geforce FX users get a smooth game, while others don't. |

I have update my MB after i read this, but when i opened my case to see what mb i have i noticed alot of dust in the fans and on my cpu cooler after i cleaned off the dust, updated my MB and restarted my computer i noticed a big differance in speed
i don't know if it was updateing my MB or cleaning the dust off? or both? but i do know that a dirty computer can overheat and cause a **** load of probs i think now that my cpu is running at the right temp. is the reason for the speed boost.
it runs just like when i bought it over a year ago. thx for the info
p.s. i have also reinstalled XP. computer runs sweet now ------------------------------------------------ A Plague is comming.... |

Read and weep (of joy)!:
Pent III 1 Ghz 128MB SDRAM 32MB GeForce2 Vidcard 40 GB HDD 7200rpm WIN ME Broadband (1024 kb/s)
Hehe, anyone thnking they have a problem ?
Bow to the king of lag
(upgrading the ram to 512MB would cost me about Eur 100,- and would be the only upgrade i would consider making before buying a new system)

Edited by: Earthan on 27/11/2003 14:21:35 I have:
Athlon XP 2000+, 512 ddr ram, Asus a7N8X deluxe , Windows 2000 sp 4, GF 4 Ti 4200 128 ram AGP x8, ADSL 128/512,Samsung 17" monitor
Obviously i havent got the biggest
And i must say Eve runs smoothly at 1280x1024 with high details.
So i think all those with much higher systems i have seen and have low framerates should check thier config, its weird.
Ah i noticed running in windowed mode slows Eve pretty much, much better in full screen.
Also beware of kazaa and other "free" software intoducing spyware in your system, I think they can slow down the comp pretty much, i use another os on another parttition for all the "risky software".( including Visual 6.0 wich made my Win 2000 go crazy last time )

WHY DONT U BUY A NICE CASE LIKE ANTEC OR TERMALTAKE THEY HAVE LOTS OF FANS TO KEEP THE CASE COOL AND FOR YOUR CPU GET A TERMALTAKE FANS THEY ARE GOOD AND FAST TOO ABOUT 5500RPM BUT THE SUCKERS MAKE LOTS OF NOISE OR IF U REALLY WANT TO HAVE A BETTER CASE JUST GET THE WATER COOLED CASE

Workin' on replacing some parts, I really need more fans and better cooling to make it more silent. I think I'll go for 5 PAPST low-noise for the front/back/side and maybe some watercooling for CPU/GFX.
Yeah, I like computers...

Not many folks realise this but dust is the rich enemy of all electronics. It clogs vents reducing airflow, and attracts to any spinning objects - cd writers and fans a prime targets. Worst of all it coats the circuit board creating low-resistance paths between terminals that should be completely isolated from each other.
Want a quick a and cheap performance boost? - then blow the dust off!

I remember when I had a dual PC. It was a dual P3 550 MHz, with 512 of ram, also based on a Tyan mobo.
I bought it in 1998, and only changed to athlon 2 years ago because the Tyan smoked. But whoever had a dual PC, will never forget. sometimes I have the impression that it was faster than my AXP 2100+. _______________________________________________

Be careful with that dust!!! Sometimes, in old computers, that dust is simply what makes it work!! If you clean it, you will start to have all sort of problems!!
