Just out of interest, what exactly is Thanksgiving? What are you celebrating? We don't have this holiday in Europe (not that i'm aware of!).

It's an excuse to thank god for all the GM food the Americans have developed.
Oh ... and for the cash they get selling the 'special soil' Africans and Asians need to grow the stuff after they bought the seeds.
No we don't celebrate it in Europe.

I once met an american who found it sooo strange we didn't. He really couldn't see why us europeans wouldn't celebrate how "renegade religious fanatics" (by that time's standards) were saved by native americans (only to later be wiped out by the very people they saved)

For those intersted in the actual factual meaning of our American Holiday of Thanksgiving... here it is.
The story of the Pilgrims actually begins in the early part of the Seventeenth Century, when the Church of England under King James I was persecuting anyone who didn't recognize its absolute civil and spiritual authority. The Mayflower Pilgrims, led by William Bradford, established the freest society ever conceived based on the teachings and tolerance of the Bible.
Upon arriving here, they found that things were a bit tough. During the first winter, half the Pilgrims, including William Bradford's wife, died. When spring finally came, Indians taught the settlers how to plant corn, fish for cod and skin beavers for coats. Life improved for the Pilgrims but they didn't yet prosper û because the contract required that everything they produced be put into a communal pile! Upon discovering that this communalism didn't work, the Pilgrims shifted to a free market farming system.
It was only then that they had enough food to share with the Indians! Bradford wrote of the promise that "taking away property and bringing community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing," but found instead that this socialism "was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort."
The Pilgrims thanked God for their plenty and blessings. By turning away from socialism and adopting the concepts of capitalism with the ownership of private property, the Pilgrims were able to share what they produced with the Indians who had helped them.
And that is the foundation of our Capitalistic Society....
For which I Thank God.
So I guess they were against Pirates...

Thanksgiving was started by the ôPilgrimsö who were the first Europeans to settle America. These Pilgrims left Europe because they wanted religious freedom. They came to America on 3 small ships and were at sea for quite a while. They landed and found a wonderful place (IÆm sure any place looked good after being on a ship for 4 months). Being deeply religious they decided to have a celebration in honor of their God and to give thanks for the bounty of the new lands. They invited the American Indians they found here.
Now it is the biggest family holiday we have. The day before Thanksgiving is the single most traveled day in America. Everyone is with family or friends for Thanksgiving diner. In fact if you are alone on Thanksgiving in America it is very rare. And what a feast it is! Turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberries, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, etc, etc, etcà
Like Christmas it is day where we are nicer to each other than we normally would be. ItÆs a good holiday. In fact I picked my mom up from the airport yesterday. My daughter is having a blast helping with making everything. She helped stuff the turkey and is helping now with the pumpkin pie. Life is goodà Happy Thanksgiving.

That's a nonsensical statement; there is at least one logical step missing from the argument. Did anybody ever find out what it is?

Key word here being 'retard', emigrating to a foreign land without proper training on how to survive and trusting it all in an outside force just goes to show, sometimes evolution screw up.

Hmmm, I don't think the 'Outdoor Survival Handbook' was readily available to people 400 years ago.

It seems strange though that we celebrate things that lead to or could have lead to murder, death and general unpleasantness .
Having said that, maybe blowing up parliment isn't such a bad idea .
